As an awkward youth, reading was the only tool I was equipped with to avoid awkward social youths. During hard times and boring times, the joy of flicking through cheaply pressed pages cleared away all the rain clouds hanging around, and dragged me into the sunny times inside those fresh smelling bound publications.

Reading had always done so much for me, educate, humor, inspire, intrigue, avoid conversation. So I always thought it was time I should honour reading in some form or another. And so, a trifecta of events came together for this piece. The Billy Blue contest, with which I needed something to enter; The stumbling upon of old encyclopedias, which I could change; and as mentioned before, the feeling to honour reading.

And so I present, Why Reading Comes Alive, a sweet and simple homage to my favourite past time, with thirty two inked and separately cute pieces.

Enjoy

My entry for the Billy Blue- Change Your World Contest.

Reflective Statement:
In this image we were wandering about an amazing area full of rock formations taking pictures, climbing up and down everything in sight and just taking it all in. When my partner climbed up into this space it looked like the natural curvature of the rock was enveloping him and almost giving birth to him. It was quite beautiful and I had to set up this shot. The lines on the rock that the water has created over countless millenia blended with the lines of his body almost seamlessly. <3
Once we got home I edited this shot so that the blue veins streaking through the rock were highlighted while his skin tones blended seamlessly with the colours of the rock face. I also lowered the intense white of the open sky beyond the figure so that it better reflected the serene setting it was taken in, where the only noise was that of the waves crashing below us and the wind whistling through the rocks overhead.

This piece explores the context of my own internal changes, despite being young i have suffered from multiple mental illnesses. In the past few months have finally begun to break free from these issues and am on the road to recovery. The image is a self portrait, the double exposed floral arrangement is symbolic of my awakening and positive road to recovery, the flowers were photographed while floating within a stream, which is linked back into the struggles i have faced and will face in the future, as the water is a persistent current pulling me back into the darkness. Despite this as i recover the water is no longer a river but instead a quietly trickling stream.
I would like to think that in the future i am going to "change my world"

Mother Nature
-noun
Nature personified as a creative and controlling force affecting the world and humans.

A single tear runs down my cheek, as I stare blankly across the field. A wind blows through the trees and I close my eyes and let her kiss my face. She whispers to me softly as I inhale deeply drinking in Her cool, crisp spring air. Chilling my lungs and filling the empty space I've grown accustomed to.

She is my oldest friend, my greatest teacher, my comforter and my escape. I exhale slowly, the cold air now warm against my lips as she leaves my body. I am still here. I am still me. I feel lighter then I did before.

I sit in silence as she sings around me, her ebb and flow a rhythmic dance.

Breathe.
Breathe in.
Breathe out.

Breathe.

Sometimes the most effective way to "Change Your World" is simply to immerse yourself in it. It's easy to lose sight of the bigger picture in difficult times but if you take the time to simply be in nature, away from man-made interference, the change happens from within, breathing new new life into your soul.

In this series of self-portraits I was hoping to capture the rejuvenating change that being in nature has on my being. The photos were created almost entirely within my camera using multiple exposures - merging self portrait silhouettes with natural imagery, the two intertwining and changing into something new. I wanted to keep the photographs as raw as possible so it was important for me that the only changes I made in photoshop were the Circle frames and typography.

Reflective Statement:

We can make a big change not only at home and in the society but in the entire world if we help one another. Life would be easier, happier and even more wonderful if we can make a change within ourselves to do what is right and good for us and to other people as well. No walls high enough if we work hand in hand.

Creative process:

I took the photo of the brick wall using my Canon 550D. I transfer the photo to my iPad and painted the ants, stem, leaves, spaghetti noodle and meatball using Procreate painting app for the iPad..

With technology constantly evolving and becoming a piece of people's lives, we are becoming more accustomed to seeing nature's wonders on a screen, rather than in real life. My primary motive behind the image was to show the contrast between nature and the modern first world lifestyle. I hope nature will one day become more of a priority than materialism.

Everything in the image was photographed and digitally composited by myself.

You were with me 13 years and i can't be more happy for that. I'll just want to wish you the best of the journeys, wherever you go from now on and i'll hope you remember us, your family , because we've always had a place in our hearts for you, our beloved grumpy dog.
I want to dedicate this piece to all the pet owners out there :) (Smile)
