10 years?!? wow!!!haha wow, i just noticed that I've officially been on deviantart for 10 years now. gotta draw something to commemorate that soon! i'm not gonna lie, it means quite a lot to me. even though i didn't know it at the time, putting my artwork online and joining art communities like deviantart has become the foundation of pretty much my entire LIFE as i know it now. i mean i started uploading my artwork to this site for fun, just to get in touch with other artists and gain some exposure, and now it is my career. i firmly believe that my fanbase here on deviantart and the things i've learned here have EVERYTHING to do with me being able to work as a freelance artist. i discovered so many inspiring and great artists through this site. the reason i chose the Utrecht School of the Arts as my college was because i followed Bakenius and loved his work; when i didn't like the school i was attending at the time, i contacted him through deviantart notes and he advised me to check out his school10 years?!? wow!!!2 years ago in Personal More Like This

Oh my GOD this weekend was amazing. Before I dive into anything else, lemme thank a bunch of people. I'd like to thank all of the wonderful friends that made it out to Detroit this past weekend to have such a fun time I know we'll never forget. I'd like to thank the staff of Youmacon for being so accommodating and having this event to bring us all together in the first place. I'd like to thank everyone who came to my "Flashstravaganza" panel on Saturday to check out the premiere of TOME Episode 05, as well as those who bought our first piece of merchandise for the show, the Nylocke "WHOOSH!" t-shirt, which apparently did very well!
I've returned home and am trying to jump right back into work. Last night we released TOME Episode 05 on Newgrounds and thus far the response has been

Reproduction Work: An Essay Made for Learnin'One thing I've noticed about all plagiarists: the first thing they do when caught is to claim ignorance. "I didn't mean to infringe!" "I love your art!" Ugh. That word.
Take a seat next to teacher here and let's have us a talk.
That word is not some magic coverall for trying to pass someone else's work off as your own--and you ARE trying to pass it off as your own if you're changing signatures, names, etc. with no mention as to the original creator or characters you're appropriating. We have a word for that shit...say it with me now...plaaaagiaaarismmmm. Good job.
But, Teacher! Isn't copying a way to learn from other people?
The short answer is: Sure it is! Just don't be a douchebag about it.
I was fortunate enough in my education to be forced to take a Master's Class. For 20 weeks we did nothing but reproduce classical works by artists like Da Vinci and Michelangelo in charcoal and pastel--and I hated eve

Lines and Stanzas
• Do you have a clear rationale for breaking each of your lines where they currently end?
• Do your linebreaks generate suspense and surprise, making the reader want to find out what will happen in the next line?
• Are you employing a combination of end-stopped and enjambed lines?
• If you have more than one stanza, do your line groupings increase the impact of your poem’s style and subject matter?
Meter and Rhythm
• Does your poem have a discernible rhythm – either a scannable metrical pattern, or, if your poem is in free verse, a distinctive cadence that distinguishes it from prose?
The Music of Poetry
• If your poem rhymes, are the rhymes original, intelligent, and necessary?
• Have you fully considered alternatives to perfect end rhymes, such as slant, internal, and eye rhymes?
• Whether or not you are using rhyme, are you

More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career PathHey everyone, thanks for the info on San Francisco for those who live in / near there. It's a big thing for me to still be thinking about, so I'll definitely be coming in for a visit before I make any final decisions.More Critical Thoughts on Art School + Career Path3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Elsewhere, I've been meaning to do a short rant dealing with how I feel retrospectively having gone to art school. I've talked about having gone before, and I've given some advice about choosing a school that's right for you should you choose to go. But you know, having been out for a couple years now, there are a few glaring problems I see not just from the school I attended, but apparently from many schools nationwide. And this deals with offering students a clear path of study for the often specialized career they are looking to get into. Areas of art such as (concept) design, animation, comics/storyboarding/sequential, full-time freelance, and all-over jobs related to working in industry-level professional positions, or in a teamwork-oriented studio setting. Second, I know I went missing for about two months but I'm hoping that things will start slowing down again so I can work on comics and other art-related things. I have a bunch of tm Comics lined up since... 4 months ago... and I'm hoping to actually work on them soon (Along with StupidFox, of course). But mainly during these past two months, I've been doing a lot of sketching and going back on working with old mediums.
Warning: This is a Beginning of a Rant
Recently, I've realized that I do not have as much time to work on art as I did one year ago. And I l

Challenge 4: Yellow - TOP 5Dear all friends,Challenge 4: Yellow - TOP 53 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Sorry for late result but we have more entries this time, and even more amazing works .
With a lot of entries therefore it took me while to choose top 5. This time, so many good entries with great concepts. It's really hard for me to pick 5 only.
I don't pick the top 5 base on drawing skills only but also the concept of their entries. But there were more than 20 entries I want to pick as winners :C. But don't worry, we will have more challenges in future.
I think there are too many good entries, top 5 are not enough actually. We call it top 5 but actually I think there are at least top 20 or more, since this time, so so many lovely entries . How about giving out top 10 in next challenge (when we have enough point again, yes). People will get 100 points each, less points but more people who will get it. How do you think about it? Because I think actually this is not a contest, it's just a little challenge for fun and a reason to draw more, practice mo

There are a lot of people who haven't heard my music. They've probably heard my name in some way, like with the whole Columbine thing [Manson's music was blamed for inspiring the Columbine High School massacre], but I don't expect them to understand me – I'm not that arrogant.
As a kid I had buck teeth and braces and acne. I hated what I saw. I'm still not comfortable, but that's why I change and adapt the way I look.
My body is a place where drugs and alcohol have made germs afraid to live. I have no health problems to speak of, touch wood.
My girlfriend Lindsay's twin just had a baby and I've started to think that maybe I wouldn't mind passing my demented genius on to some small thing who can set fire and breathe profanity.
The advantage of the internet is that it has taken away the charade of politics. China has heard of democracy and people know about certain concepts they wouldn't have previously.

#SixWordStories Showcase: June 18th - July 2ndA type of Flash Fiction, six word stories are (very) short stories with an exact word count: six words. SixWordStories is the place where, alongside quality, quantity really does matter. Though these stories are so brief in length, they can be as profound, if not more, than the prose and poetry you see and read every day, partly because six word stories can tell us so much and yet contain so little.#SixWordStories Showcase: June 18th - July 2nd3 years ago in Literature Features More Like This

Poetry Workshop: Rhythm + RhymePoetry is an art, just as much as music, oil painting, sculpting, dance, ceramics, textile art, screen printing, graphic design, and composing (and so on, of course). Therefore, it requires real skill, and not merely emotion and a proper grasp of the language one is writing it in. It may seem to you that the poetry you read in high school English class is either incredibly complex and unfathomable, or simple and seemingly meaningless. But we are going to look at only two small tricks of the trade which will help you be a better writer and/or appreciator of poetry.Poetry Workshop: Rhythm + Rhyme3 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
Of course, to fully appreciate poetry, other tricks are helpful, such as an understanding of the basic literary devices (personification, symbolism, alliteration, etc.), and the different sorts of poetic form (such as free verse, fixed form, blank verse, and all their sub-categories). But today we begin with two: rhythm and rhyme.
Let me be clear: rhythm is not exclusive to poetry. It is seen in also in pr

Who Cares About the Literature Community?A few days ago we had a chat to discuss community issues and solutions (see the original journal for details). Huge thanks to everyone who came and raised awesome points!Who Cares About the Literature Community?2 years ago in Literature Features More Like This
It took 45 minutes for the volume of talk to max out Sta.sh Writer's character limit and this chat went for two more hours, so I'm just going to summarize the key discussion points, starting with big actionables for CRLiterature and for the community.
I've put the chat stuff lower down as it's denser: the outside bullet is the issue, and the inside bullet is possible solutions (not necessarily in order, each point is really a response to the original issue). There is a lot to think about in there, but feel free to pick and choose the issues you care most about.
Sorry for leaving a lot of stuff out, but I hope you guys are too busy figuring out how best to act on what we discussed to pay too much attention

No one expected the house Hiccup Horrendous Haddock was sorted into.
He was from a Viking Clan after all. Viking's were honest, loyal, proud, brave, united, and loud, of course. They could swing hard and swig harder. Vikings were Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs and to be sorted into any other house proved you lacked True Vikings Spirit.
Vikings didn't go into Ravenclaw. That was a place for Greeks and scholars and those pompous Englishmen.
Vikings certainly didn't go into Slytherin. A Roman would be more suited for such a place of backward dealings, craftiness and lies.
Hiccup could handle the shock of his classmates (a Horrendous Haddock? In Slytherin? How could he ever expect to take over as chief?) and he could handle his father's disappointment in those short-worded letters. Hiccup was always a bit of a loner and the Slytherin lifestyle catered to that just fine. Everyone in Slytherin minded their own business more or
