The meaning of x is not Algebra, Patrick!“Tell me the meaning of life” she said cradling the phone between her shoulder and her ear. She allowed her tongue to form questions her mind hadn't formulated yet; she was tired. She turned onto her side and moved the phone onto the other ear to give the left ear time to cool off. When her ears started burning she knew they’d been talking too long. The meaning of x is not Algebra, Patrick!1 year ago in Flash Fiction & Vignettes More Like This
“Are you still there?” she asked, eyes open staring out into the darkness. Her brain molded furniture from memory, traces of a life lived in the daylight, but her eyes saw nothing but the faint etchings of a truth – and they wanted something more. She grasped for it; “Patrick?”
“’m here” came the reply. It fizzled through the sound of agitated wiring and she relaxed into her pillow at the sound. “You went quiet on me” she noted with an amused tone. “I was surprised that you expected me to know the meaning of life off the top of my head” he challenged w

as they stream down my face,
but wiping my eyes dry won't take away
the pain you've caused me.
The tears are only evidence
of what you've destroyed within me,
my broken heart bleeding openly
for you to see.
Nothing can mend the pain I'm feeling.
Not a touch,
not a smile,
not a kiss,
not a word.
I look into your eyes,
into the soul of someone who's torn me apart,
and for the first time,
you can't save me.
I push your hand away,
my gaze still locked on yours
and I see it,
That's what I see in your eyes.
You know just as I know,
that you can't take away the pain
as easily as you caused it.
You can't come through one final time
and put a smile back onto my saddened face
because this time
you were the one to bring tears to my eyes,
instead of making them disappear.
I never thought you'd be on the other side,
never thought you'd be the one to cause the pain
when for so long
you were the only one who knew how to cure it.

Something inside just skipped
The ground fell from beneath me
And I fell into the sea
My world dimmed and numbness set in
Water choked me and I forgot how to swim
My body got cold
And death had a hold
But you were there underneath me
You were where you needed to be
Your breath kept me warm
You made me glad I was born
I felt your heart beat
And finally found my feet
Maybe I'm not strong
But at least I have you to help me along
