The F Works
Welcome to the 10th in the series of The F Word. Recently I asked my watchers in a poll about their one favourite work by an artist in deviantART, with a reason as to why they chose it, even if it wasn't mandatory. I also have a few more wonderful works to feature as well along with some other information around dA including contests!

passion into your profession. But there is a way of measuring your chances on being
able to get work and eventually sustain a living from it.
Accepting commissions or freelance for low payment won't help you. You can think any penny counts, but it will lower the worth of your work and damage the market.
How to measure that you are ready?
You probably have high goals, but they are usually not your first step. You must search out the clients who can be that first step. Often found in the card game industry, book cover illustrations and smaller game company's.
Look at the artwork shown by a company such as the card game company: Fantasy Flight games. Compare your skills with the average of their artworks. If it matches yours, you will have a chance. However, keep in mind that those artworks had been done in a limited timeframe, usually within 12 hour
The most amazing thing happened today! This morning, a guy rand my doorbell and i thought that was a little weird because i wasn't expecting anyone. He said he has a delivery for me with 2 tubes from deviantART. I was really surprised because i didn't remember giving my address (it was such a long time ago that i did probably) or didn't remember ordering anything and only until i opened them did i realize they were print gifts from my wishlist! But i have no idea who sent them :icontearyguyplz: They were both prints of this artworkThe most amazing thing happened today!1 year ago in Deviant Events More Like This
and i am not sure if there were too separate people who sent them (they appear to have been sent at different times) or one person. BUT WHOEVER YOU ARE THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU WONDERFUL PERSON!
The prints are amazing looking! Kudos to deviantART because the quality of the print is astonishing the prints are on material not paper and that not only makes them more durable but it also has a very neat oil painting feel to it.
This just made my week! I will

Beginnings of Site Simplification
It’s no secret that DeviantArt is a complicated site. Have you ever invited a friend to DeviantArt, only to have them ask a bunch of questions about how to get started? Or have you ever spoken with a fellow deviant about a feature you use daily, only to learn they didn't know that feature existed? It’s our aim to make a new deviant's first experience as inspiring and welcoming as those who have made this community their home. We’ve spent a lot of time thinking about how to make DeviantAr

This topic is about rates and wages that an artist should start to consider when taking on a new job. This is my advice, so take this as advice.
So let’s begin. As an artist you should know right away that you are valuable. You can recreate people’s imagination and ideas into reality. You are the one who brings people together to be able to all see the vision for the final product. This is valuable. Keep this in mind when you take new jobs. Think about how many hours you plan on slaving over iteration after iteration. Because even though you may have a voice, if you agree to whatever the arrangement are, you must live up to their standards. So make sure you are paid well.
Imagine a client asks you to do 50 hours of work for only $500 dollars. That’s $10 an hour. That is not enough. You can go get a job that could pay you as much if not more, without being an artist. I’ve seen people’s salaries as low as 30k a year. This is not acc

Shine a Light
Light means so many things in our lives beyond mere illumination.
Cinematographers call the hour just before the sun sets “the magic hour.” Movie producers and directors schedule the shooting of love scenes and other important moments in their script to take advantage of the powerful effect that “magic hour” sunlight subliminally exerts on our psyches. The Dutch master painters of the 17th century were expert in focusing the eye on the “story

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."—Prof. Albus Dumbledore
Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian times in which map

airheadOMer completes: "...she has a brilliant and copious use of color. All her work is very intricate and lavish while remaining fairly luminous and simple. It has a wonderful flow to it and is, basically, quite beautiful. She has ineffable talent and her work shows that."
With this being said, let's see what agnes-cecile has to say!

You see, today I was hit by a bombshell. Things are very bad right now and I need help to get the word out about my tutoring business. Basically, I need to get work ASAP or I am royally screwed in ways you can't imagine.
I will be teaching basic Japanese and advanced English via Skype. Lessons are IDEALLY $30 an hour, but I am willing to negotiate and there are free consults where I will have a video chat on Skype with the student in the language they want lessons in to see what level they are at. The hours are flexible and go from Monday to Friday, and payments can be either all in advance or half first and half after the week's lessons are complete. I'm aiming to work a MINIMUM of 5 hours a day during weekdays. Also, once I start earning more money, I'll be mailing gifts to hard working students using a percentage of my own earnings. Anyone that is interested, please note me

DeviantART community, I am very honored and very pleased to announce that for today, we will be having Arthur Fong, a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation Studios. He is part of the team who made us giggle with The Croods and made us feel with so much awe in The Rise of the Guardians especially to all the Jack Frost Fans out there. The interview will be all about some insights on the modern day cartoons and to see how the persons behind the cartoon shows that we love work and how they put so much effort in making us smiles each time we watch such great movies and shows.

The Opposite of Speed Painting (by Matt Kohr)If youtube viewers (in general) have decided that speed painting is awesome, what must the opposite be? Is painting slowly a waste of time? In this post I'll argue that painting slowly not only saves time, but creates much better results. The Opposite of Speed Painting (by Matt Kohr)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The Allure of Speed Painting
I've talked about this particular issue in previous videos, so I'll be brief here. In short, speed paint videos create a very unrealistic expectation for art-making. Art takes time. Period. Not only are these youtube videos showcasing a sub-optimal painting method, they're also speeding up the playback to an absurd degree. It's totally understandable that a new digital artist might feel disheartened at the slow pace of their own mark-making after watching such videos. So if you're in this boat - you're not alone. The video below elaborates on this issue, as well as painting 'silhouettes' (and other visual development shorthand). So if

Le Gouffre is a wonderful animated short film. A joy to experience.
But there’s a second story to be told in all the ancillary documents and videos produced in completing that film. They now serve as an invaluable treasure trove to beginning film producers. The film’s leitmotif came to define the lives of the three young men attempting their own leap

Appreciation and some advice for beginnersI have had this journal in mind for quite a long time, thinking I will find a time to write it down after I find a job (so that I can give 'advice' as a professional ). I've been less active in the past weeks since I was on a probation in a game company and I thought I would make it this time, unfortunately today I was told I have to go back to job hunting again. Anyway I'm not gonna wait any longer since some of my fellow deviants have been asking for advice for a long time.Appreciation and some advice for beginners2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before I start – my apologies if some points in this journal are not clear because of language, I am not a native English speaker.
I'm not giving these advice as a professional or an elite artist (I hope I was!), just sharing my learning experience and some personal understanding of conceptual design and arts. Please ignore or correct me if I got things wrong.
Ok. Some related information about myself – I studied computing at university, in my final year I found myself really lack of interests in programming or
