Step by Step : My Pixel BasicsStep by Step : My Pixel Basics2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I've had people from time to time ask me how I pixel, and I've never really been sure how to explain. It hasn't been until the past few years that i've really thought too much about what I was doing beyond experimenting and learning new things. I think I've rounded out some basic guidelines I usually follow and a friend wanted some advice so I decided to attempt some sort of explanation
Below are some step by step images and commentary. Please note that there is no one right way to create a piece of art. This Step by Step is meant only to impart some understanding of how I do things . In Pixel art alone there are many many 'styles'. I encourage anyone reading to look up more than one tutorial and seek critique if trying to learn their own pixel style.
Please excuse any spelling mistakes, and take note that I use Photoshop 7.0, but the same principals sh
Decoration/ Customization TutorialJournal SkinsDecoration/ Customization Tutorial2 years ago in Personal More Like This
When you make a new Journal, look to your right. Over there is where you select what Journal Skins from your installed collection you will use. The default is Deviant Green. Right by there is another square with what appears to be an eye that is labeled "Browse Skins." Click that, and you can look through DevaintART's Journal Skins category for ones you might like and can install to use later to ensure that these are for Free use--anyone can use it--, and not Private use-- only a particular person can use--). HOWEVER, you can only use a Journal Skin besides the default if you are a paid Premium Member, Senior Member, or if a company has sponsored free Journal Skins (which happens about once or twice a year) for a short time. You can also make or customize your own Journal Skin using CSS (specific coding), but since most people do not know how, I asked firstfear to make some templates in 2012.

'Ello there! If you've been on any social media site, you most likely in one form or another have used an emoticon. An emoticon is an icon that expresses emotion. Such as
Emotes are an easy way to express yourself and I'm going to teach you how to shade some.
Almost all emotes are sized to be 15x15 (unless you are making a larger one; tutorial by IceXDragon described here). You can use lots of programs to make them. I use MS Paint to make my emotes because I believe it's the easiest to control but you can use whatever you like.
An emote's outline will look like this (You can use it if you want. ) :
Here's what it looks like at a bigger scale.
Emotes should look circular like the one above. I would recommend this size for all emotes at a standard size level. At this stage, I like to mess with the emote to see what k
Did You Know - BlockingBlockingDid You Know - Blocking9 months ago in Art Features More Like This
While many people tend to report other deviants they don't get along with or they feel harassed by to the HelpDesk right away, your first action should always be blocking.
Whatever reason you have to report someone, by blocking you avoid any further communication with certain deviants.
This action is immediate, as you don't have to wait for any staff member to take action and you can just enjoy your dA experience without that blocked deviant.
Personal reasons like disagreeing on a topic, not liking someone or similar won't end with a ban of that other deviant.
Contacting the HelpDesk just adds to the queue of tickets unnecessarily and makes it more time consuming to focus on important reports.
Only in case of serious harassment you should contact the HelpDesk.
If you are blocking someone it's an action in both directions. That means that not only the other person gets blocked from you, but you are automatically blocked for them as well.
How to Report PeopleI've been notified about some art thief posting pictures from Google on to their gallery. There were comments complaining about this on their profile. Either nobody knows how to report them or the DA committee won't take action. How to Report People4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just in case if you encounter something such as this, here's how you can report them:
1. Go to "Help and FAQ" from the DA drop-down menu that's beside the logo
2. Click "Contact the Help Desk". It's on the left side in bold.
3. So know it would tell you to send a note to them. For the category, click "Abuse Report" under "Copyright and Etiquette". What they mean by abuse report means is reporting on abusive and unacceptable behavior that goes AGAINST their policies. For example, stolen art.
4. Now write the report.*
*Don't forget to put a subject on it. They may not take it as seriously.

This article has four main topics:
- Works in dA for All Members
- Doesn't work in dA for Premium Members
- Works in dA for Alpha Testers at devBUG
What is a Transition?
This time, I'll explain with an example. Let's take this awesome emote by jahw.
When I see that emote, I'm imagining it saying "CHAAAARGE!" and running forward! So I want to make the emote do that, but instead of opening it up in Photoshop to animate (which I'm not allowed to do anyway since it's not my work), I'm just going to add a simple code that will do the animation for me! Hover over the emote below to see this magic in action!

Did You Know - Sta.shSta.shDid You Know - Sta.sh8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Sta.sh is your very own upload and publishing platform within deviantART.
Everything that you add will be provided a special URL, that is only known to you. That means that others are only able to see the content you are willing to share with them. It can be a specific file or a whole stack of different ones.
With a free membership you will have a limit of 2 GB, while Premium Members can store files up to 10 GB. Once you have reached the limit you can't upload more. You first need to delete or to publish existing files.
How to get to Sta.sh
To enter Sta.sh you can either just type that into your browser or make use of the dA menu.
You will find it in the menu, under the "Deviant" section, when hovering over the little arrow next to the dA logo but also when you use the "Submit" menu.
By clicking one of those, or typing it directly, you
Massive, huge, giant animation resource journalHello everyone!Massive, huge, giant animation resource journal2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I've decided to keep a few of the journals I have written for this week and I'll be posting them as news instead, as they are more opinion centric by studying the methods of story telling.
However for my last journal I want to share with you some delicious resources, beware this journal should get pretty huge!!
I have split them into two...deviantART and Outside Links. As you know I cannot control what is on third party websites so enjoy at your own risk, but you can trust that I wouldn't post anything untoward.
That said, please enjoy and use these resources to your heart's content!
My own collection of artistic nudes for reference.

Common Digital Painting Mistakes FAQHi everyone! I'm so happy so many of you enjoyed my tutorial!Common Digital Painting Mistakes FAQ3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Thank you for all your +favs and comments -- it's been awesome . A lot people have been asking similar questions which weren't answered in the original tutorial. Here's some FAQ that will hopefully clear things up:
1. How do you do this in Paint Tool SAI?
Unfortunately, I don't have Paint Tool SAI so I don't have an exact answer for this. However, I've heard that it's similar so you should be able to translate most of the Photoshop tips into SAI. Also, most of the tips are conceptual and function in traditional work as well as digital, so the program you are using shouldn't hinder you too much in applying them.
2. What size should I make my canvas?
This has been a really common question and the answer is that it depends on the complexity of the work and the amount of detail you are trying to achieve. I make my canvases in the thousands of pixels at least. A rule of thumb that I use is
Draw My Oc's Contest! [CLOSED] The contest has been closed due to a lack of entries. I said I had the right to close it if I didn't get at least one entry in a 2 week time span, and I didn't. (rule 8.) Thank you all for at least trying to participate! I may try this again eventually, and I will include all of the old entries again. probably when I hit 200 watchers.Draw My Oc's Contest! [CLOSED]4 months ago in Personal More Like This
After promising this to you guys, it's finally coming!
I have a crap ton of Oc's, who I update daily!! Currently, I only happen to have my fan trolls up, but this will change as soon as I have references for everyone!!
The contest must get at least 15 entries before 1/15/15 (my birthday, which is also the deadline) for me to give out the prizes.
Here they all are: http://sta.sh/21qe9ihol30a?edit=1
I do have a few rules though:
1. Please no major gore with any of my human oc's . My trolls and my Ghouls are okay.
2. No previous art (submitted before 10/26/14) that I've commissioned from you or requ
THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARSYou know that green ellipse tool that you bought in art school? Do you know how to use it for something other than oval shapes? Do you know what those "cross-hair" marks are for? And do you know how to use it for technically correct perspective drawings?THREE TIPS FOR DRAWING CARS2 years ago in Personal More Like This
TOO many comics artists don't, and it's driving me crazy. So instead of starting a blog that starts showing examples and naming names, I figured it was better to make a quick tutorial. And this isn't just for cars but also for guns, fire hydrants, and millions of other machined objects found in comics.
If you go through this and you're still stuck, please don't write to me. I'm happy to show you at a convention to make it clearer, but within a blog this is the best I can do. Check out "Perspective for Comic Artists by David Chelsea" for more.
Cars are a whole lot easier to draw if you know how to properly use perspective and ellipses. The more familiar you are with the math, the more fun it is to draw cars. Once I figured out th
