Disney vs Lucas ArtsIf ever you bring up Disney in a conversation, people immediately recite tired old issues with the company that haven't been true for a long time. For example, complaining about the excess of half-assed sequels. That was part of Michael Eisner's regime. When he left the studio the quality Disney was producing suddenly skyrocketed considerably. Likewise the excessive merchandising and branding of Disney related products has also ceased to be as all-consuming now that Eisner is gone. In fact, a lot of the main issues people had with Disney during the 90's and early 2000's was a result of Eisner.Disney vs Lucas Arts2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Since Eisner left, the Disney studio has done a REMARKABLE job in clearing their name of many of the atrocities they had committed during his regime. They promptly turned the animation department around and have even begun doing 2-D animated films again after Eisner said "no." Granted, at the moment 2-D is still in hiatus, but the situation isn't as dire as it use to be and there's still promise
Save 2D animation with Steampunk?A Disney animation pal, James Lopez, has brought together a group of killer Disney veterans to create a 2D short called 'Hullabaloo'. It's currently set up as a short but with your support & donations, they can make more shorts, expand it into a web-series, a TV show or even a full-length movie. Hullabaloo is set in a Steampunk universe, stars female protagonists and action galore. The good news is that they are about to reach their financial goal on Indiegogo, but if they EXCEED it, it means they can make a second (and third) short! Once you see the trailer his has up, I promise, you will be blown away! Its just like a good Disney film because its the same people making it- but this one is for them, not the mouse! Go support, even the smallest donation helps show your support! (And I want them to stay busy, I might have a secret project coming up where I can use them when they are finished- gotta keep the band together!)Save 2D animation with Steampunk?1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Believe In YourselfJust some friendly artistic advice from someone who has been drawing for nearly four decades...Believe In Yourself2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Believe it yourself. When you sit down to draw, believe that the outcome will be successful. Failure at drawing comes from not trying hard enough, not working hard enough, and not believing that you can get the job done. Success comes from working hard, learning from past mistakes, and believing that you can and will rises to the occasion. If you are confident that you will do well each time you sit down to draw, you will do better work than the time before. You might not always get things right, or be satisfied with your outcomes, but you will be moving forward as an artist. Repetition. It's not the only way to improve, but it's the only GUARANTEED way to do it. The more you draw, the better you'll get at it. The more you ink, the better you get at it. The more you color, the better you get at it. Never fear your drawing table (Wacom, etc). You aren't going to be dismantling nuc

I've been getting some requests on dA and from my facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Anthony-Holden-Art/176602949100531 about what sort of brushes I use in Photoshop. I put them online so anyone can easily download them. If you're interested, you can find them here https://sites.google.com/site/aholdenfilessite/home/photoshop-stuff/Anthony_Holden_Brushes.tpl?attredirects=0&d=1
EDIT: the .tpl file is for CS6. Some folks have been having issues with usability. If anyone has an idea for a work around, let me know!
EDIT #2: Here is a link to a .zip file containing the same .tpl, since it has been suggested to me that this may help https://sites.google.com/site/aholdenfilessite/home/photoshop-stuff/Anthony_Holden_Brushes.zip?attredirects=0

Been so busy once again, not much time to reply to notes or comments. Mea Culpa.
Still, I can't help but take a very small break to share a link to this first look at one of the life size puppets for the live show of How To Train Your Dragon.
These are the same crew who did the Dinosaur show a few years back.
Beautiful puppet work: great details, and just the sheer size of it...I want to see it for realz!!
This is just a first look. Can't wait to see what they've done with the other dragons!

NEW PERCY JACKSON NEWS FROM RICK RIORDAN!!!(copying this from my journal because everyone needs to know!!)NEW PERCY JACKSON NEWS FROM RICK RIORDAN!!!3 years ago in Personal More Like This
OMG uncle rick confirmed that he wrote a kane and percy crossover!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO EXCITED!!!! :iconcryingrainbowsplz:
So, yes, it's true. As announced today in Publisher's Weekly Children's Bookshelf, I have written a crossover story featuring Carter Kane and Percy Jackson. The story is called "The Son of Sobek."
This is something fans have been asking me to do for years, but why this story and why now? My publisher Disney-Hyperion was looking for something fun to add to the paperback version of The Serpent's Shadow, which comes out May 7 -- something to encourage folks who haven't yet tried the Kane Chronicles to pick up the series. I decided what the heck. Let's throw Carter and Percy together in a Greek-Egyptian dilemma and see what happens. The result was SO much fun to write.
If you buy the paperback version of Serpent's Shadow on May 7, "The Son of Sobek" will be at the end of the book, no extra charge.
Okay, that's it.Jinbo71, I'm getting sick of this. I really am. When I block someone, they should go away. But I see that you obviously want my attention, and congratulations you're going to get it. The back story? Ever since I've made my Breadwinners review, he's been going around like a spastic toddler taking whatever means he can to insult me, both directly or indirectly. I wanted to let this guy slide, but, okay a rule of thumb: if I block you and you're still causing me problems, you get this. Let's start here:Okay, that's it.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
He's admitted in the comments that I'm the one he's referring to. He even put a comment on my journal entry saying that I was having a hard time making the breadwinners script because it was so horrible. He linked to an article "Has Breadwinners been a Breadwinner" that I don't care about, saying "look at this and be enlightened" like anyone who didn't realize Breadwinners was God's gift to animation

What Would Elsa Look Like in TeenTitansI'm not wondering... I've already figured it upWhat Would Elsa Look Like in TeenTitans1 year ago in Personal More Like This
For some reason, this consumed me... I had to do it.
And yes, Anna's on the way. I just may not get to her for a while.
Elsa's outfit was redesigned with the TT fashion formula in mind.
Elsa's original dress just wasn't simple enough. In design, it was close, sort of, but it was far far too sparkly.
To be clear; I love Elsa's dress in the movie, sparkly is the only real reason I like Winx Club. But for TT's style, it's plain not suitable.
I was thinking a lot of things with this... Starfire and Kitten's prom dresses for one.
For another, the way other TT character's clothes "flowed" into each piece, as applied to how Elsa's dress met certain emotional needs. I was going to have snow-dots in the cape here, but realized that was going too far. We can have the cape, made of ice, display snowflake designs upon closer, microscope-esk, analysis. Such as, if anyone ever studies her (like the Tita
Portfolio tipsAfter my last update I've gotten notes from people wanting more in regards to portfolios. Again (to cover my ass), these are only my opinions. There aren't any absolute truths for a good portfolio when shopping around for editors. Essentially a good portfolio is one that shows off your abilities in the best ways possible and hopefully helps you make an impression on an editor.Portfolio tips7 years ago in Personal More Like This
1. The less the better.
Editors are bogged down at cons looking through a lot of portfolios. When they open up your portfolio they'll size you up in about 5 seconds on your first couple of pages: good or bad. I suggest only 5 pages of sequential art showing a CONNECTED story of some kind, not bits and pieces of things you did over the years and certainly NO PIN-UPS. Having a ton of crap in your portfolio won't change their mind but it will waste their time. 5 pages is more than enough for them to see whether you're ready or not (in their

Animation Job FAQ
Q: How can I get a job in animation?
The absolute best thing you can do to get into animation as a career is to go to art school. Not only will you learn how to draw and how to SEE, you will meet people, students and teachers alike, who will give you new perspectives and will likely be the sources of your future jobs. (My first job came from one of my teachers.)
There are several schools that have fantastic animation programs that cover all facets of the atr form. Schools like the one I attended, CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS, will teach you animation (2D and 3D,) character design, storyboarding, bac
