I received many emails asking about the brushes I use.
Here is the set I give to my students. Feel free to use it as well. It is a mix of personal brushes and other artists's set, free of use.

I suggest that you ADJUST THE SIZE OF THE WINDOW accorded to the picture, to take full advantage of the set. The brush repeating itself is here on PURPOSE, to help classify the all thing.

This set was created on Photoshop-CC and works with Cs6 and Cs5 as well.

I hope this helps !
Just don't forget that brushes won't do the job for you.

For digital Charcoal
From traditional charcoal !

Little set of personal custom brushes.
This set was made on Photoshop CC and is NOT compatible with Cs5.

I was trying to create a few brushes to emulate a nice "charcoal" render, and got the idea to use my own charcoals on paper. The result works quite well, I hope you enjoy !

A collection of all the brushes I find myself dabbling with when doing environment artwork. Typically a select few are used much more than the others but they all certainly have their uses. The image in the background is made entirely using the brushes found in this set, with every brush being used at least once. I normally don't use them so extensively or so exclusively when painting and I certainly don't encourage it, but in the very least it shows what they can achieve. Please remember folks that good art is not all about the brushes you use. They are as much a tool as photoshop itself and should be viewed as such when you're still learning.

Some of the brushes have been made by myself and the rest have been tweaked from others that are freely available on the internet.

They should all work in Photoshop CS3 and above but I cannot vouch for older versions, sorry :(

Hopefully some of you will find them as useful as I have over the years :D

NOTE: These brushes are free to use and may be used to produce commercial work, but please DO NOT redistribute the brush set itself for profit. They have always been and always should be free for everyone. If you should ever see a website selling this set for money please kindly re-direct people here.

I've been getting requests from people all around to share the brushes I use for my illustrations! Here are the brushes I use for basically -everything- when I paint. Some of them I've created myself, and others I've gathered from other sets through the years.

Hope they will be useful for you guys! Enjoy. :)

PS. These are all for Photoshop!

PHOTOSHOP ONLY (sorry brah's).

Edit: I've done a live demo on how I use this smudge set and how the smudge tool behaves, the video will be put up in a couple of days on my new YouTube channel here: www.youtube.com/johnsilvaart , keep your eyes peeled!

By popular demand, you guys wanted more, so here's more 27 smudge brushes.
I created these brushes from scratch (Apart from 3 of them, sorry for not saying who, I just don't remember) due to the fact that I want to take my work have a more painterly feel..
Most of you know that I use smudge tool 90% of the time in my paintings, so this only made sense.

If you share these around, please make sure to put my DA link along with it, these took a lot of time to make and refine.

(I will make a youtube video on how I personally use them in my professional work, I'll edit this section out with a link to it when I'm done.)

Have fun!

Quick Tip's on how to use it:
- Put the smudge tool strength on 100%
- Apart from the top 3 brushes, for the most part if you want a nice texture, try to only tap with you tablet pen when using a smudge brush, the random setting will create a better mark of the texture.
- It works best in contrasty areas of your painting

How to load it:
- Right click on a canvas.
- Click on the cog wheel icon (or arrow depending on the PS ver.) .
- Select load brushes.
- Pick John Silva Smudge Pack Painter Edition.abr file.
- ???.
- Painterly profit!

This is a set of brushes created for Adobe.
They asked me to create a set of basic brushes that could be used as a starter for digital painting.

Created and works under Photoshop-CC.
Make sure you adjust the window size of the brush selector, so you can take advantage of the "categories" system.

I hope you guys enjoy it !

I don't use a lot of crazy brushes but along with the standard soft round, hard round, and chalk brushes this is a workhorse of mine when working in Photoshop. Simply add the .abr file to the Presets>Brushes directory in your Adobe Photoshop application folder. I hope you can get some use out of it!

Please visit this video to learn the setup: youtu.be/iipUPpCFGYg

These brushes are for Photoshop, and the above video will explain the setup and format of the brushes, which need to display as large thumbnails, with 9 brushes per row.

They are a combination of brushes I've made myself and those culled from friends, colleagues, and other great artists. A lot of them might have bizarre names, but they're all categorized so it shouldn't be a problem.

Enjoy, and I hope it helps!
