Attention NeededDD-Catalogue needs a higher folder limit!Attention Needed3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Currently deviantART imposes a limit on the number of folders/subfolders allowed in all group galleries.
Unfortunately, this means DD-Catalogue can't keep up with the number of new folders created in the main dA gallery.
We feel, as a paying supergroup, this limit should be raised.
Add this journal to your favourites to show your support against the current limit!
10 Ways to Improve the Quality of our PhotomanipsOn the "decline" of quality in the photomanipulation gallery10 Ways to Improve the Quality of our Photomanips9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I've seen a lot of polls, journals, etc. recently about the quality of the photomanipulation gallery and fears that it has declined. I have intentionally not commented, but I will address the issue here. I think our beloved community is going through a "learning phase" where we are rediscovering ourselves and our art. We have a lot-- a LOT-- of new people, and I want to wish them a warm welcome because they are critical to our vitality as a community..
In turn, a lot of our older, more experienced artists have moved on, frequently owing to time constraints due to having more commissions and freelance work.
So, saying our quality has declined is really not fair. Rather, we are in a cycle of change that happens every couple of years within our community.
It is perhaps true that we have reached a collective slump in creativity. Like inspires like, and I see the same thing over and
The Wow Effect: What Makes Great, Great? For the latter half of March through the beginning of April, the theme at we-HEART-photomanip will be, The Wow Effect. Today, I am going to present some information about what makes a great photomanipulation great. The Wow Effect: What Makes Great, Great?1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
A great photomanipulation has great composition.
Composition is the way your eye travels over the photomanipulation and where your eye rests. What is the focal point of the image? Is that an appropriate focal point? (For example, are your eyes drawn to the model's eyes/face, or her arm? ) Composition is how we capture and keep the attention of our viewers. Popular composition styles include the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Ratio, although there are certainly others.
Unrestricted Use DirectoryEDITUnrestricted Use Directory2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Just an update. I may have doubled some up but its near midnight here so Ill sort any doubles tomorrow!
Many years ago, the amazing LawrenceDeDark created the original Unrestricted Stock Directory. A place for artists to come and find a list of stock providers who offer their resources as unrestricted. This is an update on an old list (2009, eep!) <3
Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects, but it cannot be redistributed as stock. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site or in DA prints. The only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited.
1. You have to give credit.
2. You have to let the provider know.
3. You can not redistribute as a resource
Thats it, Thats as easy as Unrestricted Stock gets.
To be added to the list please NOTE me with either
Unrestricted stock account or unrestricted stock folder as the title please. This makes it easier for me.

The pen tool is an extremely useful tool that many photo manipulators use in everyone of their works. It's Most often used to cleanly cut out objects and models from their original background, and while it's not the only way to do this it's in my opinion by far the best way. You can also create vector shapes, and use the pen tool to imitate the effect of line tapering (similar to what a pen tablet does)!

As the Community Volunteer for Photomanipulation, it will be my honor over the coming months to share the community I serve with you all and to show you the vast diversity, expertise, and creativity that defines us as artists.
Tonight I wanted to share some voices of experience with you all. The individuals I have chosen to interview for this piece have all been a part dA for at least five years. They have all been leaders in the photomanipulation community by setting high standards of quality through their exquisite works, by being involved in the community, and by setting a positive example for us all to admire.

Manip Academy (thanks, cristii, for inspiration for the name) is a new photomanipulation project inspired by projecteducate. We all love to learn, and we learn best from one another. Here's our chance to share what we know.
Manip Academy is an education initiative designed to spread the knowledge and the love. It is a collaboration between CRPhotomanipulation and we-HEART-photomanip. We will share tips and tricks for photomanipulation success. It is difficult to write tutorials, but anyone can write a simple tip or describe how they achieved a specific effect.
This project will feature two weekly articles written by the community every week, on Mondays and Thursdays. This will be an ongoing project within our community, and we hope that many people will take advantage of the chance to sign up to submit one blog or even just a few sentences to help the community.

5 Tips From Me to YouTo be taken for what it is - ramblings of a weirdo. A weirdo with a heart of gold, and good intentions.5 Tips From Me to You8 months ago in Personal More Like This
Look for Inspiration Outside of Your Medium
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people only gathering inspiration from art made out of their own medium. Admiring your fellow -insert artist type here- is fine of course, but make sure to mix in a slew of other sources as well. This will help keep your art unique and fresh and help you steer away from trends.
My personal inspiration tends to come from digital and oil painters, fashion photographers, movies and my favorite: people watching.
Don't Blame Your Equipment, or Lack there Of
This has to be one of my biggest pet peeves. The artist that blames their equipment or the fact they don't have what they "need". "If I just had -this- then I would be sooo much better! ...But I don't so oh well". I can not stand this line of thought. It's pure poison. Rotting the m

This absolutely hillarious video has been "infecting" the web for some time now (and I wanted to feature it sooner, but oh well, life and such). The first time I saw it, I was laughing so hard, because many of these things, I actually do in manips - sometimes not this quickly, but I do. And it is done daily for just about any magazine cover or vip photo shoot that you get to see! This is the true part about this video. And it's the sad part, too.
Uncover the fake Beauty
As a photomanipulator, I am often amazed at what other non-photoshop (or any other graphics programme) users will accept as real without question. Especially younger ones will be influenced by this image they see day in day out and aspire to be like it. To be as fake and "perfect" as the cover girl. How can you achieve anything like that in real life? You can't. It's that simple.
All that is left is Photoshop - the real one. You don't need a fancy plug-in to make all th

Planetary Mythology Photomanipulation Competition!Mythology of the PlanetsPlanetary Mythology Photomanipulation Competition!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Welcome to the latest "dark" photomanipulation contest, supported by Community Relations here on deviantART. This contest will challenge you to think outside of the box, for you will have to not only create something, but you will need to do a bit of research and think about why you are creating it. Are you ready for a competition that is out of this world?
Before we go any further, let me clarify that PLUTO COUNTS!
What do I have to do?
Choose one of the planets (or Pluto) in our solar system, listed below. Moons or suns can be a part of the larger picture, but they do not count as your god/goddess.
Your job is to create a PHOTOMANIPULATION in which you show a myth around a planetary ruler (that is, the god or goddess after which the planets were named).
The gods/goddesses can be Greek, Roman, or other.... but they must be planetary rulers.

People keep asking me, "How can I get involved in the photomanipulation community?" Here is a guide for you to know what's going on and how you can participate. Please bookmark or favorite it so you can find it later.
Faves, Comments, and Features
You don't need us to get involved. You can comment on others' work, post features for other members, provide critiques and helpful comments, and be supportive in other ways. You can leverage your groups by posting features there for your members and helping set a positive example for the community. Let's identify underappreciated art in our community and get new artists a wider audience. Get involved; you don't have to be a CV or a community leader to make a difference!

Update Nick Stone Birthday Tribute PLEASE READ!!It took me a few day to let it all sink in but I am ready to talk and to pay my final respects to Nick aka :iconshedboy68: His birthday is August 15th which is next Friday. I want to make a journal and have everyone do an art piece dedicated to Nick with a few sentences of what you remember about him most, some encouraging words he may have said to you or just a simple farewell. I would appreciate it if EVERYONE reading this shares this journal especially in your groups and get the word out. Those who have a lot of followers your help in spreading this would be appreciated. I need to receive the entries by next Thursday as I'm sure it will take me hours to put the journal together. Please submit your entry on THIS journal and as always give proper credit. Also if you have already made a tribute piece, just post it here. Again please spread the word and thanks to everyone who chooses to participate As a community we need to lean on each right now so let's do that.Update Nick Stone Birthday Tribute PLEASE READ!!8 months ago in Personal More Like This

Disclaimer: I'm no lawyer, I do not work for deviantArt, I'm merely someone who has been doing photomanips for quite a while and has taken the time to read quite a few articles on the topic. The views expressed hereunder are mine alone. They do not reflect any "official dA opinion" nor are they to be taken as "legal advice". Furthermore, you may live in a country that hasn't signed any of the treaties that govern international copyright law, so you'd have to check with your country's national laws.
I strongly urge you to not only read the journal, but also the comments underneath it as there are a lot more examples of what you can and can't do as well as more links to information being shared by your fellow deviants!
What is Copyright?
I'll paraphrase/quote the wikipedia article on the topic for this:
"Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclus

How to: Make thumbs big in features?I get this asked a lot!How to: Make thumbs big in features?2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Back when they introduced sta.sh, I didn't really use it. Because it seemed hard to get used to. I always wrote my articles in the old way.
Then I toyed with it a little and noticed that is is something really awesome!
Not to mention that the only way to make articles and journals is through Sta.sh Writer.
So I assume not so many if you know that there is a way to make thumbs big!
That is actually pretty easy. All you have to do is add big in front of a thumb code!

List of unrestricted stock By francescamwA big thanks to :iconfrancescamw: for providing this list to the group directly from her journal. MAKE SURE TO FAV THIS!List of unrestricted stock By francescamw1 year ago in Personal More Like This
This is mostly inspired by other lists and journals around DA. It's not comprehensive-I am being a little picky about what I include. I try not to include providers who put theme restrictions on their unrestricted stocks, but some of these say "no hate or violence." I have run across a few who say "nothing immoral." But that's very subjective (I think an image of two women kissing is normal, but it's no doubt someone else's porn or immorality) and, well, restrictive.
I'll try to keep this up-to-date. I am on the lookout for more accounts to put in the "Completely Unrestricted" column. That means not one single restriction--even credit and notification, let alone commercial or thematic restrictions. So if you know of any I don't have listed, let me know.
