The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.The Used Game Paradigm2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. Most video rental stores in America have gone extinct and outside specific Red Box Kiosks there aren't a lot of places for consumers to rent video games. The exception, of course, being thr

SNIPPY: evidence"Blasted mug!"SNIPPY: evidence2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I looked at it hatefully.
"This is all your fault!"
I attempted to throw the mug at the Arbitrator, to smash it, to let go of it.
Nothing of the sort was possible.
I flailed left and right. The mug did not budge. I could not let it go, no matter how hard I tried. It was as if it were glued to me with a strange static-like substance. It rolled between my fingers and from one hand to the other, but it was as if I were made of iron and the mug were a powerful rare-earth magnetic bearing coated with oil.
Why can't I let go of the mug?!
Did the Arbitrator's reconstruction of my organs have anything to do with this?
Upon giving up to prying the mug out of my hands, I turned to the Arbitrator and spoke.
I made my case calmly and clearly, pressuring various facts that my DNA couldn't possibly be on the mug and that I looked nothing like Captain and that it might as well scan my memories for evidence or something of that sort.

Pacific RimPlotPacific Rim2 years ago in Personal More Like This
An alien rift opens up in the pacific ocean and giant monsters start pouring out. After failing to stop them with our usual tanks and planes, the world unites to make giant mech robots punch the monsters to death. Because the robots are so big and complex, controlling them alone is too intense for a single human brain to comprehend. So mech robots are piloted by two crew members who mind meld with each other to share the power load. The better in-synch the pilots are with each other, the better the robots perform. The movie follows the events as monster outbreaks increase and a last ditch effort to close the portal is put into motion.
There is a LOT to get through in the movie in terms of world building. Sometimes so much so that you don't get a chance to absorb it all in. Likewise, since there's so much going on the characters don't get very developed either. Outside the 3 main characters, the rest of the characters are simplified ste

The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneySaw The Hobbit last night. It was very good... if a bit long. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for seeing all the little details interconnecting The Hobbit to Lord of the Rings and all that, but for the average watcher... eh... it kinda dragged. I overheard several people saying they fell asleep during the film, and I noticed more than once a number of people fidgeting and looking at their watches. Still, it's a damn fine movie and It's a shame we have to wait so long for the next two films. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Having The Hobbit being written during the beginning of Lord of the Rings is pretty smart. You could effectively watch the 3 Hobbit movies and then immediately move right into the 3 Lord of the Rings movies. Kudos to Jackson for that, it'll be great to marathon run the two trilogies back to back.
This movie was, like the book, much lighter and funnier than The Lord of the Rings and I was surprised at how much from the books they actually kept. They
Being Critical =/= HateLooks like I need to remind people about this again, as yesterday I got several comments in a row from people who assumed that me being critical about something automatically translated into me outright hating it. I don't know how to stress this enough but that's not the case... You can be critical of stuff you like and not hate it. I don't know why our culture tries so hard to force everything into such black and white terms but come on guys, really... being critical and smart about what you love doesn't mean you hate it.Being Critical =/= Hate1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Take the Dragon's Crown comic, for example, in which I was critical of the Sorceress's design. From that someone hypothesized that I must HATE the game, and that's farthest from the truth. I know full well that Vanillaware is an amazing studio and they do fantastic work. One of my favorite games of theirs is Muramasa the Demon Blade. Dragon's Crown has scored really highly and it's most definitely worth your money to buy/download it if you can. BUT... I can still be
Yoshi StoryI have to admit, I am incredibly surprised by the overwhelming success and appreciation of the recent comic "A Yoshi Story"Yoshi Story1 year ago in Personal More Like This
In less than 24 hours the comic has generated almost 200,000 views and been featured on a number of different outlooks including DA's tumblr, facebook, ICanHasCheezeburger, Memebase, and more.
As much as I would like to take credit for the comic, I want people to give proper credit due to DA user Commisar-Erdno for writing the story in the first place. All I did was draw it. Credit for the concept and execution goes to Erdno. So please be sure to check their DA page out and tell them how much you loved the comic.
It's also rather fun to see the comic being used as a Rorschach Test of people's optimism/pessimism. Either way, it's still fun to see everyone's interpretations of the story.
So thank you everyone for your support. I really did not expect a comic about a Yoshi sacrificing itself to save Mario to become so popular and loved by s

'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'I get that phrase a lot, that and "over react much?" whenever I bring up ANY issue, be it from a video game, politics, or whatever. There seems to be a lot of people who just don't wanna talk about anything at all, and would much rather these discussions just not exist so they can get on with their lives.'Why Are We Even Talking About This?'1 year ago in Personal More Like This
You'll be unsurprised to learn that I don't agree with that wisdom. In my books, if you don't do anything, nothing is going to happen. If there's an injustice in the world somewhere and you stay silent, that injustice isn't going to fix itself. It will just keep happening. That, my friends, is complacency.
Then of course there are those people who don't believe that the world will ever change, therefor there's no reason to try, and actively try to stop anyone who dares to stand up for something. I can't begin to describe how annoying that mindset is to me. It's almost sadistic in it's very nature, by actively trying to stop people from making the world a better place by being dismissi
Hobbit Study ComparisonThe goal of my Hobbit study was to interpret scenes from the book which were cut out of the 1977 animated film as if they were still there. Unbeknownst to me there actually is a rare book out there with several illustrations from the Rankin Bass production archives. So for comparison we're gonna look at how my version of Beorn and the Arkenstone compare to how Rankin Bass in 1977 would've interpreted things.Hobbit Study Comparison2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Aside from the fact that I clothed Beorn, I'm actually quite surprised at how accurate these scenes are from how I interpreted them in the Rankin Bass style. I was very surprised to see how the Arkenstone was envisioned, as I didn't think the
Starting a Webcomic - Four Words You Need to Know"Just fucking do it"Starting a Webcomic - Four Words You Need to Know2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I wanna preface this by saying that this is all opinion and observation, formed from my own experiences and perspective. In fact, I think it needs to be said that I create webcomics in a bit of a vacuum...
The other day I was talking with a graphic designer friend, and he mentioned how now and then he'd get together with other graphic designers just to hang out and share stories. He also mentioned that I don't have that with fellow web-comic artists or with other freelance illustrators. At the time he said this I sort of shrugged it off, but it's true and it's a bigger deal than I first thought. Sure, I have plenty of friends that have entered comic tournaments, or with aspirations of being webcomic creators, but few to none that really produce them. At the least, none I feel I can hang out with, online or off, and go "haha yeah fans amirite?" or "oh shit _____ linked to you?! sweet!". Most importantly, webcomics can be a work-intensive unrewarding hobby at times.
Late Lesson LearnedWhile doing research for the new SYAC, I actually stumbled upon something truthful on TVtropes.org. Usually I take everything from that site with a grain of salt, but this one bit actually was surprisingly honest and truthful about webcomics:Late Lesson Learned3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Webcomics work on a very different set of standards than other fiction. Almost all webcomic authors are working pretty much entirely alone as they both draw and script their comics and most do not plan any further along than to the end of their current story sometimes not even that far.
Many of them try to adhere to a schedule they aren't really capable of meeting, resulting in them rushing to meet their deadline and making mistakes that should be avoidable. So many of the good 10% lack qualities standard in traditionally professional works. This can be because of the lack of editorial input as well as the lack of lead time. Not all webcomics suffer from this, though, and even the ones that do can still be interesting. Arguably, some str

And this IS watercolor painting. 100% watercolor. Kthnxbye.
I've been a lot in traditional art society, and just... I spotted this artwork. No, at the first it was a photograph for me. For really long time I wasn't interested to take a look deeper at that common photograph until I got bothered by loads of people to take a peek on it.
That really knocked me out from chair, is not the fact it's 100% painting but it's watercolor. I've seen 100% photo looking a like acrylics, oils and really mixed medium ways of paintings but... watercolor alone? And that's from simple watercolor "squares" palette.
I'm not really fan of photo-realistic paintings, I do love real life paintings with very artistic touch and with it's own original style... but for this one I have lots of "wow" for this artist to master watercolor on insane level of skill by using simple techni

Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKSSo... that last journal was a doosie wasn't it? 500+ comments and counting! Yikes. I can always count on Anita Sarkeesian to give me tons of views, lol. All joking aside, that was a very serious batch of discussions. Anytime we talk about sexism and objectification of women in gaming or geek culture, it's sure to get a lot of responses.Sexism in Gaming Culture LINKS2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Sadly since Anita is such a hot-topic around the internet, there was more than one person who were trying to claim that there actually isn't ANY issue with the game industry involving sexism at all. To them, this whole idea that women are marginalized or objectified or treated badly both in the gaming industry and in geek culture is just false. It doesn't exist. And any attempt to explain why we need to change things is inherently flawed because there's no reason to do so.
So in the interest of trying to debunk that bullshit, I made a list of sources I accumulated around the internet to prove that this is indeed a problem. I think everyone can benefit f
