Why Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not great10 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Type design is a rather obscure profession but even the typefaces themselves don’t get too much attention by the general public. Most people could only name a few typefaces, but among those few are always Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica. Well-known and popular or not, in this article I will show you why Helvetica is not the great typeface people perceive it to be.
Arial is often frowned upon due to its history, but what most people don’t know is that Helvetica has a very similar history. A bit different, but as far as I’m concerned it’s just as dubious and embarrassing. As most people who are interested in typefaces might know, Max Miedinger is the designer of Helvetica. However, what most people probably don’t know is that Max Miedinger was not a type designer. Miedinger st

Typography is a rather obscure field, which is quite odd because typography is in everything you read. As such, it’s very important for a graphic designer to know everything there is to know about typography and preferably also the history and anatomy of typefaces. Bad typography is usually only consciously noticeable by type geeks (like me), however even someone who knows absolutely nothing about typography will find text with bad typography harder to read. In this article you will learn some basic principles and features to advance your typography.
Before we have a look at the features to improve your typography we have to select the right software. A few features which will be discussed in this article can be used pretty much regardless of the software but for most things you have to use genuine design software, so a program like Microsoft Word won’t suffice. You can achiev
The Silvertant type classificationBefore we move on to the series of articles about the different type classifications (starting with 'Venetian/Humanist') I think it's important to establish a proper classification system. The Silvertant type classification2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Why do we need to establish a new classification system?
To be honest, a system is limiting, and with the modern typefaces taking elements from various type classifications it's hard and at times seems pointless to try to categorize these typefaces. Regardless, it's important to know the history of typefaces and when certain features developed and a type classification system can help you keep track of things and label typefaces according to a wide range of parameters like x-height, stroke weight, contrast, texture, the shape of the serifs, the direction of the weight distribution etc. As I said in the previous article, the Vox-ATypI classification is a good point to start but it does need refinement. When we've established a proper system, we can then base the series of articles on

Sans serif — Roman
In this article/tutorial I will show you how to design a typeface. I will cover the basics and show you how to design advanced letters as well. There is so much I can talk about though, so if people like this article I might expand on this with future articles and get more into detail. I will only cover the design though, so you will have to research how to do the spacing and programming and turn your typeface into a usable font—or wait until I might do an article on that as well, but I don’t have such an article planned anytime soon.
What will we design?
I will first show you how to design some basic letters for a geometric sans typeface like Futura, because it utilizes geometric shapes, which is always my starting point for every typeface regardless of style. O

Trajan Replacement ChallengeAs there are only 3 entries so far, the deadline will be extended to November 30th 2013!Trajan Replacement Challenge6 months ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome to the next challenge of CRTextAndTypography
This is a series of recurring, but maybe irregular typography related challenges for everyone to take part in. They will have a start date and end date and each deviation must be submitted after the start date. Only deviations created with each challenge in mind will be accepted.
So without further ado, I present the:
Trajan Replacement Challenge
The main objective of this challenge is to evaluate the appropiate interaction between meaning, words, lettering and typefaces. The goal is to create a type treatment, or typographical logo, that focuses on one word or phrase as its main focus.
The idea is to find a movie or tv show logo that uses Trajan and give it a possibly more appropiate type treatment instead. You will find Trajan is used in a lot of movies and it has sort of become "The Hollywood Font".

I.I.T.Eyes featureThere is nothing strange when a Muslim makes a contribution for Islam or for Muslims. but when a non-Muslim does that, it raises feelings of admiration and respect among Muslims. and maybe raises eyebrows, confusion and questioning among many non-Muslims. throughout history, many non-Muslims expressed honest and positive opinions and thoughts about Islam. this expression takes different forms. here in deviantART, being an art community, it takes the form of drawing, photography and literature.I.I.T.Eyes feature2 years ago in Personal More Like This
so, I'd like to show my appreciation, support and respect to our brothers and sisters in humanity who are not Muslims, by featuring their Islamic-related works in my journal here. I call it "Islam In Their Eyes feature" or "I.I.T.Eyes Feature" like the title of this journal reads.
This will also allow Muslims to know these people out there and appreciate their work (and who knows, maybe make new friends ) these people who, in spite of being different from Muslims, having different faith, way of

Sans serif — Italics & weights
In the previous article of the typography series I presented some of the basic principles of type design and we started designing a geometric sans typeface such as Futura. In this article we will expand that typeface and add italics and alternate weights. Or rather, I will show you how to design italics and briefly present how you can modify your regular weight typeface to create alternate weights rather than having to re-draw the whole letter.

Dedicated to all Muslims who were severely, extremely angry with the "Innocence of Muslims" vids.
Not that we should take easy or not to protect our beloved Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), we should protect him and his namesake, but do it in manner that is based on facts, academics and good counter attacks. That video supposed to lure Muslims and trap them, to provoke and to show how dangerous and extreme Muslims can be. many had fallen into the trap of anger and violence, but not many who resolve to facts, academics and noble explanations.
Muhammad PBUH himself was a very forgivable man. He had suffer major violence and people had toyed with his name when he was alive, but he forgive them all for he believe that Allah is Most Forgiven and Most Compassionate. His act of forgiveness had put forth shame onto his enemies, and respect him afterwards.
If Muhammad PBUH sees us now, what would he think? Seeing that almost no one gathered for Subh prayer in the mosque around th
