My 'Authentic Viking Maiden' series..
- A series I did last summer of my homemade authentic viking outfit (we founded our own viking re-enactment group last year with a few
likeminded history obsessed friends) for personal use in my own art, and decided to upload it here also, since some of you would appreciate
in particular the clothing reference of it :)

- I even made the tablet woven band at the very top edge of the apron dress myself :D
Read more about the ancient craft of tablet weaving here :pointr: [link]

For those of you not aware of the historical facts about the scandinavian viking age; the general depiction of
'fantasy inspired viking babes' - showing a lot of cleavage and skin in general - going around the web is pure fiction
( even if they do please the eye ;) )
- This is an example of the authentic historically correct clothing a viking woman would wear back then :)

Ooh and I'd appreciate a :+fav: if you like it enough to download :blowkiss:

Graphite on Cold Press Watercolor Paper (18" X 24")
11 September 2009 - 9 Hours (3 Days)

Download for the very very large image.

:frail: People seem to be more interested in how I draw than the finished work, so here is the WIPs. I draw differently each time. I sometimes draw a whole composition and build up the details, and I sometimes finish one area and go to next areas.

:frail: This will go to scrap later or be erased. I don't think this is a tutorial but I don't know where to put this. It is 18" by 24" but I cropped the image.

I used a photo from :iconstock-of-spades:.

[link to the reference photo]

[link to the finished drawing]

:frail: It is done by using an HB 0.5mm mechanical pencil. How did I get that dark with only an HB pencil? Try it on thick, heavy, and rough-textured paper and you will know :) But you have to give up smooth blending. I use smooth paper when I want to make smooth blending of the skin contrast.

:frail: How did I finish the drawing quickly? It seems there are a lot of details but they are simplified to lines and dots. If you can do hatching, it is easy. I just did hatching with an eraser just like a pencil. Notice that almost all details are just hatching lines and dots in this drawing.

Ask me a question if you have any.
