A day of doing nothingHey Ryceballs. yesterday marked the day that I did absolutely nothing. I gota admit, the last 2 weeks has been one of my most crazy weeks of the year, there were just tooooo many things going on at the same time that has affected my emotional state. It was like an emotional roller coaster that just didn't end. Not just bad things don't get me wrong, but good things too. And being a guy who try to take as little rest as possible, I came to a point where I just got totally burnt out. I was just exhausted and tired and just felt extremely depressed. It has affected my judgement and logical thinking and it even shows in my polls to be honest, I don't know if people realise but sometimes the topic of the polls and quality of my artworks are affected by what's going on in my life.. but sometimes I throw in a few odd ball polls in there to mix it up so you guys don't think I am personally going through stress, so yeah 'poo flavoured icecream' isnt a thing from experience don't worry! I also d
Difference between selling Art and selling MeatGreetings Ryceballs. Today I am gonna be talking about the differences between selling art and selling meat.Difference between selling Art and selling Meat2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It is absolutely fascinating how different the two can be! :iconyoudontsayplz: ... Well first of all, an artist likes their work to be appreciated and let the audience see for themselves whether they want to buy their artwork or not. While a butcher (ESPECIALLY ASIAN ONES LIKE THE ONE IN THE ARTWORK) only cares about selling the meat and making the profit, they have no sentimental feelings towards what they are selling, because if they do then there won't be any meat to sell right? One of the main rule of a butcher is to have no emotional attachment towards the animals, because they know sooner or later the animal needs to be chopped up. Well what about artists? Well they put their blood, sweat and tears into their artwork to make it as pretty as possible, all in hopes that the audiences would enjoy their art as much as the artist enjoy making them. NOW here's the thing thoug
FML. The Super Mario Galaxy StoryYou guys like story yeah? Let uncle Ry tell you a story, there's a lesson to learn here kids. Pay attention. I wanna talk about this now because last week was my birthday and it reminded me of this story, its related to a birthday gift. The gift was Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii. This story happened a few years ago.FML. The Super Mario Galaxy Story2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is a picture of me playing the Nintendo Wii, I love my Wii. Had lots of great times on it playing games like Smash Brothers and Mario Kart and Twilight Princess, and a game I really loved called Super Mario Galaxy. The story takes place around 2009? A couple of years after the Wii came out. So one day a friend of mine Matt messaged me telling me he got a Wii, I thought great, about time he got a Wii. So I congratulated him, then he asked the question. :I He asked whether he can borrow some games and I was like 'HMMMMMMMM SHIT'. Well Matt is a nice guy, pretty honest and pretty generous. I usually am pretty generous too but when it comes to games, I hate lending it out
Alleyway IncidentHiya Ryceballs. I left out something on my previous journal, something I kinda wanted to talk about but was a bit scared to... But I have decided that maybe its better to get it off my chest. This is a true story and it happened two weeks ago while I was in Melbourne for Armageddon Expo, it was a sunday night, I had a long day selling artworks and I was back in the hotel room chilling, at around 10pm I got hungry and realised I don't have much to eat, I didn't wanna call room service because I wasn't sure if food is still available that late. So knowing the 24/7 grocery store is just a block away, I decided to head out to buy a cup noodle or something. It was pretty dark outside with a bit of rain as well, much to my annoyance, but I was really really hungry. Now the proper way to get to the grocery store is to walk around the block, OR I can take a shortcut and go through the alleyway.... I tend to always walk around the block as I didn't wanna get mugged, if Batman has taught me anytAlleyway Incident2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Art is my Sword and ShieldHi Ryceballs! Today I just wanna share with you guys stories about how art has affected my life in a positive way, how it protected me as well as how it made me become a more confident man as you see today, this applied very heavily especially during my school years.Art is my Sword and Shield2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This is a photo of me when I was at school. I wasn't the best looking fella and wasn't very smart either, all I did was play Pokemon and daydream, actually I was pretty much setting myself up for great humiliation and constant bullying with what I do lol. But one thing kept my head above water, I used to draw... a LOT. I used to draw in my little pink diary as well as even drawing in my homework. I just really loved.. to draw. And you know what? I gained a lot of respect for that. I wasn't one of those popular kids at school but I actually got along with ALL the stereotype groups, I got along with the popular guys, the nerds, the hot girls, the Hongkies, the Korean breakdancers, the wannabe gangsters, I even got alo
That art thief SOB in the Artist AlleyOk here it is, the long awaited journal about that art thief guy at Animania a few weeks back, I promised I will write about it and here it is. I thought a lot about whether I should write about this because if its just a random art thief then I really don't mind dissing his grass.. but unfortunately that S.O.B also happens to be the brother of a High School friend of mine... :icontableflipplz:That art thief SOB in the Artist Alley2 years ago in Personal More Like This
This whole thing occurred in an anime convention that has been going downhill since a few years back, every year it gets worse and worse, to the point that I am now calling it Emptimania. It is no secret that the management is terrible, and that includes making sure that there are no bootleg stores around.... I don't know if they are just ignorant that there are bootleg stores there, or whether they dont give a duck because hey they get money from people getting a table. So anyway I was at the artist alley selling my things like usual, then a couple of tables down I noticed a guy, he looked fami
Exploring Art 61: Facing FailureThis is a continuation of my last post, about always succeeding and why that's not always the face we should present. When I posted that, I was in the middle of a risk that I knew I had a small chance of succeeding at. But I posted regardless of my chances, because if I did fail, I wanted the chance to discuss it with you all.Exploring Art 61: Facing Failure4 months ago in Personal More Like This
So. My work was submitted to a museum at the end of last month, in the hopes of joining their longest running exhibit. On April 2nd, I found out that I had failed, and I was not accepted into the exhibit.
I went through the full flood of emotions, crushing failure, hopelessness, certainty that my work is just a hack and I really shouldn't do art anymore. Failure always seems to bring out the worst in me, the certainty that I will always fail because I am not good enough. I didn't write a post immediately on finding out, because I wanted to really experience the full range of emotions I feel, not just the initial sting of depression. I gave myself that first day t

Protips2# Few tips to improve your drawing skills:Protips2# Few tips to improve your drawing skills:4 months ago in Personal More Like This
After my first article about How to price your art, you asked me few tips to improve your drawing skills and productivity. So I made a selection of some of my favorite exercices and advice. I hope this will be helpful for you!
A Daily sketch routine:
We are all stressed by our busy life, and it's sometimes hard to find some time for sketching. You know, you don't need to sketch during all the day to improve your skills efficiently. The most important is to be constant in your effort. Take at least 20 min per day for sketching. This could be during your break, during your lunch , in the public transportation, or when you are at home... Find a moment for you, don't pressurize you, and just draw !
Don't copy without understanding what you are copying:
Before sketching in a Disney / Manga / Marvel/ or whate

The Three problems with how we learn art: pt.3I've been thinking about how and why we learn to draw for a few years now. I started self-analazing my own drawing and character design thought process when I began writing my first art instruction book, "Creating Characters with Personality". It was harder than I thought to verbalize how I've learned and how I process drawing. This has led me to start looking back at my artistic life and how I learned art. What made me learn the most? What drove me to draw and stick with it? What led to others I knew as a child to stop drawing? I think I'm ready to present some of those thoughts here on DA and hear what you think. This is part 2 of three in a series. I'm not sure where this is leading, but step one is my establishing an online art instruction school called Taught ByA PRO (http://www.taughtbyapro.com) that will (in phase one) concenThe Three problems with how we learn art: pt.32 years ago in Personal More Like This

Exploring Art 59: Treating yourself rightHey guys.Exploring Art 59: Treating yourself right5 months ago in Personal More Like This
So, a few months ago I asked you all to tell me what you thought about your art. There were a few people who were happy about their art, but the overwhelming majority felt a sense of disappointment, frustration, upset. They were unhappy with their work.
That's a hard thing to feel, to be unhappy with the thing that you do out of love. I've felt that before so I know how crushing it can be and how hard it can be to pick yourself up and continue trying. One thing I noticed, when I feel that way, is that it's often born out of a lack of direction, and a lack of understanding of what I've done right in the past. It's so easy to see all the wrong choices you've made, we're practically hardwired to go 'oh god that was so awful'. The problem is, how can your artistic career (be it writing or drawing) grow into a beautiful tree, if you don't have faith in the roots that support it?
So I'd like you all to do a little exercise. I'd like you all to take a step back into your past, and p
Psychology and HetaliaSome of you may or may not know of my interest in psychology, but if you don't, you should know that I love to research what makes different people tick!Psychology and Hetalia2 years ago in Personal More Like This
So a few weeks back, when I was reading about the 16 different personality types, I started picking out which Hetalia characters the archetypes sounded like! Call me crazy, but it ended up leading me to analyzing all the types and sorting the Hetalia characters that I'm familiar with into their respective categories.
If characters are missing off this list, it's likely because I'm not familiar enough with their personality to sort them. I would love it if you want to discuss, or perhaps even challenge, the list I've made! Even better if you have ideas about where other characters may fit.
These are the pages that I mainly used for my speculation, if you're so inclined:

I realise that there are many people out there who ain't aware of the Community, be it the contests thats happening or the charity events that are going on, or even just Deviantart News. In fact before I became a CV, even I wasn't aware of what is going on in Deviantart land, I was just in my own little dark basement drawing alone in my underwear not realising there are life outside of my cave. So to keep it simple. Here are a few groups to get your going. Getting involved with the community also gives you an extra boost in exposure to your art by the way. Its great.
:icongetdailydeviations: Is a great group to follow, as you can submit art in the group for a possible chance of getting a Daily Deviation, and a DD REALLY helps in letting people see your art. I mean look, you can be Michelangelo uploading the Sistine Chapel on Deviantart, the people who s

Copying to learnI have been asked a few times whether it's ok to copy someone's style of drawing just to practice. I must admit that I've done my share of copying when I was in high school, but I don't think there's anything wrong with it as long as you move on from just imitation to developing your own creative style. The way I see it is that when you're copying, you are trying to understand how the artist is thinking when he/she draws, and through that you learn more about what it is you are drawing and that's when you can start creating your own style. I had mentioned before that back in school, I got to the point where I could pretty much mimic Naoko Takeuchi's style and draw my own original Sailormoon fan art in it, but over time I found that it was lacking because it really wasn't 'me' coming through in the work… which lead me to explore and look into what was to become my current 'style.' Of course it didn't just come to me overnight, and it was informed by more than just Sailormoon – ratheCopying to learn2 years ago in Personal More Like This
20 Years From Now20 years from now, I'll tell my kids about my life. I'll tell them about "the old YouTubers." I'll tell them how a simple guy from Hawaii in glasses with a frohawk always made me laugh and be happy, even in my darkest days. I'll tell them how an adorable British idiot who drank too much tea made my life a better place. I'll tell them how a very fabulous Swede became #1 on YouTube and I stayed with him for years. I'll tell them about the mysterious masked-man with the sexy voice that gave me inspiration. I'll tell them how a hothothot pro singer, pianist, guitarist and Heely-er from Mississippi made my day. But I know one thing I'll always talk about. My YouTubers. My heroes. My epic gamers. The
