Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit: Elves
Tolkien’s texts are notable for their abundance of characters, many of them mentioned perhaps only once, other playing very important parts in the stories. However, it is often very difficult to find any description of how those characters look, and this is what we, artists and illustrators, are usually most concerned with.
So here it is – Tolkien Illustrator’s First Aid Kit – a list of all those characters, whose physical appearance is mentioned in the texts, including The Silmarillion and The History of the Middle-earth.
To start with, the Elves. As we know, during the march from Cuiviënén t
Why you SHOULDN'T do commissions(Started as an ask.fm post (http://ask.fm/EchoBlossom123/answer/128089995369) but I think a longer entry is needed to explain my feelings on this)Why you SHOULDN'T do commissions2 months ago in Personal More Like This
I don't know if this counts as a controversial viewpoint or not, as many do seem to do commissions, but I personally don't see it as a good idea. (At least not while you're still an amateur, as I and most other artists on this site are)
As always I'm up for hearing other people's points of view and why/why they don't take commissions themselves! but I most definitely fall into the "it's not worth it" camp.
I really don't think opening commissions is worth a person's time, for a few reasons.
You can't experiment as much as you could if you were working on something for yourself. You want to ensure a good job for the commissioner, and will stick to something more comfortable. Most commissions are of 1 character, no background, default front or 3/4 pose, and I don't know about you but I don't re
Resources for StudentsSo studying art isn't super easy but there are a few things you can do to make it easier. I've taken a bunch of online courses, gotten several workshops, read a bunch of books, done a ton of life drawing, read a lot of art blogs and I think sharing some of my resources could be helpful for some of you. I have about 1K followers so there's probably at least a few of you that could benefit from this. I don't want to sound like some big-shot when talking about this, I still use these resources and learn from them daily. They should be helpful for both beginners and pros.Resources for Students8 months ago in Personal More Like This
So taking courses online is sometimes a risky thing. There are a bunch of crappy online schools, teaching bad stuff and just ripping artists off. That being said. There are a few great ones. These are a few of my favourites offering a good art education that's much much cheaper than most art schools and ateliers.

10 Tips to Improve your Digital ArtA while ago I posted some tips on how to improve your art. While that article was rather general, this one is an addition to it, focusing on digital drawing and painting – so make sure to read both.10 Tips to Improve your Digital Art7 months ago in Art Features More Like This
It's made for beginners, so it's just really basic stuff. I hope it's helpful!
1. Get a tablet
Of course there are artists who create beautiful pictures with a mouse, but trust me, drawing with a graphics tablet is more natural and a lot easier once you're used to it.
Tablets have one big advantage over mouses: Pen pressure. Depending on how hard you press the line gets thicker and darker or thinner and lighter, similar to a real pen on real paper. I'd recommend getting a small, cheap Wacom tablet to start out.
Also make sure your tablet always has the newest drivers installed! You can download them on the Wacom website.

Guide - Creating A Character Profile☆ GUIDE - CREATING A CHARACTER PROFILE ☆Guide - Creating A Character Profile2 years ago in Personal More Like This
In order to make a character your readers will believe, you first need to know him or her extremely well yourself. This guide created by Tyler Lehmann gives some useful direction on what to think to and include in character profiles for a whole rounded individual. Think carefully to each one, and ask yourself why you have chosen that answer throughout, as you want the characteristics to make sense and have connections, such as fears connected to an event in the past where that fear was born, as to give a pinpoint as to why your character feels as

12 Shades of Red12 slightly different shades of red.12 Shades of Red6 years ago in Art Features More Like This
(According to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Shades_of_red) Also note that these are not going to be exact, but only the general idea.)
Falu red or Falun red (in Swedish Falu rödfärg) is the name of a Swedish, deep red paint well known for its use on wooden cottages and barns. The paint originated from the copper mine at Falun in Dalarna, Sweden. The traditional color remains popular today due to its effectiveness in preserving wood.
Scarlet (from the Persian säqirlāt) is a bright red color with a hue that is somewhat toward the orange. It is a pure chroma on the color wheel. It is redder than vermilion. Traditionally, scarlet is the color of flame. It may also refer to the color of the blood of a living person.

Speed Drawing Tutorial, how to Film/Edit/UploadSome tips and tricks how to make a speed drawing video.Speed Drawing Tutorial, how to Film/Edit/Upload3 years ago in Personal More Like This
If you have additional tips or if you find mistakes in this guide please let me know, thank you.
(please excuse my bad english.)
1. Drawing and Filming:
Drawing and Lightsource:
Set up the place where you draw comfortable, the light should come from top(preferred) or left side of the drawing if you are right-handed. That way the area you are drawing on is not covered by the shadow of your hand. The arm of the drawing hand should show in the direction of the lightsource to make a shadow only under your arm. Shadows can cause huge brightness flickering in the time lapse.
I fix the single sheet of paper or canvas of my drawing on the table or easel or wherever to prevent the drawing from jumping around in the time lapse video. Try to make the video smooth.
Daylight as the only lightsource can cause flickering in the timelapse video.
Star's compendium of Sai Tips and Tricks [updated]EDIT: Feel free to post these to your art-blog or art tumblr!Star's compendium of Sai Tips and Tricks [updated]7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I will update this with more tricks as we go on! I've been using SAI for several years and continue to find new shortcuts. Also it bugs me when artists don't use shortcuts, so the time they spend searching for the right button is time wasted and not improving B(
Hold CTRL and click to jump to layer:
- Hold CTRL and drag to move whatever's on that layer!
- Hold CTRL and click and you will automatically jump to that layer! (Some versions of SAI uses ctrl+ shift, try it out!)
- Hold CTRL over a colored area and a little tag will appear next to your cursor that shows the name of that layer!
Go to View> New for a little viewfinder
- If you want to see what your artwork looks like, at 100% or whatever zoom you like (other than from the little navigator which is very tiny), you can set your canvas to windows

Wouldn't it be nice if we could achieve the goals that we are working towards more quickly?
The world is speeding up all around us, and thankfully we're able to speed up as well and get more of what we want in less time. Here's some tips that will help you become the artist that you want to be more quickly.
Don't make mistakes - gain experience...
When you are learning if you think too critically of your work it may cause your brain some discomfort. The brain likes to succeed so when you don't quite get the results that you were aiming for, with the wrong attitude it can cause you some distress. Instead of looking at these attempts as 'failures,' you should see them always as opportunities to grow and gain experience.
The problem with looking at a work as a 'failure' is that it won't be too long u

How to Write a Good Fan FicOr, how to write fiction in general, focused in on fan fic.How to Write a Good Fan Fic1 year ago in Personal More Like This
However, I am a Hetalia fan fiction writer for two years now, so it is more directed towards the Hetalia fandom.
So, I have never actually thought about doing this before until this past week, and I know a lot of people have done this, so you can probably find a better one than mine. Since I am finally back from hiatus, I thought this would be a good thing to do for aspiring authors or at least people who want to write better fan fics. I am by no means an excellent writer, but after about two years of writing fics, I have learned a few things that make fics better.
Okay, this is the most important rule of all. It is so, so important to spell correctly and use correct grammar because trust me, there is nothing that makes people close the tab so much more quickly than when a story is written sloppily, with little attention given to basic writing principles such as spelling gr
