Commission for tlailaxu on FA of his sergal character fighting off against my character, Dark - He's a sort of roaming, easily pestered protective spirit that don't take kindly to nogoodnik Sergals.

There'll be two other images in this series, mostly of Sturm fighting random baddies :D

1 hr stress doodle - I’ve been wanting to flesh out these guys some more, the images i’ve done in the past have been somewhat incomplete, not like this is entirely better.

In Caelum Sky, This our the heaviest line of defense that heaven/ the angels have, called the Cherub. In classic lore, cherubs (not fattened babbies, I promise) were guardians of heaven’s gate - they’re represented by having four wings and three heads- a lion, a bird, and a human. In this story though, they’re almost entirely birdy. Hooray for interpretation!

Within the story, Cherubs are expressions of partially destroyed souls. When a spirit dies off after living in heaven for however many years, they’re separated by past, present and future souls. It’s entirely by random chance who becomes a cherub, and who becomes fodder for rebirth and new lives- you could have 2/3rds of yourself reborn hunky-dory, and the last bit is chosen for super awesome cherub duty. 98% of the time, they’re one soul- Past souls show up as striped markings on a cherub, future souls show up as dots/ circles. Present souls never get chosen. (the story goes into that a bit more but for the sake of quick explanation, this is good enough) Single-souled cherubs act mostly like obedient zombies: they attack, they follow orders, and they eat a shitload of demons. That’s their main purpose- being the black hole of troop disposal. Unlike all other heavenly counterparts, a dead cherub does not come back. They stay dead.

On some random chances, you can get both the past and future souled cherubs- these ones are a bit more aware of their surroundings and are allowed to make small battle-field decisions. Especially smart/ talkative cherubs are counted as elite, and are mid-battle commanders for their brethren. They’re heavily instinctual animals (mostly to kill and destroy demons) , and they’re not regarded with much thought beyond “Oh thank god the cherubs are here, now I can go home”

Cherubs have a double-jawbone- they’ve got teeth lining all the way down to thier feathery shoulders. At thier regular spot where any other bird’s mouth would end, there’s a junction- a rounded tooth held in place by a few loops of muscle wrapped around the side keeps it locked- when the cherub wants to disengage and open it’s mouth all the way up, it loosens those muscles, opening that mouth at least another 15 ft down. They attack demons pretty unceremoniously, just sorta flop down and go to work. Cherubs have an acute sense of smell, and a great memory for past, specific smells. Cherubs themselves smell like rosy sundrops on a blossomed flower—- with their mouths closed. When opened, they smell like a rotting trash heap.

If you’d like to read more about these buggers, you can find the whole saga here: caelum-sky.tumblr.com/ - though the cherubs don’t make an appearance in the first book till Chapter 23rd. In the second novel they’re around a hell of a lot more.

I wanna do more of these! I really gotta get a picture up for the hayyoth. This is a celebratory image in getting my Paizo and Fantasy Flight Games work done in time
