CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK*EDIT* Woohoo!! We have some entries!!CONTEST EXTENDED A WEEK1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Hello everyone!! It's been a while since I last held a stock challenge for stock artists but in the spirit of the new year here you go.
What if a mirror isn't all it seems. What if your reflection wants to keep you on your side? What if you are able to climb through a mirror but your reflection keeps standing in front of you, blocking your way? You try to touch the mirror without your reflection touching the same place. Maybe the cold surface isn't the mirror you're touching, but the cold flesh of your doppelganger, pushing back, keeping you on your side.
The theme is 'Through the Mirror'

DYNAMIC AND ACTIVE POSING FOR STOCKStock & ResourcesDYNAMIC AND ACTIVE POSING FOR STOCK3 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Broadly defined, Action Stock is any photo-reference in which the subject is doing SOMETHING. That 'something' does not need to be extreme or particularly kinetic, it just has to show the effects of various forces on the bodies (or other objects) in the image. Perusing an artifact, sitting on someone's knee, even enjoying the aroma of a cup of coffee are great examples of actions that, when explored as stock images, can be of great value to artists.
Of course, there is nothing wrong with extreme, kinetic, over-the-top actions, either...
~ ~ ~
It's worth stating the obvious: if you are interested in exploring the more "kinetic" end of the action spectrum, know your limits. Don't work beyond your skill level and observe all necessary safety precautions; no shot is worth getting hurt over.

My DeviantArt StoryFor 10 years DeviantArt has been more than a gallery, more than a home page, more than a place to share art. Lineart, Light, and Planning AheadJust a quickie today because I saw something that made me smile!Lineart, Light, and Planning Ahead3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I love it when artists post the lineart and then the finished piece. In the case of this drawing, the lines are charming and well-executed, but don't particularly give the impression of a finished piece. They are clearly one part of a considered process.
A lot of the time, lines are used as a description of exclusively form and the things that can be conveyed that way, composition, expression, etc. Then, when we color, we begin to consider things like mood and lighting. I've been thinking a lot about how to describe light with line while working on the recent ink drawings, and so I had a particular "squee" moment when I noticed this lovely spot of consideration in Hughes' drawing-
Look at the color version at the shadow behind Selina- the shape of it, and compare it to the line version. Despite there being very little detai

So, you want to make an awesome tutorial for your friends, and anybody else who might be interested in your style/techniques/skills/programming/designing ...
There are some essentials you are going to want to keep in mind when you make your tutorial.
Its not just a bunch of text and some pictures (OK it is, but theres more you could do! )
Its not just a few quick tips or pointers for a friend who asked you for some more details (OK it is, but its more than that! )
Its not just some work in progress screenshots/photos of your next big project (OK it is, but its SO MUCH more than that!!)
Don't forget, great design IS ART!
DeviantART is predominantly an English language website. However, DeviantART is a global community, so not everyone can read English fluently. Make sure your use of language i
Did You Know - Thumbs CodeThumbs CodeDid You Know - Thumbs Code9 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Whenever you do a feature or maybe want to link to a certain deviation the thumbs code is a very handy feature. It allows your viewers to see a smaller version of what you are referring to directly.
But did you know that there are several ways to make thumbs appear?
The most common way is to grab the thumbs code from the sidebar of a deviation.
That way you will get a little preview no bigger than 150x150px.
Another thing you can do is to create a big thumb. For that you just need to add 'big' to the thumbcode, like :bigthumb###:
For our example it will look like this.
Big thumbs will get no bigger than 300x300px.
Alongside those and thanks to AddMedia and Sta.sh you also vary the size on your own.
Either choose deviations from the AddMedia sidebar and make use of the transformation corners or use this code
Why are we slower?About a month ago I finally got to meet an art hero of mine, Klaus Janson, a well known pro who's been in the industry for over 30 years. A mutual friend introduced us, and we hit it off right away. The group of us went through the Village hitting pub after pub, and soon I was drunk enough to ask Klaus something that had been bugging me.Why are we slower?3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I asked him if modern comic artists are, on average, slower than we used to be. He said yes, and I agreed.
From the Golden Age until the 80s, pencillers were generally expected to turn in at least two pages a day, while an inker was expected to turn in around 3-4. There were a handful of exceptions, I'm sure, but most of the artists could pump out pages like human printing presses. In the current comic industry, it's completely reversed: while a handful of artists can still hit this speed, the vast majority can't. Pencillers today struggle to produce a page-per-day, while inkers (those who still ink with ink) are hitting around 2.
So what happened? I'v
To the trolls...Dear Trolls,To the trolls...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Welcome back to my page after being inactive for so long. I was beginning to wonder now that I think about it if you had forgotten me. 'Cause I kinda forgot about you. Sorry.
Look, and I'm sorry to have to tell you this, I actually don't come on deviantart just because of you... as you do for me obviously. I know, I know... if only I would write back to your comments and take the flirtatious bait. I guess I'm just not that into you.
I come here to supply an art resource to hobby and serious artists. Unfortunately, your gallery of pathetic attempts of "art" (and I use the word loosely) - or none at all - really doesn't classify you as that group of people.
I understand. I really do. You feel such an emptiness in your life that you feel the need to comment on a strangers photos things like:
You're such a fat cow.
I love your toes.
You're ugly as sin.
Can you hog-tie yourself in a maids outfit and put an apple in your mouth?

Here's a sample of responses I've heard from some editors over the years when I've raised practical business concerns regarding comic book publishing:
"No, we don't know exactly what books you'll be doing, but we're (insert name of big publisher) Comics, so sign exclusive with us and not (insert name of competing publisher who has titles ready for you)!"
"This is a (insert name of big writer) book! I know he's late, but just think of how many people would love to be in your shoes!"
"The page rate isn't good, but at least you'll be getting to work with (name of big superhero whom you're supposed to be a fan of)!"
"We won't fly you out or put you into a hotel, but you should come so you can sign at the booth for us! Who doesn't love signing autographs?"
What do these statements have in common? They're emotional arguments made to sidestep yo

Comic Composition GeekoutSPECIAL GUEST STAR (against his knowledge) IS :iconandrew-ross-maclean:Comic Composition Geekout2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You guys know when I get really excited about art geekery, I JUST CAN'T KEEP IT IN. I also feel like composition is a really hard thing to learn, and all you can really do is try to learn "what is good" in composition, and then try to find examples until you can recognize it. In addition, composition for comics is extra hard because you have to worry about the overall flow of the page as well as the composition of each individual panel.
So I was doing my spring cleaning of my message center and came on some new comic pages he uploaded, all of which are awesome, but take a particular look at this one:
This page is AMAZING. I started watching this guy for his slick style and stayed for his crazy composition skills, and this page makes a particularly good example because his work is so clean and straight-forward, there's not a lot of noodling to distract from the motion lines.

A lot of artists starting out feel overwhelmed by the legal, business, and tax issues involved in starting a small business and becoming a freelance artists. Fortunately, there are organizations around the country to help those who exist under a certain income bracket.
Here is a list of organizations by state.
Each offers different services and consultations, but if you're stuck for information, these people are here to help. Even if they don't know the answer to your question, they might be able to direct you to someone who does.
Though some of the organizations are disbanded, I imagine you could ask for an updated list.
