Hullo, Nerdfighters! I am WickedBatGirl, aka Elphie, and I am here to give you your first Secret Project!!!
However... you won't really submit to DeviantArt. At least, not just yet.
The school year is once again going to start for most of us (I'm pretty sure, at least) and after watching John's letter, I got some inspiration to have us do a little project.
I would like it if you all would create letters/notes (you can add drawings, of course) to other Nerdfighters to encourage them throughout this school year. Please make them 8 1/2" by 11", or standard US Letter Size, and send them to deviantnerdfighters at gmail. I'll look through them all individually and make sure they're all right. Then, here comes the awesome part: on August 24th (a Friday) everyone who submitted a letter will get a letter back from someone else!
So, for example, if both Billy and Sasha (random names here) both sent me a

Couple of days ago I came across a series of notes & quotes made my various Japanese artists on how to improve drawing. This was not really an article per say but more of cut & paste collection from different source, so the artists had very different background varying from manga-ka, animators & illustrators (including general illustration). While some of them did have specific approach in development, majority of them had 1 thing in common. Which is to weight the practice in quantity, in other word "draw as much as you can".
To me this was rather obvious cause I some what went through this practice earlier in my as I became so called "Artist". (Well that's what people call me and not what I personally feel...) Although the difference is that initially I didn't do it because I wanted to improvement but I just picked up pencil because I like drawing. But in any case their was couple of

What Makes Your Character A Sue?Warning: very long journalWhat Makes Your Character A Sue?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So, I've seen so much crap about Mary/Gary Sues around the internet. It's not just on deviantART, it's posted anywhere where you can write your own character. Y!Gal, Livejournal, FF.Net. Anywhere. But there's something that a lot of people don't understand when it comes to character writing. And that's development.
What makes a good character? A believable personality. A believable background. A character that readers can understand and relate to on certain levels. When you pick up a book and read it, you'll notice that many things are different compared to fanfics that people post online. One thing is that EVERY character could be picked apart and called a Sue from the narrow minded Fandom Sue Police.
For now, I will specifically talk about the Transformers fandom. Mostly because it's what I work with and what I read the most during my internet escapades. Keep in mind that all of what I am saying is based off four years of knowledge and statistics
Understanding HDR Mode and How to Use ItHDR Mode is a camera setting which, though long-available on DSLRs, is becoming increasingly accessible through other devices such as point-and-shoot cameras and mobile phones. When used properly, it can be of benefit to an image; though I have come across far too many incorrect uses of HDR Mode in my short lifetime, the result of which is an ugly image. When used properly, it should be difficult to tell it was used. Likewise, when used incorrectly, it sticks out like a sore thumb. In this article, I will explain the whats, whys, whens, hows, and finally, the don'ts, of HDR mode, as well as provide alternatives!Understanding HDR Mode and How to Use It1 month ago in Art Features More Like This
What is HDR Mode?
Before I explain what HDR Mode is, I need to explain dynamic range. In a short, easy-to-understand explanation, dynamic range is the range of lights and darks in an image. Don't get this confused with contrast, which instead relates to the difference between l
Wacom Pen Nib a bit short? Might not be the nib...I've noticed recently that on heavily-used Wacom pens, especially those owned by a complete klutz such as myself, have a tendency to eventually get really short nibs. So short that it can only detect pressure when held completely perpendicular to the screen. At first you think, "Oh, wow I need to change the nib, that is seriously worn down, geez!" And when you change it out for a fresh one, it's JUST as short as before....Wacom Pen Nib a bit short? Might not be the nib...2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what's wrong? To find out, give your pen a back-and-forth shake. Does it sound like the innards of the pen are shifting, rattling back and forth? Press on the eraser tip. Does the tip's length suddenly come back? If so, this means that the body of your pen has begun to come apart, thus making the shaft longer and loosening up the inside. (The following is a description of an Intuos4 pen. But others should be similar.)
To fix this, it's an easy matter of removing the duo-switch, (just get a fingernail underneath it and pry it, don't worry, it's strong,) then the co

Shortbread - sort of like marmite, you either hate it or love it. I have to be in the mood for it - but it is quite lovely. Generally, it originates from Scotland. Walkers Shortbread is actually Scotlands largest food exporter! Shortbread is fairly simple to make and aside from burning it, not much can go wrong. So if you've not tried making it before (or eating it) start now!

Critiques: The artist's worst nightmare....Or so it is often thought. But it should never be.Critiques: The artist's worst nightmare....2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
(Please note, I'm not necessarily talking about deviantart's critique system, though this certainly applies to it. I'm talking about all feedback, whether in comments or notes, in person, or on another site. Deviantart simply has a good format for others to leave feedback to an artist.)
In art school, you tend two get two different types of young artists: people who are infatuated with their work, and people who have no confidence in it at all. But really, it all boils down to the same thing: as artists, we are incredibly reliant on other people's judgement of our work for our self-esteem. It sounds a bit stupid, but I don't know that I've talked to any serious business artists who say otherwise (though if you do, please tell me). Artists often view their work as an extension of themselves, or their soul, poured out on paper. We seek other people's approval, b

Modern Russia, land of frightening homophobia.Hi everyone, this is NurIzin : "former Commissar, and observer"Modern Russia, land of frightening homophobia.10 months ago in Personal More Like This
I post this entry because I think there is a huge issue, problem in nowadays Russia people should be aware of : strong homophobia. Why I post this today is because a Russian person who immigrated to Belgium I know, recently shared a anti-gay video that will be linked here, from facebook, called "sodomy is not normal". By doing so this person particulary dissapointed me, but showed how strong this hate plea is.
While homophobia is a quite widespread phaenomena, I think it is worth to enlight the case of Russia. USSR years haven't bred left-winged people, nor taught tolerance. It should be noticed that Putin, the now leader of Russia, who is promoting the homophobic law that are now passed, was an agent of the KGB.
But let's come to the real issue : Recently, Russia passed a bill against "homosexual propaganda", that is clearly an act of discrimination against LGBT community : http://www.fightdiscrimination.eu/news-and-event
PE Prose Basics: Revise and EditProse Basics Week is winding down now and hopefully you've learned a lot from the brilliant past articles. But, there's more to writing than just getting that first draft done, isn't there? That's where the next big crucial step comes in: revision.PE Prose Basics: Revise and Edit1 month ago in Literature Features More Like This
The Art of Revising:
Revision is such a huge topic to cover, especially since there are many ways to go about it. You can do self-edits, which always are a good first step, or you can get outside revisions from peers. Both are good ideas to really get your work to be top notch. But, the big thing to remember is that there's more to just editing your work than cleaning up a few spelling and grammar mistakes. Revising also includes corrections to sentence flow, scenes, and sometimes overall plot. So, before we jump into some ways to edit, here are a few different terms of methods of editing that may be handy to know-- especially if you're asking a peer to help you with revisions.
May Day 2013Dear comrades of the CPDA,May Day 201310 months ago in Personal More Like This
Today is May 1st, International Workers Day. It is a day that we on the Left hold dear, for it symbolizes the unity of the world labor movement. It is also a day that has become a rallying point for the immigration movement in America. May Day is also being celebrated with all the traditional pomp and circumstance in the remaining Socialist capitals of the world. Yes, May Day is upon us once more!
I shall provide a list of articles detailing the international news and happenings for May 1st, and I request that we all add to them in the comments section. What is happening in your local area? Does your nation celebrate May Day? Here in America, the spirit of May Day has been largely usurped by the Capitalist Labor Day later on in September.
Things going on today:

1. Saving your .psd with all layers hidden makes a smaller file compared to saving it with all layers visible.
2. You can use the Crop Tool to quickly increase the canvas size of an image by holding down Ctrl + Alt whilst dragging the Crop Tool outside the current canvas.
3. If you want to see only one of your layers at a time, hold down Alt whilst clicking the eye icon of the layer. (do it again to show all layers again)
4. Holding down Alt while in a dialog box turns the Cancel button into a Reset button, so you can reset the values back to default.
5. If you want to just quickly check a very heavy .psd file, you can hold down Shift + Alt while clicking the Open button. This way Photoshop will open a flattened version of the file.
6. You can change the gray background that surrounds your image with the Paint Bucket Tool, just hold down Shift and make click on the background.
7. Not a very unknown tip, but if y
