Similar Deviations
Hello folks! So this month is Flash, Animation and Flash month for the ArtHistoryProject.

So me and SqueakyToybox have been discussing about the idea of having a joint contest! We struggled for a while to find a good theme that would apply well across these mediums. So then we thought deviantART is full of members across the world. Even myself I'm from the UK and SqueakyToybox is from Australia so we're literally halfway across the world from each other.

So we thought a good theme to set you all is:

Connecting People

We would like you to create a piece of work using animation, video or Flash and we will award prizes for each gallery! So we will have a prize for a winner and runner up for film/animation and the same for Flash.

You have until the end of this month, February 28th to send all your work in and we'll announce winners shortly after! Now we appreciate that's not exactly a lot of production time for this sort of work. So our advice is to keep it short but sweet, we want to see you all being creative with your ideas! BUT if you do have the time to create an epic masterpiece though we won't stop you!

Here's a bit of inspiration for you all! ;)

Film/Animation entries:

Firstly don't forget these handy FAQs!

:bulletblue: Can be in any film or animation category, but please make sure you upload your video to the appropriate one!
:bulletblue: Note kingmancheng with a link to your film/animation deviation!

Flash entries:

:bulletblue: Must be created in Adobe Flash.
:bulletblue: Can be in any flash category (Animations, Games, Interactive etc)
:bulletblue: There are no set limits - let your mind run loose!
:bulletblue: Note SqueakyToybox with a link to your Flash deviation!

Winning prize per category:

12 month premium membership.

Runners up prize per category:

6 month premium membership.

Art on the Rise
DeviantART is a bustling and active community, and with the high volume of artwork submitted on any given day, it can be easy to miss something. In fact, it's common for artwork to go viral across the Web or get a spike of traffic days, months, or even years after it was originally submitted.

Our new “What’s Hot” browse mode surfaces artwork that’s receiving a recent increase in exposure, regardless of when it was submitted.

A New Way To Surface Artwork
We often see artwork gain a lot of attention across the Web (after being shared on blogs, social sites, etc.), but by the time this recognition occurs, our search engines don't consider it when displaying recently "Popular" deviations. The new "What’s Hot" mode is built to celebrate these surges of exposure.

What's Hot vs. Popular
The content of the “What’s Hot” page uses an algorithm that reflects what artwork has recently garnered attention, regardless of when it was submitted to deviantART. Unlike the "Popular" browse modes, "What’s Hot" ignores submission dates, and artwork that was submitted a year ago can receive enough attention to be "Hot" once again.

The algorithm that powers What's Hot is still being tweaked, so it's possible that we may make changes to it to improve the results.

What’s Hot is About Now
Due to the vast amount of activity on deviantART, the "What’s Hot" page can frequently change the artwork displayed, serving you examples of what's hot on the Web at any given time.

Try it out and see What’s Hot.

Witches of East End Contest Winners

Fri Aug 1, 2014, 12:23 PM

In our Witches of East End Contest, we challenged you to illustrate a scene or element from one of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tales: "The Black Cat," "The Tell-Tale Heart," or "The Raven." The Creative team behind the Witches of East End have hand-picked three winners, with the top winner earning a spot for their artwork in the upcoming season finale of Witches of East End! Thank you to everyone who entered, and congratulations, winners!

Nevermore by AngelaRizza

Judges' Comments

This is our favorite. It's in the color palette and tone of the Beauchamp house and would be very easy to fit in. It also has great subtext for Asgard as well as Poe. Totally love it!

AngelaRizza has won

  • Artwork used in The Witches of East End Season 2 Finale
  • $1,500 USD
  • 1 Year Premium Membership
  • 8,000 dA Points
Edgar Allan Poe - The Black Cat by AlexanderLevett

Judges' Comments

We love the darkness of this piece and how much it reminded us of Aunt Wendy, while still tying into the Poe theme. You can feel from this art that the cat truly has a story to tell beyond its shadow!

  • $1,000 USD
  • 6 month premium membership
  • 4,000 dA points
The Tell-Tale Heart

Judges' Comments

This piece has a very haunting, strong, and dark emotion that relates both to Witches of East End and Edgar Allen Poe. The aspects of the room (the staircase, chair, etc.) combined with the power of the heart make us feel as if this portrait could come to life!

jonsmith512 has won

  • $500 USD
  • 6 month Premium Membership
  • 4,000 dA Points

Fella's Film Contest!

Sat Jan 5, 2013, 6:46 AM

It's not long to go until the deadline for Fella's Film Contest! If you'd like to submit your film creations, remember that although the contest began on 5th January, you are welcome to submit films which were made BEFORE that date too. So if you have awesome film in your gallery that's 3 minutes long or less, you're welcome to submit it now! Here's all the original info for the contest...

Hello Everyone!
Fella would like to invite you to be a part of a new contest, one that looks at a medium that is often overlooked on deviantART, Film.

Since before the 1900s film has been a part of people's lives. Today, feature films are created with huge budgets in mass of $200 Million+. But, often times short films, which do not get seen as much in the United States (but are more readily available in some other countries) are some of the most impressive films.

We would like to invite you to make a short film. All the details are below, so get on it!

Submission of film on dA

deviantART has certain specifications in order to submit films here. Please make sure you understand those requirements as they are also requirements for this contest.
FAQ #831: Why can't just anyone submit film?
FAQ #842: How do I become a submitting member of the film community?

:bulletblue: The film should be 3 minutes or less
:bulletblue: The film should be an artistic film (or address an issue to do with art if you'd prefer a more documentary style)
:bulletblue: You MUST be accepted into the film community in order to submit (per dA rules). Please read about that requirement above
:bulletblue: If you choose to use audio in your film, it MUST be your own or you must have permission to use it FAQ #852: Where can I find music for my films?
:bulletblue: You may use anything to film it, though it must be moving (a compilation of photographs will not work in this case)

Submissions and Deadline

:bulletgreen: Submissions open January 5, 2013 and close on February 5, 2013 at 11:59:59 PM PDT
:bulletgreen:Submit items to THIS FOLDER

Winner Receives:
1 Year Premium Membership
dA pro Camera Bag

2 Honorable Mentions Receive:
6 Month Premium
Choice of One (1) devWEAR t-shirt or Camera Strap

If you have any questions, please comment below and they will be answered as quickly as possible.

1. Art is Personal

Every day, daily deviations are featured, artist interviews are posted, and countless journals of thumbnails published.  Every single day, community members, volunteers and staff, all come together and share in a love of art. It doesn't always go well and sometimes a piece of artwork I adore, strikes the wrong chord with someone. However, regardless of the message received the artwork achieved the goal of becoming personal and striking an emotion and there are no rules that state this emotion should always be happy and fluffy. I'm personally inspired by a different kind of image, one that challenges my feelings and ideals and sometimes, ones that make me uncomfortable. It was 1995, at the Guggenheim in New York City, that I stumbled across the work of Joel- Peter Witkin.  It was his work that inspired me to pick up a camera but to say that his work is globally appealing, would not be valid.  For me, it was the beginning of a great journey that would eventually lead me to this community.  For others, I imagine they would rather not view his work, as its controversial and uncomfortable for them.

As an artist, my art is very personal.  Every image I create tells a story and what I've learned is that even when I feel the intent or message is obvious, it might be completely lost on someone else.  Does that make them stupid? not at all, it just means that my art spoke to them differently and that happens for a number of reasons. It could be about what they were feeling that day or it could be speaking to something that happened in their past or it could very well be the paragon of their greatest fear and while it is my artwork and my intention, there is nothing wrong with someone else seeing something completely different.

Every day I look through comments on articles or Daily Deviations and I'm always amazed by how vastly different the opinions are.  Some people love it and others absolutely hate it, some feel it's about one thing while another is on a completely different track.  The point is that these feelings are all valid and, assuming the commenter has shared their feelings respectfully, there's nothing wrong with that.

If a piece of artwork manages to elicit an emotion - be it positive or negative - in my opinion, it has more than earned it's place.  If you feel differently, that's okay.  No one will react to one piece of artwork the same way.  In fact, you could probably go back through you favourites gallery and look at selections you made years ago, and find those pieces may not make you feel the same way about them as they did at the time.

Conversely, if your piece of artwork manages to accumulate a wealth of negativity,  remember the silver lining - Your art made people feel -  Then pat yourself on the back and go create your next masterpiece.

Art is a personal journey of mind, body and soul - both to create and to experience and we'd all do better as a community to consider that.

Feel free to share your favourite artists or pieces of artwork in the comments below :) I'd love to see the variety of tastes and styles that exist in our community!
