How can I draw like you?
This is my point of you on this question.
Once again.. this is just MY opinion, and not everybody will agree with it.. but.. here it is
I'd probably not recommend you try to emulate my style or my way or working.
What I would recommend though is that you try to go outside and sketch, sketch people in the street, people walking, sitting, getting up, taking off their clothes or putting them back on, people hugging, people fighting, people in conversation in a group, people on the bus, swimming, dancing, eating, ( lot's of eating as it is pretty hard to convey exactly the feeling of eating), sleeping, people thinking... If you want to tell stories, most of your images should have people thinking.. that's what is going to make your images come alive.
Use a tablet if you have one, a sharpie, a pastel, a rock dipped in ink..anything that can make a mark.
The tool is cool, but secondary.. first.. you n
My Two cents on Portfolio ReviewsYou know, I see quite a bit of portfolio on a regular basis, and even more so when I go to comic con and CTN.My Two cents on Portfolio Reviews2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This time around was the same thing, I saw quite a few portfolios. Some good ones and some that miss the mark.
There were a few in particular that caught my eye.. a few extremely good ones, and a few that just didn't work, and I wanted to try and share my opinions about portfolios in general.
This is just my point of view, based on MY experience and definitely not a definitely law, rule, or "must do". Just what I noticed in many student's and young professional's portfolios.
The first thing that strikes me is how similar portfolios can be from one student to another..I can almost always tell when one student is from Art Center, San Jose State, Otis, Sheridan or any other major school. It's a good thing and a bad thing. Mainly a bad thing though
Just a few personal thoughts on portfolios since I just came back from comic con and saw a ton over there.
Your portfolio should be a r

When you see an artist you like and you are trying to figure his work out... the question that gets asked a lot is" How did you do it?"
What software did you use to make this effect?
What is your technique?
These are questions that won't get you anywhere. It's like asking for the fish.
A question you should probably ask is WHY did you do this?.. WHAT were you thinking?
When you ask this question, you are thinking about the principles of fishing, and not just about catching A fish.
If you wonder why, then you won't be stuck with the HOW.. you will most probably create your own "HOW", your own method of putting your WHY into existence..and this is what will really make you unique.
Once again.. this is just my take on things.
be really dedicatedSo, I was drawing at work yesterday (I'm now at WB btw, yay!), when I just looked down, startled, and thought, "This is what I wanted it to look like." I suddenly couldn't fathom how that had happened. Like I don't remember when I got to the point where someone tells me their idea, then I'm able to sit down and just MAKE THAT THING. I remember being someone who couldn't figure out how to do that, and I acknowledge being the me I am now, but where were the two bridged and when did I cross? This whole week has kind of been like that - me thinking about the person I was when I joined this site and the person I am today.be really dedicated1 year ago in Personal More Like This
On that note, lemme take you back to a journal entry from August 2007, essentially at the start of my second year of USC (I was getting a Master's in Comm. Management):
"My career counselor at my school (which btw, I feel, MUST train its employees to dissuade bright-eyed students from having any ambitions outside of the SPECIFIC interests of the
CT WIPs - TVB The UnfinishedAlmost forgot to start this journal! I want to release every unfinished TVB song I have to you guys so I'm obviously gonna need a new pic of the bandCT WIPs - TVB The Unfinished1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Concept: So the songs aren't all polished up or done, yet I want to release them for download anyway. Draw band members Rion, Abbey and Gibson in a way that reflects that.
Canvas size: 1000x1500 at 100dpi.
Brush used for sketching: Pencil sketch (16x16) scaled at .40, brush dynamics: Pressure - Opacity and Size.
Their hair is unkempt and they're not fully dressed; you can see their underwear.
Even though Gibson is considered the leader of the band, as the shortest, Abbey is in the middle for composition's sake.
Facial expressions should sum up each member. Uncertainty, neutral, and outgoing.
Neutral stance for them all because I love those indie album covers with th

•Stumbled upon the above picture on tumblr. I first imagined a highschool bully for Abbey for TΛB. The idea for Hana to be Abbey's older sister came some time afterwards when brainstorming Hana's backstory.
•Stumbled upon this picture as well. Primarly saved the image as clothing refs for Michiko Toyoda. I always commented on how Cara (who's name I didn't even know at the time) looked like an ideal daughter for Michiko.
•So the base idea for Hana was set. She would be the daughter of someone with Michiko's likeness and instead of being

My 2 cents about educationON THE SUBJECT OF SCHOOLS, I FELT COMPELLED TO CHIME IN. If you can afford an expensive school then take it if you like but if you can't then obviously don't go to an expensive school. Just like you wouldn't buy a car you couldn't afford. My 2 cents about education2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The best thing about the "good" schools are the students because when you hear a school is great everybody flocks there, including many of the most talented... but notice I said "many" and not "all" the most talented.
"Superstars" can come from city, any shape, any color, ANY AGE. We've seen it many times before.
The best way to cultivate talent is to interact with other talented or potentially talented people. It just makes us all work even harder. I had the great fortune of being in the same school and year with Pixar's James Robertson, Dani Strijleva, Ben Su and John Lee. And these are just a handful of the very talented people from my year. Just by being in the same class, this has influenced me to work harder than ever when I really didn't w

ARTIST'S BLOCK - HOW TO BEAT ITHow do you deal with "Artist's Block?"ARTIST'S BLOCK - HOW TO BEAT IT2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I don't care who you are, or how well you draw, one of these days, the Art Block Fairy is going to pay you a little visit. When that day comes, ideas will be scarcer than possums driving pickup trucks. Despite the randomness of that metaphor, how you handle artist's block will decide when you'll get those creative juices flowing again. Some of you will decide to pause and have a snack. I can tell you from experience that this doesn't do much to kick-start the imagination. When that doesn't work, there's always the option of getting a second snack. But eventually, you'll get too frustrated and too full to keep doing that. There's got to be another solution. So you decide to follow the prevailing wisdom, which is to go for a walk to refresh yourself, in the hopes that inspiration might return. The walk is pleasant, but almost mythical in its fecklessness. If walks worked, the beach would be teaming with cartoonists and write

i get rid of everything -
one summer i found
a dead stag beetle
laying on the pavement,
brittle and crisp
dried out by the sun,
he must have thought
that he'd died and
gone to hell
the year i got hit
in the temple
with a hammer, hard
but not hard enough,
funny what happens
when you pull a voice
out of its chest
just because it looks
done, slick and silver
and only a sliver meant
what it said, i feel
deflated, i wish
i'd have known then
that in a couple
of years i'd have written
as a bad dream, written
you off in a poem
with the leaves and the
trees and the moon
as a fat white opal, sunken
into the wall that divides us,
the border from
my land to yours,
she is nothing but
to me -
what if all the dead
opened their mouths
and said everything
they wished they had?
(i saw the stars weeping when my nose bled)
How art tutoring should be nowadaysYes. Another one of my rants that starts with a personal experience. How art tutoring should be nowadays1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
It was a day like any other, and I was just surfing DeviantArt, browsing the many deviations in my inbox. While I did so, my eye wandered to something that was called an 'tutorial on manga anatomy'. As usual, I was curious about the content. And as the preview image was pretty small, I wanted to check this out. It seems like this girl, let's name her Abbey (it's not her real name, but I think calling her 'that girl' is so damn confusing) had made a tutorial on male manga anatomy. Nothing wrong with that, you'd say. But I've been following Abbey for a while already. I originally met her in the forums, asking for feedback on one of her fanart drawings. Mostly anatomy related stuff. I gave her some tips. We talked a bit. And I followed her soon after, as I thought her art looked pretty promising altogether.
Now, I didn't know Abbey in real life. But she was a beginning artist, nowhere towards a level

A lot of you probably wonder where the hell our mobile apps are. I do. Quick answer: They're trapped under a bigger project. It's worth the wait, but we're far overdue on release. The biggest problem has been the Message Center, whose architecture, look and feel, etc. simply doesn't port over to Mobile & Tablets. For these, we need to streamline the incredibly powerful experience of deviantART's message center, so that it can be consumed on smaller screens without having to click lots of buttons.
Activity Feeds are supposed to be the obvious solution. But at deviantART, people love their Message Centers specifically because they aren't feeds. Each item from your +watch list, or Feedback area comes in as an item. Each item must be removed from the Message Center by you. This is great because it allows us to

We all love cameras that have all kinds of fancy options, because, who wouldn't?! But many of us find ourselves in situations where we didn't have an awesome camera with us, but did have a handy-dandy camera on our mobile phone and got a great shot.
Over at Photo--Assignment, we asked our members to share their best photo taken with a mobile phone. Many photographers will tell you that it's not the camera that make a photo great but the one behind it.
