Today is an incredibly exciting day!!!
I feel incredibly lucky that on my birthday, I can finally reveal a long-awaited dream come true with all of you.

McCall's Patterns reached out to me last year to see if I would like to design some patterns for them. (Still reeling over this sentence, btw.) I had a meeting and lovely tour of their offices, and then got to work. My ideas were overflowing, but I knew exactly which patterns I wanted to design first...

We're proud to present "Yaya Han's Ultimate Bodysuit Pattern" as the first finished collaboration between McCall's Patterns and me.
It's a pattern we are sorely missing in the cosplay world - I know from having to alter and draft my own bodysuit patterns for many years. This patterns will make it easy for cosplayers (and everyone else) to tailor a bodysuit that will fit them like a glove, and use it as a base for thousands of costume ideas.
The Ultimate Bodysuit patten is numbered M7217 and will be released as a McCall's costume pattern.

I made the bodysuit in the photos with M7217 and it was a breeze. I also used this patterns for the base bodysuit of my Aion Hyperion Gunslinger costume!

The second patterns McCall's and I finished is "Yaya's original Peacock costume"! I was so honored that they liked the costume enough to make a pattern out of it. The envelope for the Peacock will contain patterns and instructions for the bodice, skirt, skirt train/tail, bolero and hat!! This pattern can be used for a variety of costumes, wedding gowns, formal wear and more. The Peacock pattern is numbered M7218, and will also be released as a McCall's costume pattern.

Of course I made the costume in the photos.

Now, were can you get the patterns?? MCCallsPatterns will have a booth at C2E2, April 24th - 26th, in Chicago! It's booth number 549, and you can buy both of these patterns there, alongside a large selection of sewing patterns!

The Yaya Han cosplay patterns will be $20 each, HOWEVER, if you show them this post on your phone and tell them the discount code "YayaHanCosplayPatterns", you will receive each pattern for $10!! So save the photos, mark down the code word, and try out my new patterns!
(I sadly won't be at C2E2 this year, as I'm being forced to go on vacation in Japan. For realz! Forced! I wanted to be there for the patterns!)

For those not attending C2E2 either, both patterns will be available worldwide via McCall's global distribution channels, in July.

And now I can tell you that this collaboration makes me more happy than any other project I have been a part of, because I learned how to sew partially by reading McCall's patterns. I used them for my first, awful, costumes, 15 years ago!! To be able to work with them to create patterns now is an absolute dream come true. I have many more ideas of patterns we cosplayers need/should have, and I can't wait to share them with you!

Secret Wars: Star Wars

Wed Mar 11, 2015, 4:21 PM
Img-00 by techgnotic

Coming this summer to a comic store (or digital tablet) near you is Marvel Comic’s big blockbuster publishing event! We’ve been told from their editorial team that it is the crossover event to end all crossover events.

We certainly hope so!

When Robert Oppenheimer famously said “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds” after the atomic bomb was used on Japan bringing World War II to a dramatic close, he was remarking on his part in the creation of the atom bomb. It wasn’t what he had in mind when he created it, but very few of us can control how our ideas are utilized by higher powers-that-be.

In 1984, Jim Shooter, then Marvel Comic’s Editor-In-Chief, created the first company-wide crossover, Secret Wars. This event had the core characters of the Marvel universe transported to another world to face their most deadly foes in mortal combat. This initial crossover would be a huge event that would have long-lasting ramifications for the company’s main characters. It was bold, audacious and it was incredibly successful. Therein lies the rub.

DC Comics has just copied Marvel and begun creating their own “Earth-shattering” events. Changes were made to both company’s lines that brought in more fans but lost some of their older fans. With every event the companies get to make a cash grab using dozens of variant covers.

Over twenty years later the industry has serious event fatigue.

Retailers and fans alike are tired of being milked like cows for cash and have been making themselves heard by dropping titles.

This summer Marvel is going to revive every crossover they have ever done into one last event (hopefully) and while it promises to be a big one, they could just go one step further.

The Marvel Universe was created to be a unique place the characters would inhabit and while Jack Kirby would create many other realities, none of them were in any way a duplicate of the Marvel Universe. But that doesn’t stop someone like Alan Moore.

Alan Moore and Alan Davis created the first true Marvel multiverse on their Captain Britain run.

Captain Britain had been killed along with his universe and the two Alans would bring him back. This would be the first time we heard the reference to the current Marvel universe as being numbered 616. The multiverse was endless allowing for endless variations of the their characters. Someone dies, bring him back by using an alternate universe version of the character.

With that in mind and the fact that Disney recently brought another huge franchise from the director George Lucas, we have to wonder which of these universes holds the Star Wars characters and even more excitingly, which of them would be the one where the characters from both universes can exist in the same place.

Well, most of us in the community realize that if you think of something you can bet that someone else in the community has already thought of it. Tony Stark, the Iron Stormtrooper? Yeah, that’s been done. Nick Fury Agent of the Jedi? Done, too. Darth Doom, Dark Lord of the Sith? Yup!

If this is Marvel finally waking up to the fact that “events” are pushing away more and more fans every year, and this is definitely the last one, then adding a Star Wars/Marvel mash-up universe to the mix might even get this jaded fan to pick it up as part of the sendoff.

Your Thoughts

  1. How many of you would like to see a Star Wars/Marvel mash-up or should these universes forever be kept apart? What is your reasoning?
  2. Do you look forward to these comic crossover events or are they pricing themselves out of your range and making you resentful at being manipulated?
  3. Anyone up for the challenge of doing your own Marvel/Star Wars mash-up character and posting them in the comments below?

I have to admit i haven't cared much for the New 52 Wonder Woman that has been provided by Brian Azzarello, even if it has been hailed as an excellent run by many. Diana herself has been... okay, bland but okay. Then again, it shouldn't be that hard to get Wonder Woman reasonably accurate in feel ( anymore than Batman or Superman ).

In fact i would argue the only reason this story run was so seemingly successful and lauded was due to Cliff Changs artwork, that apparently blinded readers to the writing. Had the artwork been provided by Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld, or an artist of similar cloth, i don't think the title would have been given the same level of praise, and it would have received more criticism.

Among the disappointing things done were the alterations to Diana's origin. In the old DC Universe, Diana was formed from clay by her mother Hippolyte ( or Hippolyta ) and given life by several of the Primary Greek Goddesses ( and the minor God Hermes, so it is worth noting she wasn't devoid of having a male involved in her creation/birth ). This origin is vaguely comparable to the greek myth of Galatea ( a perfect, artificial woman given life by the Goddess Aphrodite ), but by and large it gave her an interestingly unique quality. It was mythic.

But with the New 52 version, this was jettisoned in favour of revealing that the 'Clay Myth' was just that, a myth, a lie told to Diana to hide that Diana had a father, and that the one who sired her was no less than the King of the Greek Gods, Zeus. It still cracks me up that Diana, the Iconic female hero of DC, now derives all of her might from a male god, from Zeus himself, who Diana's mother Hippolyta apparently just couldn't resist after having a drawn out combat against him...

Now having a Greek God or Demi-god as her actual father is an idea that has been toyed with before. Yet toying with the idea with possible or unexpected choices is one thing, actually having Zeus as her father feels... lazy, and given Zeus's generally questionable behavior with women in the myths, i'm amazed so few Wonder Woman fans have complained. If DC were so set on giving Diana a father they would have been better off with Hippolyta falling in love with a non powered but heroic/decent man, be it Steve Trevor Senior, Alfred the -not yet- Butler, or whoever.

In the end, having her as the daughter of Zeus robs Diana of her own myth, making her much more in line with a typical demi-god hero that  also reduces her stature while pretending to elevate her, and that is a pity.

Cosplay Friday: The Justice League

Fri Mar 27, 2015, 10:48 AM
Img-og by techgnotic

The next couple of years promises to be full of comic book superheroes no matter where your allegiance falls in the DC/Marvel divide.

Following in The Avengers’ big screen footsteps, the Justice League of America (JLA) is finally getting its own live-action movie, even though the Justice League came along way before The Avengers were even born. A quick stroll down comic book lane reveals how the JLA got its start and unintentionally lead to some of Marvel’s most successful superhero teams.

The first team of superheroes in the history of comics was the Justice Society of America (JSA) who appeared in DC Comics All Star Comics #3 in 1940.

The original team included Doctor Fate, Hour-Man, the Spectre, the Sandman, the Atom, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Hawkman. DC Comics had a rule that whenever a JSA member received his own comic book title the character would leave All Star Comics and would become an “honorary member” of the JSA. This is why already independent Batman and Superman didn’t appear in the series, being automatic honorary members even though they weren’t present for the founding of the JSA. The comic had a good run, but after WWII there was a decline in the popularity of superheroes. It seems the golden age of the superhero ended when DC opted to stop publishing more JSA adventures and rebranded the title All-Star Westerns (which didn't include a single superhero).

It wasn’t until 1979 that any explanation for the team’s disappearance after the early 1950s was provided when it was revealed in The Defeat of the Justice Society! (Adventure Comics #466) that the JSA chose to disband and retire rather than present themselves unmasked in front of the Joint Un-American Activities Committee as demanded.

The death of the JSA lead to the birth of the Justice League of America (JLA) when in the late 1950s DC Comics’ editor Julius Schwartz asked writer Gardner Fox to reinvent the JSA. Schwartz, due to the popularity of Major League Baseball’s National and American Leagues, asked Fox to change the team’s name to the Justice “League.” The JLA made its debut with a whole new team in March 1960 in The Brave and the Bold #28 and quickly gained popularity, leading to their own series which became one of DC Comics’ best-selling titles.

During a round of golf, DC publisher Jack Liebowitz bragged to Marvel owner Martin Goodman about how well the new Justice League series was selling which prompted Goodman, knowing himself how popular the JLA was becoming, to ask his editor Stan Lee to create a superhero team for Marvel. The result was the Fantastic Four. The next Marvel team to follow prompted by the Justice League’s success was The Avengers. You can thank DC comics for spawning the dawn of the superhero team — but, ironically, in Marvel Comics!

Casting rumors continue to swirl as Warner Brother’s The Justice League movie moves closer and closer to production, but no need to wait until the movie’s release in 2017 to see your fave Justice Leaguers in the flesh. Thanks to these DeviantArt superheroes you can see the full league in all their live-action glory. These cosplayers join their collective superpowers to bring you a superheroic extravaganza!

Your Thoughts

  1. Who is you favorite The Justice League character and why?
  2. What would you like to see in future editions of Cosplay Friday?

PurposeI don't know what caused
your eyes to droop
or the bottle of sleeping pills we had in the cabinet
to disappear.
Or do I know what caused the man who
killed his wife
to stab the one he swore
"I do" to.
But what I do know is the message
twisted and fitted into our brains,
that all things happen as they must,
snap and fit like zippers and buttons.
So maybe the bride,
had cheated on her beloved
or maybe she was crazy;
and he was just helping her out.
And maybe you were created
to grab my heart and break it
then mend it back together,
all to let yourself go in the end.

way, describes the tumult of being
comforted by loved ones, overwhelmed
by events, while facing the loss of a mother.

You Can't Make Him Love YouYou can't make him love you,
No matter how you try
Just how you cannot make a bird
Spread it's wings and fly.
He already told you "no",
What do you not get?
Still you ask him, even though
The answer won't be "yes".
He isn't going to "see the light"
Or abruptly change his mind.
You're just tying yourself so tight
And creating a bind.
Please just try to set him free,
You're just causing him pain.
Just step back and let him be,
'Cause love's not what you're gonna gain.

"You Can't Make Him Love You" by vamp-princess667

A poem that takes real life experiences and
manages to make them beautiful in a nostalgic way.

Touch    He could see their scars. It was just a matter of proximity. The closer he was, the more he could see. That bruise on the leg of the boy on the other side of the subway car was from a clumsy encounter with a swinging door. The faint scrape along the arm of the woman across from him was from her newly acquired black kitten. The cuts on the hip of the young woman beside him were hidden by her jeans, but as I said earlier, it was a matter of proximity. They were from a razor blade she had pried from the razor she used for shaving; he shied away from her as she crossed her arms, not wanting to feel what she had felt then. The only way to prevent this was to prevent physical contact.
This was his stop. He was halfway out the doors when he brushed arms with a stranger and felt the pain they felt as the teeth of their two-year-old sank into their big toe.

An interesting vignette based on a
concept where one might literally feel another's pain.

TraceBrown eyes gently shut and pink petal lips pulled into the hint of a smile, she’s the picture of peace. Sandy, silken hair frames her freckle-dotted face. I want to reach out, touch her, but I’m afraid she’ll break. So I leave my hands at my sides, trace over her features with my eyes.
I want to memorize every nuance, remember every detail. The particularly dark freckle under her right eye. How her bottom lip is a little bigger than the top. You can’t see them, but she has dimples, one in each cheek. When she smiles this goofy grin, wide enough to split her face, you can see the front tooth she chipped when she ran into a wall and lost the other when she was ten. The way her face scrunches when she laughs or the way her eyebrows move when she’s thinking is completely cartoon-ish. Her aversion to dresses, how far she’s gone get out of any her mother has tried to put her in, is a bit extreme (and entirely too entertaining.)

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantART community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.

Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you :+fav: the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces. we just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community and these artists.

Valentines Day Contest - LAST CALL!

Journal Entry: Tue Jan 24, 2012, 7:38 PM

I have gone through the entries and all I can say is wow.. but they are all to confused with the third person perspective which I have found has killed the themes.. so I know this is going to postpone the judging... BUT! It means that you will get a better chance at writing with a clear mind to win so! The changes is the third person thing is out and there is...

*drumroll* A week and a half extension date!

To when exactly? Scroll down and you shall see.

Also, all curent entries are allowed to be revised and rewritten and I suggest as such...

In this contest, the group name, link to the contest and category must be in artist comments! Or you might just lose a chance to participate! So don't forget!

The long awaited contest has arrived and here is the information for it: We are having, a valentines day contest! :squee:

I hope you are just as excited as I am! The theme is an interesting one, a spilt theme! We are hoping for at least 20-50 entries for each category as we are still building up the prizes! We will hopefully get a great show of enthusiasm for this!

Begins: Now.

Ends: February 14th (Valentines day) Midnight PST Extension This will now end on the 14th of March to commemorate White Day in Japan! So we are going to end this contest on the final Valentines Day.

This will end on 11th April  Midnight PST.

Group name, link to the contest and category must be in artist comments!

Split:

Prose Category Prompt: Submit here: written-imagination.deviantart…

"Love is the emblem of eternity; it confounds all notion of time; effaces all memory of a beginning, all fear of an end." - Madame De Stael

Poetry Category Prompt: Submit here: written-imagination.deviantart…

"At the touch of love, everyone becomes a poet." - Plato

Here is the twist though!: You must write from a third person's viewpoint. Let me clear this up.

Third person's viewpoint is trough the eyes of someone not directly in the relationship you are describing so for example: "Susan and Mark made out furiously." or "Dan and Lili were kissing so long it made me uncomfortable." would be from third person's viewpoint.

Note: A third party never knows what others think or feel.

The trick is to bring out the passion without describing directly how they feel because as a third person you can't. You have to describe it really well so that the passion shows through. Like seeing a couple so in love on the street that you know they're in love even if you don't know them. An outsiders view of things and will be judged on the passion that is brought out through this, though not exclusively.

Exceptions may be made for fantastic pieces that cannot be passed up.

Though that is the main point.

The Third person perspective is out! *HEARS MANY SQUEE*

I also know some of you are groaning at such a delay but I really want these prizes to be given deservingly after you all have actually been given a proper chance!

Prizes: Updated!
