The Wind Rises Contest

Fri Feb 21, 2014, 10:34 AM
18+ U.S. & Canada

Celebrate the art of Hayao Miyazaki and the North American theatrical release of his last film, "The Wind Rises" by creating a very special Tribute to the film's art. Your Tribute will be used to promote the release of "The Wind Rises" on deviantART.

We ask that you combine elements from the images provided in the Asset Pack with your own inspiration to build your Tribute artwork.

"The Wind Rises" tells the story of one of Japan's most important aviation engineers against the backdrop of the major events of the 20th century. Critics have been overwhelmed by the artistry in this final masterwork from the brilliant animator and storyteller, Hayao Miyazaki. This is your opportunity to enter into his world and recast its elements into a final Tribute.

The three winning entries will be used on deviantART to promote the film's release. Each winning artwork will be made into a framed presentation print sent to Studio Ghibli in Japan.

He worked under the director Isao Takahata for scene planning and key animation for the production of "The Little Norse Prince Valiant" (1968). He then moved to the animation studio A Production with Takahata in 1971 where he worked on the original concept, screenplay, layout design and key animation for "Panda! Go Panda!" (1972). In 1984, Miyazaki wrote and directed his feature "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind," based on his original graphic novel which had been serialized in the monthly animation magazine "Animage."

Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Takahata, and has directed eight feature films since. His film "Spirited Away" (2001) broke every box-office record in Japan, and garnered many awards, including the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Oscar® for Best Animated Feature Film at the 2003 U.S. Academy Awards, and "Howl's Moving Castle" (2004)

received the Osella Award at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. Miyazaki was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 2005 Venice International Film Festival. "Ponyo" (2008) was his most recent directorial effort. He also contributed to the planning and wrote the screenplay for the Ghibli's newest films "The Secret World of Arrietty" (2010) and "From Up on Poppy Hill" (2011). Miyazaki's "The Wind Rises" was released on July 20, 2013 in Japan.

Texture Your World Contest

Mon Jan 21, 2013, 6:55 AM

Tell us the story of your world in textures!

We are surrounded 24 hours a day by objects that have texture, they may be smooth or bobbly, old or new, bold, bright, shiny or dull. You might see a texture every day and never notice it until you start looking. Do you sit at a desk that's textured, or pass an interesting tree on the way to work or school?

We want you, in the form of a triptych (thats 3 images forming a larger image see example here - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triptych ) to tell us the story of your textured world. Each individual texture should stand on its own, both as a useful resource and as a cohesive part of the whole story. What story you tell through your texture triptych is up to you - but they must be textures that tell a story of your world in some way.

There are 3 categories for this contest, each of which you can submit to twice.

Digital stock
These are textures created digitally by either manipulation of other stock or painting etc

Photographic stock
These are textures which have been photographed with either a film or digital camera with minimal post editing (if you do a lot of post editing on your textures you might want to consider submitting them to the digital category instead)

Traditional stock
These are textures created with traditional media then either scanned or photographed to convert to a digital medium for submission

Submission Examples

Portrait

Landscape

Square

Submission Rules

  • Each individual texture making up the triptych must be a minimum width/height of 1000 px
  • Full submission triptych must be a minimum width/height of either 1000 px or 3000 px depending on the orientation/formatting you choose, please see examples above.
  • Each deviant may enter up to 2 times per category. (Essentially that's 2 triptychs per category or 6 textures)
  • Judges reserve the right to eliminate entries that do not meet the minimum size requirements shown above
  • Only complete triptychs will be considered as legitimate entries. (3 textures on 1 file/deviation)
  • Triptychs must be submitted to the correct folder as per the contest category in StockandResources
  • Triptychs must be submitted into the correct Resources /Stock Images /Textures /... sub category depending on their style
  • Judges reserve the right to eliminate entries that are not submitted to the correct gallery or contest folder
  • Entries must be new as of the start date of the contest and must be your own work
  • Please state clearly in the description that the work is being submitted to this contest

The Transformation Challenge

Tue Jun 10, 2014, 12:08 PM

Show us "who you are" transformed into "what you could be".

You get three panels to show us a three-stage progression into a radically different person or thing.

Use the template. Any style. Any visual medium. Any tool, any machine. If you are shy, you can use an original character or object instead of yourself.

Three grand prize winners will be selected, their entries will be featured as a billboard on deviantART and Motherboard's website linking back to the artist's deviantART account. The winners will be flown, all expenses paid, to either Brooklyn, NY, Honolulu, HI, or Los Angeles, CA to collaborate with either Dash Shaw, Jasper Wong, or Jordan Crane in their studios and will each win a Microsoft Surface Pro 3.*.

*In order to qualify as a Grand Prize Winner, you must be able to travel between July 25th - August 1st to participate in the collaboration. Winners will be assigned to a specific city.

Are you up for this quest?
jordan crane
jordan crane

Jordan Crane was born in Los Angeles, California, which is still his home. He was educated in public school and attended USC for engineering. He self-published the first issue of Non in 1997. The anthology grew quickly, and by the fifth and final issue, it was an impressively designed package wrapped by a silkscreen cover, featuring top tier talent as well as his own Xeric award winning graphic novel Col-Dee. During this time, Crane published his first graphic novelette The Last Lonely Saturday, a simple story of love and death, which has become an enduring favorite.

Crane's specific particular design aesthetic could be found across his work, featuring warm covers accentuated by an eye for colors playing and fighting together. Crane's illustrated and design work has been critically recognized with several awards. In 2010, Jordan's biggest book design project, The Art of Jaime Hernandez was published by Abrams books. That same year, he launched www.whatthingsdo.com, a website portal featuring many of today's top cartoonists, a natural follow up to his previous editing work in Non.

Right now, Crane is finishing his graphic novel Keeping Two, a collection of short stories titled Lower the Living, and the fifth issue of his comic book Uptight, which will feature his first scifi story titled the Dark Nothing. His current work can be found in his ongoing comic book Uptight, published by Fantagraphics.

How did you use the Surface to create your artwork?

I used the Surface from start to finish. I used to work on paper, and my process is nearly the same digitally. I start by making notes, just words at this point, things that I'd like to draw, relations and associations on the topic. When a couple of interesting things start to poke out at me, I'll start sketching. At this point I do simple figure drawings to see if the idea has legs. So I open up Manga Studio, get my page sized, and start rough sketches. I push the idea through to the last panel, and when I have something that works, then reduce the opacity on the layer, and do the final tight drawing on a new layer. Then colors. I'll initially just fill the spaces with harsh contrasting colors to make sure I get all the nooks and crannies filled in. Then I'll find a pair of colors I like, something that's pleasing but still pretty argumentative. Then I will tone everything based on that pair. Then fiddle some more with the colors, and then done.

What programs did you use?

I used Manga Studio Pro from start to finish for this comic strip.

How long did it take to create the piece?

I worked on it for about 8 hours. Drawing and coloring from start to finish was about 4 hours. It was spread out over a couple of days, so I got to think about it a lot, so that'd account for another 4 hours. I do a lot of my best drawing inside my head.

How did you use the Surface to create your artwork?

It started as a sketch on paper and inked on vellum. It was then scanned on to the Surface. I transferred the same process that I normally use on the computer, but implemented the Surface instead. I was able to easily work on the illustration on the go. Something that wasn't as possible with my laptop, because it can be cumbersome taking it out while on the move.

jasper wong

What programs did you use?

I used Photoshop.

How long did it take to create the piece?

It took me about a week to complete the piece. I have a 1 and half year old daughter and she loves to play with the Surface. She likes to draw with the pen. But, it also slowed my progress. :-)

How did you use the Surface to create your artwork?

I started it as a sketch and then scanned it into the Surface. Here you can see a sketch.

What programs did you use?

I used Photoshop. The finishes were done entirely in Photoshop, on the Surface.

How long did it take to create the piece?

That's hard to say. I did other versions. And then I stare into space for a while. I don't know. Maybe a couple days?

Fellas World - Contest

Fri Feb 14, 2014, 2:09 AM

:note: Contest ended -see the winners here fav.me/d7cqu2v.

We all know Fella and dA wouldn't be the same without him anymore.
But did you ever wonder who he really is? Where does he come from? Why is he alone?
He is always at our side, lurking here and there, making your dA experience a little brighter and introducing you to new things all the time.

Your mission is to show us the world of Fella.
How does he live? Does he have pets? Is he the only one or are there other 'creatures' like him? Does he come from a distant planet? Is he the  result of an experiment?
What does he eat? Or maybe he doesn't need to eat at all?
What is he doing in his freetime? Does he like to cook or read a good book? Or is he more of an adventurer, exploring the world outside?

Below you can see a few artworks, that already show Fella working for dA or in random situations. Maybe these inspire you to come up with other details of his life.
