Cain : We sometimes got comments saying that the characters or the comic are inspired by something else than the Bible.
Abel : That's why we wish to clarify things a bit, so you can all know the story of this comic and how everything begun. Some of you already heard it a while ago during a Livestream.
Cain : It all started on 12th of April 2012 as the folder of the first sketch is dated. Below is the sketch we are talking about for now.
Abel : It started with the demon from the right side of the artwork. :iconblacksmiley: showed it to a friend, to whom we're still very thankful, and asked him for a name for this random character she created. He suggested Abel, so Abel it was. Knowing the story of Cain and Abel from the Bible, she created Cain, the one from the left side of the artwork. And so it begun.
Cain : She sketched a story of these two little guys, and

The sudden realizationMy boyfriend and I watched a documentation about Indie gaming yesterday. Not that I'm so much into gaming, but I do enjoy an occasional documentary. And if there's one thing that I have in common with those Indie game makers is that we're both artists and we're both working on an own project, although that project is very different in nature. The movie followed a few of those indie game makers through the making and publishing of their projects. The sudden realization1 month ago in Personal More Like This
One of the people that were followed, was Phil Fish, the developer of a game called Fez.
While his game seemed to be pretty good looking (I'm not a gamer, so I've never played it), the drama around the making and the release of the game was what I remembered most. Threatening to kill a fellow co-worker and that kind of stuff. At the end of the movie, both I and m

AmbitionMy profile page states that I'm not a professional artist.Ambition1 week ago in Personal More Like This
I put it up there, nice and bold, so there would never be a mistake about that.
Yet, seeing the messages I receive, I think many people get me wrong on that one.
I don't state this whole not-being-a-professional-thing because I think my art sucks and I somehow desperately want people to reinforce me. No, I state this because I'm not a professional in the sense that art isn't my job. I'm not doing art for money, and that's the simple reason why. I never took art commissions and I've never even really tried to do so. Because I do art for the enjoyment alone.
Nice statement, you'd say. But you know what the strange thing is? People try to guilt talk me a lot.
Tell me that I'm low on ambition, that I would be able to make it if I really wanted, or even that I'm wasting my talent by just making art for my own enjoyment. Because "If you're good at something, you shou
ImprovementOver the years, many people have asked me for how long I've been drawing. While it's true that I started drawing as soon as I was able to hold a pencil, I was never that serious about it. In a sense, you can ask yourself if I was any serious on art altogether. Because, in the end, all kids draw. I think most people can remember making drawings in grade school. Because it's something kids do naturally. Depicting the world around them with images. The beautiful thing is that kids have no fear. They just draw whatever they like, and are usually happy with it. It isn't until the age of 10 or 12, that the outside world suddenly expects you to be either good at something, or stop doing it. It's at that age that we become self cautious about drawing. And therefore it's around that age many kids eventually stop drawing.Improvement3 weeks ago in Deviant Events More Like This

And even now I'm seriously considering disabling comments for the things that I make. Because I'm so fed up with the continuous hate. And I'm so goddamn sick and tired of people that send me messages that I should just die, just because I happen to make a tutorial. (Yes, this message was literally send to me -- by PM ofcourse)
In the past weekend I hadn't so much to do. I wasn't that inspired to make art, so I decided to work on that tutorial that for which the idea had been floating inside my head for a while already.
Like some of you know, I've been giving drawing workshops every now and then for the past 2 years. Nothing too serious. I don't even get paid for it (aside from an occasional artbook or fanart drawing). I was there because of passion. Beca

Frozen Discussion/Debate: Parent's decisionHi, everyone!Frozen Discussion/Debate: Parent's decision1 month ago in Personal More Like This
I hope you're all having a fantastic month! I've watched the movie Frozen, and fell in love with the movie. It was such a beautiful movie, and it had meaningful messages.
However, I'm going to bring up the controversy/debate about Disney's representation of parents.
I couldn't help, but compare this movie's similarities with Tangled and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame.
Like Quasimodo, Elsa's parents had hidden her from the public eye, because of her power's. Quasimodo was 'concealed' because of his appearance. They were both taught to not 'feel' the need to accept themselves, and to go outside. They were both lead, in way, to feel like a monster. Like Rapunzel, who had a magical power (in her hair), they were both concealed from the public. They had different reasons...for doing so. Frollo, was cold-hearted, and refused to give Quasimodo any freedom or love. Frollo was darker, though. The same thing goes for Mother Goth
IMPORTANT-GIVING AWAY ALL ADOPTED CHARACTERS-READThis is concerning any of the characters that I have that I have adopted.IMPORTANT-GIVING AWAY ALL ADOPTED CHARACTERS-READ1 week ago in Personal More Like This
I've come down to the conclusion that any characters I have adopted I will be getting rid of.
ALL of them.
I will be giving these characters away for free or giving them back to the original owner for resell.
Now why am I doing this?Because I was digging through people's galleries and journals, of the people who adopt my characters, and its sad seeing your own design being used only as a character reff and collected almost like a prize or a trophy in someone's gallery. And then that trophy sits there and collects dust and nothing happens with that character.
Or even if they USE the design in the first place. If they even DRAW it out themselves. Or commission someone to draw it out.
And it's funny thinking this way when you yourself do the same thing with other people's adoptables. In other words, I do not want to be a hypocrite and do the same to other people's adoptables. Because is disrespectful an
Why equipment doesn't matter all that muchOh god, I wanted that Wacom Intuos tablet so badly. Why equipment doesn't matter all that much2 weeks ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I was 16 years old at that time. I had already seen so much amazing art on the internet for the last few years. Digital art, to be precise. And I wanted to be able to do that as well. I had a computer, I had installed Photoshop. The only thing that I didn't have was money. I was completely broke. Note: it's 2004 we're talking about, here. 10 years ago (yeah, I'm old) when computers still costed a fortune and one almost had to take an extra mortgage in order to be able to pay a tablet. Back then, the average Intuos tablet costed as much as the average computer; a whole damn lot of money.
I had already been drawing for years, back then.
I occasionally scanned my drawings. But as my scanner was utter crap (all scanners where, back then), my preferred medium was pencil (that never does well with scanners) and I wasn't that good with adjusting colors in Photoshop... most of my drawings ended in utter digital disappointment.

How should I price my art?Hi,How should I price my art?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you spend a lot of time in the DA forums, you will see this topic spring up again and again. Whether you want to earn a living doing freelance art, or you just want to do an occasional commission, these guidelines may help you:
Why is it so difficult to choose a price? Why can't someone look at my art and tell me what to charge? Because it is not just about price and skill level! If three people have the exact same skill level, one might be able to sell their art for $10, another might be able to sell their art for $100 and the third might not be able to sell it at all depending on how good they are at "marketing" (looking for clients and interacting with them.) An artist's ability to seek out clients, choose the right clients, offer a type of work that will sell, communicate effectively, and provide value that their competitors cannot match... is difficult to gauge by looking at a few art samples.
The starting price you pick right now doesn't have to be the perfec
Improving image composition!Sometimes the details of our illustration look sooo good! but then when we step back and look at the composition... it's a little boring or muddy or crowded or our eyes wander away from the parts that looked so good up close... Where are our focal points? Why doesn't this illustration grab my attention and hold it? Composition can make or break a piece. Here are some links that show examples of good and bad compositions and describe why certain layouts are more successful than others. Various tips and rules are described and illustrated. Am I ready to start freelancing?Hi,Am I ready to start freelancing?1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
I think that anyone with at least "good" artistic skill and and a willingness to work hard can find enough art job opportunities to stay busy and bring in some money. (However, there is a lot of competition, here on DA, AND out in the real world, so you have to be ready to put some effort into it.) This particular discussion deals with commissions (finding clients who need art and providing that art... as opposed to creating a body of work and then trying to sell it.)
I earn my living as a freelance artist. Finding freelance work involves hours of work producing art, but also hours of work finding new jobs and corresponding with clients each week. It requires confidence, patience, organization, motivation, and perseverance. Some clients have a very clear vision for their project and can describe it well. Others are a bit disorganized or unmotivated requiring extra effort on my part (and some clients should just be avoided completely). Even if you are just doing about 1 commission p

School or self-teaching?What is the best way to move toward being the most talented, marketable artist you can possibly be? To school or not to school... that is the question.School or self-teaching?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
There are many many variables to consider. Schools vary broadly in terms of courses offered, quality of education, teaching staff, class size, and cost. Students vary widely in terms of motivation, study habits, interest in their courses, and income level. School can be an easier learning environment than self-teaching if you have a great teacher who is teaching what you want or need to learn. A teacher sets goals and holds you accountable. This arrangement can help maximize the learning experience by providing structure and accountability for the student. However, a student with sufficient motivation and enthusiasm (and internet access) can self-teach very well. One benefit of self-teaching is that you can pick your topics. You can identify your own weak points, or desired skill sets and focus on improving them.
