She's sitting at the table, the hours getting later.
He was supposed to be here.
She's sure he would've called.
She waits a little longer; there's no one in the driveway.
No one says they've seen him.
Why, is there something wrong?
She looks back to the window.
Suddenly, the phone rings.
A voice says something's happened, that she should come right now.
Her mind goes to December
She thinks of when he asked her
He bent down on his knees first
And he said:
I sat at the dining table wondering where the hell Soul was. It was getting late; the sun had long set and it was getting to be about midnight. "Dammit, Soul...you said you'd be home from work by eight...why didn't you call me if you were gonna be late?" I took the telephone and dialed for Tsubaki. My closest friend picked up on the second ring.
"Hey, Tsubaki-chan. Have you seen Soul? Did he go out with Blackstar or something?" I had a hint of desperation in my throat.
I couldn't tell

Waiting in the shadows of the alley, Matt cocked his feet up on the dash and lit another cigarette, watching for the tip to burn before inhaling. Bitter smoke clouded his lungs, flooding his nostrils as he blew two streams and tapped ash out the window. The specks nearly hit one of the black boots parked by his car, and he lazily glanced toward it, catching the dirty look being thrown his way by the owner, who was dressed head to toe in black. Black helmet and visor, black leather racing suit, thick, durable gloves. Even his soul seemed black, tainted by years of darkness and sins of the worst kind. Not that the redhead was one to judge. If anyone was going to hell in a hand basket, it was him. “Think they’ll throw me a party?”
“What?” Pushing up his visor, Mello looked at him with pale, aquamarine eyes. They were dilated, and, as usual, Matt suspected he was riding the high of a plan ready to be executed, A plan that was probably doomed to fail, but eve a

Percy looked up, confused. No one had said that (like they meant it, Clarrisse and Crypto always said they would, but never did) since the battle against Kronos several years ago. Percy spotted Nico, running towards him, a look of terror, confusion, and anger, clear on his face.

"Um, Nico, what are you talking about, the only mortal girl I've ever talked to was Rachel. And why in the world would I bring them here? And... wait a minute, WHAT?!" Percy asked. "Want us? What in Hades does that mean?"

You sat on a bed in a sterile white room. You watched as the rain fell in heavy waves. Little rain drops slid down the window next to the bed. Everything looked grey.
You clenched your fists, wrinkling the blanket underneath. You had been here for three weeks. It had been raining for the past four days. Almost as if the sky was mourning.
"Come on ________-chan!" Your best friend, Yuki held out the bowl of soup. "You have to eat something!"
You shook your head, not taking your eyes off the rain outside. "I'm not hungry."
You heard her sigh and felt bad. You shouldn't take your frustration out on her. Watching the silvery rain, you heard her walk out. She would come back tomorrow and the day after that. However long it took for you to die here.
A sharp pain shot through your head and a wave of dizziness hit. The leukemia wasn't getting any better. Your mother had said 'Things have to get worse b
Contest Submission: Zelink KidZelda and Link both watched from the base of a deku tree as their little son, now aged two, was running around after the fairies that fluttered about his head. The light cast by the ethereal creatures reflected off of his deep golden locks, messy and unkempt as a child's hair would be. Kail turned, and his sky blue eyes lit up as he beheld his father. It was times like these that reminded Zelda of the striking resemblance he bore to Link. She could only imagine what he would look like as he grew in the years to come. "Papa!" he cried gleefully, running towards his father, arms outstretched. He launched himself at Link, who took the impact with as much grace as he could, laughing freely.
Link stood, and brought the child up to his shoulders, so that Kail was now higher up. The two year old shrieked with joy: he loved it when his father

He recalled the smoke, thicker than creamy cake icing, a sharp taste he had fancied for so long- until that night. The worst of all was his undeniable humanity. How imperfect he was! Once he had though, in his smokey cloud, that the low burn of the cigarette poison made him perfect and whole. All else was bound to fail. But it had fai

A small girl, no older than six, sat with her mother and father by the pond in the middle of the Death City Park.
Frogs croaked from the top of water lilies as they hopped from one to another. Dragonflies and butterflies flew about, gliding from lily pad-to-lily pad, flower-to-flower. Birds chirped and sang to their visitors from atop the high trees in the park; the sun peaking through its branches and leaves.
The girl smiled and pointed at a butterfly resting on a nearby flower. She, a bit un-swiftly, ran over to the flower, scaring the butterfly away in the process. She ran after it as it flew around the park and eventually flew too high for her to keep up, so she gave up. When she stopped she realized she was a great deal away from her parents. She glanced around and couldn't find them, but only found a small figure sitting against one o

It was just her, in her uniform and light green helmet covering her hair, and Mr. Stark in his expensive suit, driving across the desert soil.
There were two hefty cars, one behind her and another in front, but somehow she thought there should have been more security.
The vehicle had no air conditioning, so she had the window down to keep them both somewhat cool.
The warm desert air blowing through the car wasn't nearly as refreshing as fully functional AC, but she didn't care much. She was used to being uncomfortable.
It was silent for a few minutes, just the sound of the tires on the dirt, and the occasional clinking of the ice in Mr. Stark's glass.
He took a sip of his drink then looked at ___, his driver. "I feel like you're driving me to a court marital."
She stayed silent, focused on the road ahead.
"This is crazy, what did I do?"
She took a deep breath but again said nothing. She prefered to remain focused and business like while she was on duty.

How cold is cold?
She stared out the ice-laced window, as if waiting for an answer. It was the middle of the night, that time when you just knew that people were asleep. Even if the sleep was fitful, or caught up in that immature state of REM, you still just knew. Knew that you were the only one playing the part of an insomniac. Or perhaps, flirting with the likes of insomnia. Either way, the deafening stillness throbbed, and you just knew that you were alone in the world of reality. No dreams sending your witty childhood pleasures into an orgasm, no nightmares indoctrinating your senses with their oh so believable propaganda. Just the company of reality, potent, dense, and silent.
Shyly, with reasonless caution, Lenalee touched the window, the tip of her finger giving birth to a succulent blot of heat as her body transfused its own into the window's lifelessly cold glass. She let her finger slide down, down, down,

Warning: A few bad words.
In all of the fairy tales I have read, the heroine always gets her happy ending.
So, where’s mine?
Where is my prince, my knight in shining armor, my hero?
If he has not come for me in the past years, when will he come?
Will anyone save me?
In my house, there are several rules, but one of them is the most important.
Avoid Father when he is drunk.
When he is heavily intoxicated, he will not hold back, and come at you brutally, even if you’re a relative.
I learned that the hard way.
I lay on my bed, burrowed deep beneath the blankets, trembling in fear as Father’s footsteps approached my bedroom door. He was indeed drunk; you can tell from his uneven pace of footsteps, and his heavy breathing. There was thump on the spot near the wall. Father had crashed into there, and stayed there for several moments, while I was waiting, just waiting, to see if he will beat me tonight.
