Need faces? We've already had "Need references?" and "Need textures?", time for something else. This actually is about references again, but about these more specified ones. Emotions. How many times have you wondered why is that the faces you draw look as empty as dead? Depicting moods can be a very hard task. Try sketching yourself (yes, a mirror would be a nice thing to have in this case), pull faces at diffrent angles, change light. And take a look at these below. No More Excuses Submit Your Writing To These Journals
Many of us — especially writers — find ourselves buried beneath a growing pile of books we’ve been meaning to read but haven’t been able to find the time. More depressing is the even longer list of book titles we know we need to read. The pile gets higher, the list gets longer every day. There’s always another seminal classic we haven’t gotten around to. It

Photomanipulation-Related Submission FAQsHello everyone,Photomanipulation-Related Submission FAQs3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Sometimes with the flood of information these days, it becomes really easy to lose track of the basics of what you can and cannot do and what is and is not required for submission. I thought I would put together some Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the Photomanipulation Community. Many of these answers are also relevant to the rest of dA.
I hope this is useful as we move forward with PE: Photomanip Month!
Does my artwork need a mature tag?
deviantART defines mature content as "Mature content is considered to be anything which contains nudity, excessive violence, blood, gore, or any other potentially upsetting or offensive material" and suggests that images that are controversial, such as religion and politics, may also be considered "mature." But, the definition of "mature" is more broad than that. See :faq220:
So what does this mean for YOUR specific artwork? The FAQs also explain that: :faq554:
Need references?Although drawing and painting "from life" is way much more effective and efficient than drawing from photos (I'll be writting a separate journal about this soon, no worries), you simply can't have a person to model for you every time you want to create something. And there are situations when you don't exactly know how to place that bloody hand or if the foot is drawn correctly. Similiar issues can happen with architecture, perspective... with everything you draw. Then, when you look for help, you may stumble upon Stock gallery and you find awesome things. Remember about crediting the used stock directly!Need references?3 years ago in Art Features More Like This

TWR Interviews: On Writing
Together with our Mentorship Project, we'll be releasing a series of interviews with experienced writers and members of our community. They will all have a different focus, according to the parts of the Project they are paired with.
This being the first article, it will contain some general advice on writing. It will be updated as more deviants contribute to it, so keep an eye out!
The deviants who so kindly shared their views with us for this article are:

The Internet Archive is a massive digital library that stores all sorts of material in the public domain, from music and movies to images, webpages and nearly three million books. All of this is open-source and available to the general public free of charge. The books documented below cover all sorts of subjects from different eras, from anatomy to portraiture, fashion to architecture, from the works of Leonardo Da Vinci to the letters of Vincent van Gogh.
And this is only scratching the surface! If you head over to the Archive and search for whatever subjects catches your interest most you can find much, much more. Just select "Texts" in the search box at the top of the page.

You don't need me to email prints-permissions anymore! For prints outside of DA, please ask first. And read my FAQs for other important info.
Q: Can I make a print/t-shirt/mousepad/dartboard using your stock?
A: Yes, absolutely. You no longer need my individual permission. I have given all DeviantArtists permission to use my stock in any and all DA prints.
Once you have created an piece of art using my stock (and I don't mean just changing the tones or adding a filter) that image is YOUR original artwork. More about Blooms !!!As you have noticed I got some Blooms going recently and they become very very popular So it happens I'm in a spring mood and feel like being showered with flowers - time to shed the heavy skin clothing into light and fragrant. Got amazing comments on the blooms as well - from dreamy, in my dreams full of magic to I wish they grew in my garden, can you make some prints and even could you make the Blooms into 3d-sculpturesMore about Blooms !!!4 years ago in Personal More Like This
All ideas and suggestions are very welcome - on short time notice I did added some prints & also a brand new calendar (with Blooms only). You can always add it to your wish list (so you don't forget the blooms when Christmas comes) or you can get it even right now, still 10 solid months left, and afterwards you can get the singular month pages to use as prints (I do that - good price for 12 artworks).

Learning to draw with Loomis: art book featureIf you want to become a better artist and you find that your own "How to draw" books, or the tutorials on the internet are lacking in scope, then this article is for you. I'm going to talk to you about some of the best books on making art that have ever been written - and that's not an exaggeration.Learning to draw with Loomis: art book feature3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
These books were written around the WWII-era by a man called William Andrew Loomis. He was a very accomplished and widely published artist at the time, but what he's currently more well-known for is a series of art books he created during that time. These books have stood the test of time and their contents are still commonly used and recommended to art students of a wide range of skill levels, and if you're looking to improve your drawing skills, particulary faces and the human body, these books are a good place to start.
The major strength of his books is that they're not a step-by-step guide or tutorial on how to draw a specific picture, portrait or pose. Many art books fall into this ca
Shared info.Hey artist.Shared info.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Yeah, you. I have a question. Do you want to be a professional artist? Really? Are you sure?
OK, I will share what I have learned as I worm my way into the professional artist world.
1: Get good. Pretty obvious right? But it is important. And to be good you have to be bad. For a long time. And that is true for all of us. Even your favorite artist had a period he/she sucked. So don't rush it. Just do art. Draw, paint, sculpt, whatever drives you. The more you do it the faster you clear the bad out. So create.
2: Get out there. Seriously. No one is going to show up on your doorstep and beg you to work on their project. (well, it's doubtful anyone will) Get online. Have a deviant art page. A Facebook page. An online portfolio. Get on other art forums. Really, networking is how you get the foot in the door. A lot of times it's who you know, not what you know.
3: And by network, I don't just mean shove your art in the face of people. Comment on their posts, fav things, if you

EDANIEL'S COUNTDOWN (DAY 23) AND A PSA!Thanks for the intro, scribbly cartoon version of Edaniel!EDANIEL'S COUNTDOWN (DAY 23) AND A PSA!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Friends (and shamwows), I wanted to talk to you today about something very important. Maybe not earthquake or collapse-of-the-stock-market important, but relatively important for a given value of "important." It's kind of long, but ferrets are mentioned at the end, as well as party hats, so just take five minutes to read it please!
So in the course of this Kickstarter for the Bizenghast video game beginning, we've been covered by a few places online...not very many big places, just a few mentions here and there on various blogs. Anime News Network was kind enough to mention us on their site just recently:
Which was really terrific of them, since we're not exactly on the same radar as most of the st
BZG Game and FB!So whaddya know, the Bizenghast game kickstarter didn't exactly meet its goal! But you know what? That's OK! Not just because we now have outsider interest and some contacts to talk to about getting it made anyhow, without KS funding, but because we got to see just how MUCH Bizenghast means to everyone!BZG Game and FB!1 year ago in Personal More Like This
We raised 50 GRAND, an enormous sum for a video game on Kickstarter that isn't well-known already! Most successful Kickstarter video games only raise 20 grand or less! We DOUBLED that amount! And that's an amazing thing! More than that, I got letters from new fans, people who had never heard of the series until this campaign, who read about it on the sites that promoted the campaign and later went to buy the series for themselves...and really loved it! A whole new group of happy fans were made just by this campaign. And the fans that already exist? Well, we learned just how generous and dedicated you guys can really be!&
