Dreamy Theodor KittelsenAs I've previously promised, after the articles about Sulamith Wülfing and about John Bauer, the time comes for an article about Theodor Kittelsen.Dreamy Theodor Kittelsen3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
...Theodor Severin Kittelsen, being a great representant of the Golden Age of Illustration, is one of the countless artists who received more attention and appreciation a long time after their death. I don't say "proper attention", it's still far from it.
His depictions of Scandinavian folklore creatures are said to be equally cannon to the trolls portrayed by the definitely more famous John Bauer. But, unlike Bauer, Kittelsen didn't focus just around trolls (which are, you must admit that, most of Bauer's creations - although his sudden death at young age is

So I love fanart. I think it's fun. I think it's a great way for someone to learn skills and build confidence in a relatively safe, amateur setting, but sometimes it's not sunshine and butterflies. Fanartists, because of the very visible yet niche nature of their work, are destined to encounter shitbags on the internet.
Since I've been sharing fan art online since 2002, I thought I'd type up some notes. This is just my experience/angle on things, so ymmv.
1. People will steal your art.
The difference between fanart and regular art is that it's recognizable by subject, and since you don't own the subject, everyone will assume they have the right to it. They'll put i

John Bauer and his trollsJohn Bauer's life was very short and very sad. Despite this, he left behind many illustrations that later became inspiration for loads of later artists, like Arthur Rackham, Sulamith Wülfing or Kay Nielsen. 36 gloomy years
Born in 1882 in Jönköping, Sweden, he grew up with two brothers and a sister, Anna, who died very early, at the age of 13, which badly effected John and his brothers and left visible marks in their minds for the rest of their lives. Their father used to own a charcuterie and the apartment they lived in was located above the shop.
He started sketching very early in his childhood, although there is no formal date known. In 1898, when young Bauer was 16, he moved to Stockholm to study art and two years
Golden Age of IllustrationGolden Age of Illustration3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
When in the second half of the 19th century newspapers and illustrated books became popular and widespread thanks to improvements in printing technology, many artists found their base to spread their skills. The official time span of the Golden Age of Illustration is said to be from 1880s to 1920s, but it varied a little bit between Europe and America.
While European illustrators were influenced mostly by the Pre-Raphaelites, Art Nouveau and Post-Impressionists (especially by Les Nabis, a group of Parisian artists), their American colleagues focused around Howard Pyle's Brandywine School of American Illustration in the Brandywine Valley.
Amongst the most popular artists of this time we find Arthur Rackham (UK), Howard Pyle (US), Ivan Bilibin (Russia), Theodor Kittelsen (Norway), Edmund Dulac (France), John Bauer (Sweden), Beatrix Potter (UK), N.C. Wyeth (US), Sulamith Wülfing (

Education and inspirations
He was born on the 16th of August 1876 (it was Wednesday) in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Before he became a student of the great Ilya Repin, he studied at the Art School of Anton Ažbe in Munich in 1898, so you can see that he gathered quite a good art education.
From 1902 to 1904 he travelled around Russian North. He became fairly inspired by the folklore of these a

Are there places were street photography is impossible? Are there countries easier than others, or harder than others? How is it street shooting like in exotic places, or places you never visited, places that are completely different from what you are used to? I asked a few street photographers around the world to share with us their experiences.

Japan is a fascinating country with an unusual mix of the traditional and modern. It's a magical place filled with anime, cosplayers, samurai, sushi, and all the strangest things imaginable. Wrong! Well, not really, but this is just the cliché, outer covering. When newcomers just scratch the surface of this country, this cliché is all they find. But, in reality, Japan is a place like any other: full of human beings who have normal lives with all their little dr

DeviantART is a bustling and active community, and with the high volume of artwork submitted on any given day, it can be easy to miss something. In fact, it's common for artwork to go viral across the Web or get a spike of traffic days, months, or even years after it was originally submitted.
Our new “What’s Hot” browse mode surfaces artwork that’s receiving a recent increase in exposure, regardless of when it was submitted.
A New Way To Surface Artwork
We often see artwork gain a lot of attention across the Web (after being shared on blogs, social sites, etc.), but by the time this recognition occurs, our search engines don't consider it when displaying recently "Popular" deviations. The new "What’s Hot" mode is built to celebrate these surges of exposure.
What's Hot vs. Popular
The content of the “What’s Hot” page uses an algorithm that reflects what artwork has recently garnered attention, regardless of when it was subm

(EDIT: I wanted to add this interview with a transman who transitioned about 20 years ago. He can tell you a lot more about the long-term results than me.
It's come to my attention that the Cracked article paints a horribly hopeless portrait of transitioning. I had intended to teach people that the process is currently unnecessarily difficult and should be easier, but instead it comes across like I'm trying to scare questioning transmen away from ever starting.
That was the opposite of what I wanted to do and I apologize to anyone who I've scared away from transitioning. I've since contacted the editor and asked for a revision.
Anyway, on with the updates!
1. The skin on my face feels rougher. This came out of nowhere and it's kinda bothering me. I know it's weird but I'm kinda vain about that.
2. I CAN CLENCH MY ABS FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER HOLY SHIT!
