Victim or VillainI've just started to notice how often, how ingrained, self-blame is when a person is a victim of societal circumstance. I was reading over some statistical data when I came to the summary of the article, a paragraph, that really struck me:Victim or Villain2 years ago in Personal More Like This
"It is part of social and legal convention in the United States to discriminate against, ridicule, and abuse
transgender and gender non-conforming people within foundational institutions such as the family, schools,
the workplace and health care settings, every day. Instead of recognizing that the moral failure lies in society's
unwillingness to embrace different gender identities and expressions, society blames transgender and gender
non-conforming people for bringing the discrimination and violence on themselves." - The National Transgender Discrimination Survey
It made me stop and think: do I harbor feelings of self blame? Two strips of Material Girl came to mind: when Noah has the stormy premonition and says "I was so sure...

For those of you who may be unaware, back in January a friend of mine killed herself. She was an internet friend but a damn good one and one who I miss more than I want to admit.
Chelsea was one who supported my writing from the moment I joined Fanfiction.net. She introduced me to Markiplier, who continues to be one of my biggest inspirations to this day. She would constantly assure me that I mattered in this world. Chelsea was a good fucking person and she didn't deserve the shit she went through. Near the end of her life, we'd lost touch a bit and didn't talk as much as we used to. My iPod's facetime stopped working so that was useless, and I just kind of stopped knowing what to say to her so I opted for nothing at all most weeks.
I regret that so much. If I had messaged her more, would she still be here? If I had told her how much she meant to me more than I did, would she have swallowed those pills? Maybe. I don't know.
The legends were true?!Geek culture has many myths and legends, ranging from fabled disks and cassettes containing unreleased sequels of beloved games to Easter Eggs found only within the code of early versions of certain titles. The legends were true?!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
The most well known of these legends, the Holy Grail, the Ark of the Covenant, The Excalibur of Geek mythology, is that of the lost E.T. Cartridges – arguably the worst video game in history - buried somewhere in the New Mexico desert.
Now, they’ve been hiding unwanted stuff out in the deserts of America as far back as 1923. When filming finished on Cecil B. DeMille’s The Ten Commandments, they worked out it’d be cheaper to just bury the set than dismantle it. This lent the E.T. Cart legend a little credibility, but even I was skeptical of anything ever being found….
….my word, Indy! My word!
BatmathI enjoyed the Nolanverse Batman films a lot, but I've just run the numbers:Batmath2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Bruce trained for 7 years (Alfred mentions his absence in Batman Begins) and he sulked for 8 years between Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises. Between that, and including the short time in Dark Knight Rises in which he wore the cowl, Nolanverse Bruce was only Batman for about a year, tops (Joker's line "Let's rewind a year" tells us this).
One. F**king. Year.
"Caped Crusader" the Nolanverse Batman is not.
He is "Bat Temp".
Dead End TechnologyIt’s not often that hard to predict what will be the next big thing. Thanks to the internet, if you keep your ear to the ground, you’ll get a heads up of what’s around the corner. All you have to do is ask “how will that idea/concept impact my daily life?” and you’ll be able to work out if it has a future or not.Dead End Technology1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Google bought Boston Dynamics a little while back. Their robotic technology has clear applications, both industrial and domestic (though they’ll want to make that stuff look a little less underwear-soilingly scary for the latter), so this is a good corporate move.
It’s been all over the news that Facebook has “pulled a Google” and purchased Oculus Rift, which, in contrast to the Boston Dynamics acquisition, has me scratching my head. We knew 20 years ago that this was dead end tech. The practical applications of wearing a bucket on your head are extremely limited. It’s right up there with motion control. If it w

I am so bored with the standard aesthetic of RPGs.
Swords, sorcery, European environments.
I’m sure that my weariness of these visuals stems from the fact I live in England, and that I grew up playing amid the ruins that scatter the borderlands of the North East. Ancient mounds, the remnants of Hadrian’s wall, fallen abbeys and frontier fortifications; because I see all that in REAL LIFE, I have no desire to wander digital versions.
Fable 2 and 3 are exceptions. Those are clearly fantasy versions of England, but they nod to different periods in history. 16th and 17th century rather than 11th and 12th. Flintlocks over chainmail. It adds something new.
I never bothered to finish Skyrim, but I’ve played Fallout 3 and New Vegas a dozen times, because the latter games are, to British eyes, a more exotic world. They are just as strange and foreign to me as a land l
DC puss out. While at my local comic-book emporium, I had a quick leaf through Harley Quinn #0 to check out the winning page from DC’s recent talent search.DC puss out.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It didn’t do much to dampen the disdain I harbour for the big-name comic companies.
For a start, I’m not sure how that page was selected as the cream of the crop. Bravo to the artist for being selected, sure, but there were far more dynamic, lively examples I saw posted here on DA, and I'm genuinely surprised that none of them were chosen. The page selected feels just as stiff, stagnant, sterile and devoid of life as much of the other stuff DC discharges onto the shelves (which might have been why they ran with it).
The main gripe I have, though, is that they changed the final panel.
For those that (somehow) missed the whoo-haa that the whole talent search kicked off: the script DC provided to their would-be artists called for illustrations depicting the titular Harley trying to off herself in a series of absurd ways: holding

People pay hundreds for the latest iPhone, which does a ton of things on top of being a phone, and which is why I DON'T OWN ONE!
I carry a phone because I might need to make a call.
Don't think that I'm some sort of Luddite that takes offence at all the bells and whistles they bolt onto the little boxes. I'm not. I just have no use for them, and so, I don't want to pay for them.
I can go into my local phone emporium and pick up a device that is a phone and only a phone for £19.99 (or even less!). No camera, no internet access, just a crappy little green screen that displays a number.
It's a phone, nothing more.
Which brings me to the next generation of consoles.
As far back as I have desired them, they have cost around the £100 – £200 mark at launch, even when they started doing things they didn't need to, like play DVDs/Blue

Naruto and Hinata: Taoist Legacy
Where did it come from?
Where does it go?
And what does this have to do with Hinata?
The origins of the Byakugan in the Naruto storyline remain shrouded in mystery. According to Kakashi, the Byakugan is said to have predated the Sharingan, but there just exist too few details to give any accurate guess to the true origins of the Byakugan within Naruto.
The Byakugan, conceptually, originates with the largely Chinese philosophy/religion of Taoism.
Taoism and Budhism historically have separate origins but date back to very similar time periods (with some estimates having Taoism predate Budhism by a few hundred years - though the Indian concept of Budhism would not enter Ch

Literally every single day (since the day I made them) I get 1-10 notes or comments about someone stealing, tracing, recolouring, selling my work here or somewhere else. So naturally, I fucking hate those things. I probably would've done them a lot more if I didn't have to deal with art theft twenty times a day.
To those of you who have been informing me of these thefts from time to time, I really appreciate it as always. Without people like you I wouldn't even be able to track down, or even KNOW about the people stealing them. So really, you have my deepest thanks and gratitude.
NOW to get things straight. I'm tired of going through these art theft pictures and reading comments about how, "He gave me permission to make it a base" or "He doesn't care". WRONG, I do care and will report you without hesitation if I see it.

Rockstar do it again......regrettably.Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare was fun. Lots of fun. It was also, obviously, a total fluke, because the main Red Dead game was irritating, LA Noir felt dull and empty, GTA 4 was a chore to play and now GTA 5 is loaded with even more trademark Rockstar rage-quit-inducing pleasantries.Rockstar do it again......regrettably.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
With that track record, you'd think a person of (at least) average intelligence, like me, would have steered clear of the game.
I did not.
Lets see what I've done in San Andreas today: I've not shot any Elk because of the insta-death mountain lions, I've driven off a foot high cliff and exploded in a manner that would suggest the chassis of crappy rust bucket I was driving had been crafted from uranium, I've been knocked over in the road and then continuously mown down by other vehicles until dead, I've watched the player-character casually start walking around a vehicle to enter it despite the urgency implied by both my hammering of the control pad and the sh*tloa

UPDATE 8 - As of Saturday, November 17, 2012, we are at 125,125 points, with only 34,875 points left to go! I was able to purchase 2,000 points a moment ago to put directly into the pool myself. My original intent was to get 8,000, but I ended up working less than I expected this week and was unable to, but as of my next paycheck (in two weeks), I will be able to purchase 8,000! That will leave us with 26,875. And after TimberClipse's AWESOME point doubler, like the one that helped out and did so amazingly earlier in the year, that will be another 8,000, leaving us with only 18,875! And his doubler is already halfway full with much thanks to rainylake for immediately putting 2,000 points in

I believe that Minecraft is the future of massive multiplayer games, and I'm surprised that none of the big developers/publishers have cottoned onto it yet.
They look at Minecraft and think its success is down to its business model, or to its blocky, retro charm.
It's down to the fact that you get out of it what you put into it.
With a MMORPG, there are pre-scripted quests. With Minecraft, you set the quests yourself or others.
User created content is the key. All you have to do is provide the players with the tools to build.
There are two types of gamer: wall builders and wall breakers.
Wall builders are the ones that spend an age in an RTS game getting their base just right. They play SimCity and act as Dungeon Master during an RPG.
Wall breakers are the type to follow the mission brief. They get set a quest and they follow it. They're the Call of Duty crowd and they're never more happy than when

The Real Pros:
I have met some of the best artists in my industry and by and large they were humble and well adjusted people. These folks are the types who are approachable and don't spend time basting in their own glory, and can be spoken to like humans and not pompous self inflated stars.
You pros who look down on people just because you think you have a talent that happens to be praiseworthy in this century, keep in mind you still meet death like all of us, you still walk the planet with waste within you like all of us, you can have your talent taken from you in one quick accident. Here but by God's Grace, your talent is not guaranteed for tomorrow, neither is your life nor health, so show some humility, it all can be taken from you in heartbeat. You're an entertainer, and everyone's equally important whether a baker or accountant since we all contribute to society. Having status is a test to show if you're going to be a

However will we cope?
I think the British media look at genuinely dangerous parts of the world with envy. It must be boring for them working in the UK. We have no dangerous animals (the newspapers have been trying to cause panic over the False Widow. The least scary spider in the world), you're never more than a few miles from a road, so there is no wilderness to get lost in (you have to be dumb enough to climb a Scottish mountain in mid-winter in order to die in the "wild"), there are no active fault lines to cause major earthquakes or tsunami, you can drink the tap water without worry and our weather doesn't require special preparations to deal with, only causing trouble for people devoid of common sense.
The only thing "dangerous" here are the people.
Broken ToysI love Team Fortress 2, especially the visual style, so when they started releasing toys of the characters, I had to start a collection.Broken Toys1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I had planned to nab the whole team, but I may reconsider in light of THIS:
What happened? Well, I dared try to bend the thing's knee to put it in a pose where it could stand freely, as I had done with the Pyro figure I bought earlier, and the Heavy. Nary an ounce of pressure was applied and SNAP.
It was intended to bend, I can see that from the exposed hinge, but the thing's made from such cheap plastic, and the hinge's connecting "pin" so thin, that it couldn't take anyone touching it.
Not sure what to do about this. Can't really send it back to the vendor I bought it from as it was in perfect condition on purchase.
Hey, Valve? You out there? Is your console going to be this sturdy?
