Deviant and Art MentionsMentions: Connecting PeopleDeviant and Art Mentions2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.
How to Mention
There are four ways to mention a deviant.
Introducing Improved CommentsWith over 1.5 million comments posted per day, deviantART's commenting system provides the backbone for fostering relationships across the globe. Whether mentoring one another, providing artistic support, or checking in with a friend, commenting is one of the site's most used and loved features.Introducing Improved Comments1 year ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
To highlight this vital aspect of community interaction and provide more control around conversations, we’re proud to release the first in a series of improvements to comments.
The Featured comments option allows deviants to showcase the most meaningful or interesting feedback they’ve received — helping those comments stand out from the rest. When someone leaves a feature-worthy reply on one of your deviations, you can now highlight that comment from the pencil menu.
Featured comments on deviations are highlighted and denoted with a special label.

Submit to deviantART Directly From SketchBook AppsDeviantART is proud to announce that SketchBook users on iPad and Android tablets now have the ability to create and submit art directly from their devices to deviantART!Submit to deviantART Directly From SketchBook Apps2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
Our recent partnership with Autodesk has allowed deviantART to become the first community integrated into SketchBook -- the professional-grade painting app that is easy to use for every artist. Merging these two powerhouse environments means that tablet users will be able to publish their creations from SketchBook directly to their deviantART accounts. Deviants will also be able to use the app to browse the inspirational works of other SketchBook artists in the autodesk-sketchbook group.
This is a first step in what will become a much fuller integration that will bring more deviousness to SketchBook and add a powerful creation tool to the arsenals of deviant artists everywhere, as we welcome new SketchBook users into the deviantART community.

The chaptered comic strip, has been collected into a 100-page graphic novel – and to the still-uninitiated:
It is not quite like anything you’ve probably ever seen before. The story follows “Zee Captain” and his sidekicks as they amble through a post-apocalyptic landscape. And while that hardly seems new and different, it’s the unusually superlative graphic quality of the comic cells and the Monty Pythonesque dialogues and leaps of logic that can become quite mesmerizing. Zee Captain, his face hidden by a gas mask that gives him a Darth Vaderish look, wears what looks like a Soviet Red Army uniform from WWII, and the strip does have nourish WWII feel. It’s as if the nuclear holocaust on Hiroshima and Nagasaki had never ended and spread to every major city on Earth. But

Celebrate deviantART's 13th Birthday!Celebrate deviantART's 13th Birthday!2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
On the day of your birth, you were likely surrounded by those who loved you, who would lead you through the rough first scary years of life, and who would stand by as you grew into a capable person. As time passed, others may have drifted into your life, and even if you didn't know it, they also nurtured and cared for you in much the same way, helping to shape the person you would become.
When a community like deviantART is born, the same common thread binds its originators and founding members together. Over the years, more and more creative beings drift into its life and strengthen its core every single day, resulting in an exponentially inspirational powerhouse for the sheer fact that they've become a part of it. That nurturing spirit, that inherent support system, that caring community inspires deviantART to grow, and it comes from inside each and every one of you.
Tags are the new KeywordsKeywords on deviations were built to be an important tool to help discover artwork. But as deviantART grows and strives to create new ways to discover great content, we’ve found that keywords as we currently use them have become underutilized. We think we can do better -- and can make a better experience for the community -- by making some changes.Tags are the new Keywords10 months ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
In the coming month, keywords will transition into tags, and we’ll be improving the way they work. Tags will better surface artwork, allow deviants to form communities around topics, make it easier to find other artists and art appreciators, and increase discoverability.
For example, if you're a fan of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles it can be difficult to know what to search for: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ninja Turtles, TMNT, Donatello, etc. Public tags provide visibility to see how others are tagging their deviations, which will allow you to align your behavior to the norm, or ch

On March 1, 2012 the Nevada DMV issued the first license for a Google Driverless Car. The idea behind this innovation is that one day soon new technology will drive cars safer and more skillfully than humans, thus saving lives and billions of dollars in car crashes. How well this idea catches on is a bit questionable, given the powerful “romance” of driving one’s car, but it’s certainly an indicator of things to come in the daily intersection of human and artificial intelligence and mobility. There have always been those who have dreamed of stepping into a mechanical exo-skeletal-type “suit” and letting the engineering do the work, insta

Having been thinking a lot about the origins of our globally held Dragon mythos in a recent article Reptilicus Infernicus, I couldn’t help but notice the Cthulhu legend was always lurking at the edges of my mind as I was researching the subject matter.
The Enemy at the Gates, the “Other”, forever lurking in the darkness and plotting an invasion most evil and an enslavement most hideous, is probably the original seminal “narrative” that was born when humans first acq

T he Deviousness Award, bestowed in recognition of exemplary membership and an outstanding spirit of helpfulness and mentoring within the DeviantArt community, has recently undergone a reevaluation to provide a focus and a re-definition as to just what Deviousness truly represents.
The award is given once per month to honor a deviant who has gone above and beyond in their services to the DeviantArt Community. The 189 recipients of the Award thus far have brought something to the community that was not there before their presence, and it's our duty — and honor — to publicly recognize their efforts in doing so.
Early on, Deviousness was given more than once per month to a deviant whose invo

Beginnings of Site Simplification
It’s no secret that DeviantArt is a complicated site. Have you ever invited a friend to DeviantArt, only to have them ask a bunch of questions about how to get started? Or have you ever spoken with a fellow deviant about a feature you use daily, only to learn they didn't know that feature existed? It’s our aim to make a new deviant's first experience as inspiring and welcoming as those who have made this community their home. We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make DeviantAr

I believe in deviantART. Which is to more accurately say I believe in the concept and the reality of the deviantART community.
When in contemplation of the eternal wellspring that is the deviantART project and how it has become the engine keeping my heart and mind on a full burn as I strive to be an upstanding member of the community as well as a helpful architect and eager participant in the conversation -- my thoughts inevitably settle upon my attempts to define my concept of Gratitude.
