Excellent Advice - A Quote From Neil Gaiman"When things get tough, this is what you should do: Make good art. I'm serious. Husband runs off with a politician -- make good art. Leg crushed and then eaten by a mutated boa constrictor -- make good art. IRS on your trail -- make good art. Cat exploded -- make good art. Someone on the Internet thinks what you're doing is stupid or evil or it's all been done before -- make good art." Exercise 17: Cast ShadowsTHIS WEEK's EXERCISE POST : THE FULL POST AND DETAILSExercise 17: Cast Shadows2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So what is a cast shadow? A cast shadow is caused from an obstruction that interferes with the direction of the light source, and that obstruction CASTS a SHADOW. The challenge is figuring out how to add values to the form of the subject matter in both lit areas and areas that fall under the cast shadow.
EXERCISE: Create 3 examples of cast shadows on different subject matters.
For this exercise, there are three examples you are to test your skill set on. You can download the practice sheet on the main page but below is an example setup.
1. The first is an animated character with 2 obstructions. You know the scene set up: When a garage door is lowering or a door is slowly being close

i have always been a huge fan of art books. in fact i would say that 99 percent of my bookshelves are filled with art books ranging from animation to fashion design and everything visual in between. it was partly why i am so excited to have produced my own book, Walking Your Octopus. one of my goals with this project was to create an art book that was also an art object and this vision guided every aspect of the book's production. as we all know ebooks are becoming more and more popular and i struggled with how my book which was a celebration of all things analog might fit into the digital space. fortunately my very creative friend eric, had the solution...Aereoscope.

The NEW Batman.A rant... so strap in...The NEW Batman.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Yesterday's events... Joss' opinion on the ending of ESB, Bradley Cooper's probable casting as the voice of Rocket Raccoon and the biggie, Ben Affleck being named the next Batman has made me realize just how absolutely insane some of you people are.
Seriously. I'm not joking. Some of you people have absolutely ZERO CLUE as to what you're talking about. But I thank you in advance for making weeding you out easier.
Let's start with Whedon and move from there.
So Joss apparently was quoted as saying that he was "appalled by the the ending of Empire because it didn't have an ending."
It didn't folks. And he was referring to being appalled as a kid. Trust me, all of you whining about this right now were too, just that "appalling" is too strong a word for some of you. At least those of you who were old enough to see these films in the theaters in their original run, which most of you weren't. You had the instant grat

This is how I was drawing when I was a teenager, something around 15-17.
Behold my weaboo phase! Yes, I was drawing animu. I never got a good grip on that style so it's all hideous.

I had no idea I was being so bitter - but when I thought about it I had to concede the point. And that made me start wondering why - Why did I feel so angry about the UK? What was my problem?
But here's the thing - Some 14 years ago I couldn't get any work. We had just had baby no.2, and I had done a run on 'Spawn: the Dark Ages', and had been suddenly replaced, along with the rest of the team on the book, because McFarlane wanted 'a change of direction'. And then there was literally no work. I went to NY to see DC and Marvel, but they had nothing. I pitched company after company, to no avail. I tried to get on illustration agency books, but was refused by all of them. I tried children's book publishers, Core Design, and other computer game companies. Nobody wanted me. Even Frank Frazetta criticized my art in his book 'Icon' - just to add insult to injury!
We ended up having to sel
SFW Commissions Open~Hi guys, I decided to finally reopen my commissions again in hopes to get my art drive back and keep myself busy.SFW Commissions Open~2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I’ve gotten some help and now all the money prices are fixed up along with the ones for points. Some prices have been raised as well. (some were raised since I keep gettin pestered to do so since it's worth more)
My strengths ( meaning also things I would prefer to draw) are ferals, anthros, MTTs,Toon Gore, humanoids (humans with creature ears, limbs etc.), humans, monsters, dragons, skulls, canines, headshots, pokemon, buggy things, sketches.
My weaknesses are females, feline like faces (mainly just domestic cats though), robots, robotic limbs(I can sometimes do these depending on how complicated), human hands and feet, rats/mice, certain action poses.
Those will be altered and others will be added as time goes on since I am still figuring out my boundaries, so you are free to ask about anything if it’s not listed.

I might have to leave it for a little while, I've been trying hard to focus on my drawing skills as much as I can. Lately I've been struggling a little bit, sure you might see the work I've done and think it's okay but it takes me waaaaay too long to come up with it. I used to be able to get a character pose drawn up in a matter of minutes but now it's taking up to an hour or two to get it right.. So it's quite a painful process sometimes.. It's only been like these recently because I had spent so much time on the digital work that my penciling has been neglected.
I've enrolled in an Advanced Drawing class that goes for 6 weeks, I'm really looking forward to it because I've never actually been taught how to draw. It'll be nice to have some guidance and may

On the Journey i go.Hey guys, so i wanted to just post up a ramble really, lol. Im going to be disappearing from the internet for a bit, im sure iw ill post things up here and there, but for the most part, i will be away. I think its time to really step my game up and learn again, so i will be on a journey learning from various artists and styles, and really pushing myself again. Its weird working in animation (and comics too im sure) but you tend to draw SOOOO much, that you grow at a RIDICULOUS rate, but because of the nature of your job and the monotony of it, there is usually little windows at a time for you to introduce some of what you learn into your system. Well, im am taking a good amount of time away from the studios right now in order to implement some of what i have learned over the last few years. I hope that you guys will take the time to do the same. its been a great lesson thus far. Anyway, that its all, if you guys have thoughts or sites or anything to share in that direction, i would lovOn the Journey i go.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
SPACE DANDY?Space Dandy is a new animated tv series By Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo). It's a pretty ground-breaking show in that it's the first japanese animated TV series with a world-wide premiere (starting in America FIRST). It's personally my favorite, 2D animated tv series airing in the states right now.SPACE DANDY?2 years ago in Personal More Like This
As a consumer of animated content on TV for decades, I (like many I'm sure) am quite used to getting quality stuff finished and packaged, so I can take things things like SD for granted. However, as a Tv animation series producer/director, I know how incredibly challenging & difficult it is to produce/direct a single episode from a hand-drawn, animated action or comedyTV series (be it 11 minutes format or 22 minutes). So watching what Watanabe and his crew are doing from a production/planning/execution standpoint is a lesson in humility for me. This is high-level stuff for a TV budget and it makes a me a little envious that the guys across the pond have i
Animosity STOP ITI've been seeing a LOT of Animosity online and at cons lately that I think is just weird. The net seems to be getting more and more toxic with negative people saying anything that comes to mind. They see something and even a "That's stupid" just strikes me as why on earth did you even take the time to WRITE that. Just think it and move on. But NOOOOOO…. Not on the net, the net is where we share our hate.Animosity STOP IT2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Really? Really people? It's now pouring out into everyday, at cons I noticed people backbiting like crazy. Why at one show I just went in for a day, I had swag, I was prepared and yes--I have fan art to sell. It wasn't my first rodeo, I've done cons before and you gotta make back money for travel and other expenses so having fan art brings in the money. Sprinkle in your own stuff and then you can start filtering out the fan stuff. This is my plan right now. The entire con another artist talked smack th

I have some "Off-white" related news for you.
Me and :icontanathe: have been working on Off-White for almost 6 years now. During this time our lives gradually changed, and we've acquired new responsibilities. I'm busy with creating a museum design for my major degree in architecture, and Kate works full time on the newest Witcher game. With all that keeping up with a regular update schedule became more and more challenging. Because we are still very committed to this project, we felt that we've been letting our readers down lately. We've decided it's time to make some changes. To keep the updates regular we've invited a new member to our team! Today we welcome :iconjessi-mei: as our new artist and writer!
Here's a few words from her:
Hey Off-White readers!
You’ve probably seen me around, especially in the comment section for the past couple of years. And for some of you more experienced, long-time readers, you’ve seen me in both of the Off-White forums as both

'I HATE that trashy Image style. Hiding bad drawing with flashy technique….'
Oh boy. I'm so tired of hearing this.
The internet nearly broke yesterday with a battle (on FaceBook) around good drawing, bad drawing, technique, bad manners, being able to take criticism or not, and whether a certain artist did or didn't deserve his success, and why we hate him, or not. It was epic.
I'm not going to go into the details. It got out of hand. My toes curled when I read all the comments. My heart sank. The entire original point of the thread was buried under a mound of vitriol which, justified or not, made me a little ashamed of my industry.
Comics are not all about good drawing. I've seen plenty of Jack Kirby anatomy that aligns to reality only in the most rudimentary sense, but we all know he was great.
The so-called Image style actually evolved at Marvel - and if
