Typography is a rather obscure field, which is quite odd because typography is in everything you read. As such, it’s very important for a graphic designer to know everything there is to know about typography and preferably also the history and anatomy of typefaces. Bad typography is usually only consciously noticeable by type geeks (like me), however even someone who knows absolutely nothing about typography will find text with bad typography harder to read. In this article you will learn some basic principles and features to advance your typography.
Before we have a look at the features to improve your typography we have to select the right software. A few features which will be discussed in this article can be used pretty much regardless of the software but for most things you have to use genuine design software, so a program like Microsoft Word won’t suffice. You can achiev
Why Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not great2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Type design is a rather obscure profession but even the typefaces themselves don’t get too much attention by the general public. Most people could only name a few typefaces, but among those few are always Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica. Well-known and popular or not, in this article I will show you why Helvetica is not the great typeface people perceive it to be.
Arial is often frowned upon due to its history, but what most people don’t know is that Helvetica has a very similar history. A bit different, but as far as I’m concerned it’s just as dubious and embarrassing. As most people who are interested in typefaces might know, Max Miedinger is the designer of Helvetica. However, what most people probably don’t know is that Max Miedinger was not a type designer. Miedinger st

Sans serif — Roman
In this article/tutorial I will show you how to design a typeface. I will cover the basics and show you how to design advanced letters as well. There is so much I can talk about though, so if people like this article I might expand on this with future articles and get more into detail. I will only cover the design though, so you will have to research how to do the spacing and programming and turn your typeface into a usable font—or wait until I might do an article on that as well, but I don’t have such an article planned anytime soon.
What will we design?
I will first show you how to design some basic letters for a geometric sans typeface like Futura, because it utilizes geometric shapes, which is always my starting point for every typeface regardless of style. O
The Silvertant type classificationBefore we move on to the series of articles about the different type classifications (starting with 'Venetian/Humanist') I think it's important to establish a proper classification system. The Silvertant type classification3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Why do we need to establish a new classification system?
To be honest, a system is limiting, and with the modern typefaces taking elements from various type classifications it's hard and at times seems pointless to try to categorize these typefaces. Regardless, it's important to know the history of typefaces and when certain features developed and a type classification system can help you keep track of things and label typefaces according to a wide range of parameters like x-height, stroke weight, contrast, texture, the shape of the serifs, the direction of the weight distribution etc. As I said in the previous article, the Vox-ATypI classification is a good point to start but it does need refinement. When we've established a proper system, we can then base the series of articles on

Sans serif — Italics & weights
In the previous article of the typography series I presented some of the basic principles of type design and we started designing a geometric sans typeface such as Futura. In this article we will expand that typeface and add italics and alternate weights. Or rather, I will show you how to design italics and briefly present how you can modify your regular weight typeface to create alternate weights rather than having to re-draw the whole letter.

Trajan Replacement ChallengeAs there are only 3 entries so far, the deadline will be extended to November 30th 2013!Trajan Replacement Challenge1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome to the next challenge of CRTextAndTypography
This is a series of recurring, but maybe irregular typography related challenges for everyone to take part in. They will have a start date and end date and each deviation must be submitted after the start date. Only deviations created with each challenge in mind will be accepted.
So without further ado, I present the:
Trajan Replacement Challenge
The main objective of this challenge is to evaluate the appropiate interaction between meaning, words, lettering and typefaces. The goal is to create a type treatment, or typographical logo, that focuses on one word or phrase as its main focus.
The idea is to find a movie or tv show logo that uses Trajan and give it a possibly more appropiate type treatment instead. You will find Trajan is used in a lot of movies and it has sort of become "The Hollywood Font".

Nayzak and FISIS...Assalaamu alaikum [peace be to you],Nayzak and FISIS...5 months ago in Personal More Like This
time for another pointless journal...
Since the time I started drawing Islamic related artworks I got hate mongers coming by the tons. I expected that. religion and politics always attract trolls. Many Islamophobes who see me drawing Islamic stuff consider me a target for their bashing. Lately a few people made the same statement (accusation) so I thought I have to make myself clear.
"Does Nayzak support ISIS? (not the ancient Egyptian deity, but the so called Islamic State in Iraq and Syria)
I believe the people who regularly visit my page and read my articles already know the answer. but just to make things clear for those confused, I DO NOT SUPPORT FISIS (I chose to call it "the Fake Islamic State in Iraq and Levant" because it's not just un-Islamic, it's ANTI-Islamic. calling it Islamic is misleading and deceiving). and to make things clearer: I don't support ANY political Organization that has the word "ISL
