How well do you understand copyright and trademark law? When you travel about the Internet or make art, do you know what you are and aren't allowed to do, or do you have intellectual property myths stuck in your brain. We take a few claims we've seen time and again, and compare them to the law.
A couple of notes before we get started: 1) You shouldn't take any of this as legal advice. In fact, you shouldn't be taking your legal advice from posts on the Intern
Leonard Nimoy dies at 83Leonard Nimoy, the sonorous, gaunt-faced actor who won a worshipful global following as Mr. Spock, the resolutely logical human-alien first officer of the Starship Enterprise in the television and movie juggernaut “Star Trek,” died on Friday morning at his home in the Bel Air section of Los Angeles. He was 83.Leonard Nimoy dies at 832 months ago in Personal More Like This

While it was not entirely unexpected, it certainly was a shock. Another great loss for "pop-culture", and another one of the great actors to leave the face of this Earth. He is leaving a great legacy behind, and the fact that Mr. Spock was known even to those who are not familiar or interested in the Star Trek franchise, says it all. I will certainly miss him.
My heartfelt condolences to his family, and I'm sure this will also not be the greatest of days for William Shatner and other friends

The Derpy Issue Part 3Seems like I need to clarify a couple things for people. If you don't know what the hullabaloo is all about, please read through the next couple paragraphs. If you're already caught up to the situation please skip to the second half. The Derpy Issue Part 33 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the first season of Friendship is Magic, an animation mistake rendered a background pony with "derpy" eyes. The producers thought it was cute and left it in, occasionally sticking the pony in various scenes. While many people liked calling her Ditzy Doo (based on a remark made in Winter Round Up), the general internet population started calling her Derpy Hooves. Derpy became such a huge phenomenon online that the producers decided to include her in more episodes for Season 2. In Season 2 she started appearing more up close and doing strange things in the backgrounds, making for a fun game of "where's waldo" for the fans. The capper to all this was when Derpy got a speaking role in an episode and was referred to AS Derpy by Rainbow
3D Printing Basics for BeginnersPolyMune here! Bringing you a mini guide to getting your figures printed This is NOT an exact how too guide, nor does it go into great detail on any of the steps. Please regard it as just a quick reference or a very basic understanding of processes. Any issues or concerns please note me and i'll do my best to solve it!3D Printing Basics for Beginners1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
What is 3D printing?
With the advancement of technology comes printers able to print 3D models from your computer into physical 3D forms. 3D printing has been around since the 80's but back then they were mostly industrial printers and WAY too expensive
Nowadays 3D printers are becoming more common and above all else "less expensive" to buy or for companies to rent out their services. This means even the average artist or person can get something 3D printed and not break their wallet
So how do you go about this process? Well! I'm hear to explain it too you as best as I can
Step one: Find a 3D artist
A Beginner's Guide to Offering Commissions OnlineI decided to write this journal because in the last month alone, I had about five young artists ask me this question in one form or another: "How should I go about offering commissions?"A Beginner's Guide to Offering Commissions Online10 months ago in Personal More Like This
This seemingly easy question can actually be quite difficult to answer. The first time I was asked this question, I expected to write only a paragraph response. I was shocked to find that once I had finished writing my response, I had been writing for almost a half hour and had written five paragraphs. Why is this not a simple question? I think the answer lies in the fact that how to offer commissions is not altogether intuitive. I know that when I began to offer commissions, I was at a complete loss. It took me a few years before I got into the swing of things. Even now I make mistakes. So, without further ado I present a beginner's guide, built on my many mistakes, many accomplishments, and 5 years of experience!
One of the first things I recommend

"Advertise your art"
Just because you have the ability to create a group; it doesn't mean you NEED to!
What is the point in creating a group that has no specific purpose when you're already on DevArt?!
"Oh, I'll create a group that will show any kind of photo"
Why create such a group when you can just hit "photography" on the DevArt front page?
"I'll create a group that'll display the work of anyone that wants to draw attention to their art"
Why create a group for that when it's already DevArt's PRIMARY PURPOSE?!
F**kin' morons ..
..hmmm .perhaps I didn't get enough sleep last night after all .

deviantART's response regarding Art4Love.comIt recently came to our attention that a website called Art4Love.com was offering prints for sale, some based off of deviations also found on deviantART.com (and perhaps other works by artists not on deviantART). Art4Love.com is currently offline, but was up long enough to make some artists very understandably upset, as neither the artists (we are told) nor deviantART ever gave permission for Art4Love.com to sell these prints.deviantART's response regarding Art4Love.com4 years ago in Personal More Like This
We've been tracking the exchanges of comments and journals about all possible infringing activity and are ready to provide information from our side that would help legal action that any of the affected artists decide to bring. We will also fully cooperate with any government agency that may become involved because of consumer complaints against this apparently infringing website and the people running it. We would also happily cooperate with any possible fraud investigations.
As a note of caution, we don’t have all the fa
Controversial OpinionsYou know, sometimes having opinions can make you feel like no one else shares your views, especially if your views aren't being widely vocalized around you. Case in point: It's just been announced that J.J.Abrams will be directing Star Wars 7, and the internet is raging with butthurt about how shitty Abrams is, making over abundant lens flare jokes, and bemoaning the reboot of Star Trek in the process.Controversial Opinions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Thing is... I like J.J.Abrams. I liked LOST (despite it's shitty/rushed ending). I liked Super 8. I liked Cloverfield. I even enjoyed the recent Star Trek reboot and am looking forward to the sequel. I never had a problem with lens flares or noticed them being over used. And I think overall Abrams has made a fairly consistent batch of quality movies, which is a amazing considering how many directors flip flop between great and shitty.
But I can't often come right out and say that sort of thing because when I do I get attacked for having an opinion that runs counter to the vast majority o

Filed under 'M'....for 'Misplaced'As a kid, I always idolised those crazy characters in movies that worked in a chaotic environment, filled with papers and books. You know the ones? They were always looking for a specific item amid their hoard of stuff, and they'd tear the place apart in search of it.Filed under 'M'....for 'Misplaced'2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I just realised: I've become one of those characters.....and that sh*t's not nearly as much fun as it looked on screen when I was 8.
WHERE THE F**K DID I PUT THAT FILE??!!

Ever since "Lorcraft" cropped up in Sequential Art, I've been working on an RPG system for an actual, pen-and-paper Lorcraft game and have a few really good ideas that should (in theory) work.
It's a ways off yet, though. It's the kind of thing that'll need some serious playtesting, and I have a zillion other projects to conclude first (LITTLEVICTORYLITTLEVICTORYLITTLEVICTORY!)

Mass Effect TV series revealedBioware loves Mass Effect, they love it dearly. And by proxy, they love its fans.Mass Effect TV series revealed3 years ago in Personal More Like This
After that whole Mass Effect 3 "ending" stuff and stuff, Casey Hudson said "We really dug deep into what Mass Effect truly means to us, as fans and developers. After several long and intense creative meetings with the staff, we realized that what the fans really wanted from the future of the franchise --whether they knew it or not-- was not anything to do with the endings, but rather that they really wanted a cartoon series done in the style of an 80s throwback."
EA provided the funds and the means for this series to be put on the fast track, they even have a trailer for us already!
It will bring tears to your eyes.
