Art Tutorial StuffI just now (funny how the brain works) remembered that I sent :iconesda06: an e-mail back in December with some art stuff after I was like "oh yeah! Dresden Codak's creator has an awesome Tumblr with some good tutorials for you ART people who do ARTS!" but I don't think she ever posted it on here (if she did, then I guess we have a repeat).Art Tutorial Stuff3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Also, make sure you click on the last link. It's the best resource for athletic bodies I've ever seen, in the sense that I never knew there were so many body types purely among physically fit people.

You know who hates the disabled more than anyone else? Parents of disabled kids.
They hate being reminded of their sons and daughters, and what they have to go through. They're offended by portrayals of people with disorders, because they think it's a conspiracy, some dig at their and their child's struggle. Anything that can be vaguely tied back to their anguish is something they rally against.
You're not allowed to talk about them. You're not allowed to look at them. They're not allowed to join the conversation. We're not allowed to have opinions about them, and they're not allowed to have opinions at all. They're not allowed to be in our movies, our games, our books, our stories, our culture. If one of them does manage to squeak through the defenses, we will go back and scrub out any defining character flaws. All because parents with weak convictions are repulsed by the sight o

Beware the Crap FairyNo one truly knows what the Crap Fairy looks like.Beware the Crap Fairy2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Some people say she is a withered old hag, angrily telling you about all the ways you have failed. Others say she is a beautiful woman, arrogantly pointing out that you simply are not good enough. The last known encounter with her kind revealed a twisted, mud colored and misshapen ghoul that vomited when it viewed the artist's work and swore you made it ill.
Regardless of what incarnation you view.. beware the Crap Fairy when you draw. For she is full of lies and doubt, and lives off of your insecurities and uncertainties. Every time an artist says "My work is crap" another Crap Fairy gets it's wings. She finds artists, young and old, experienced and new, and each of them can become easy prey to her if they but listen to one, single whisper from her deceitful lips.
Luckily there is a simple cure. Pay her no mind. As the wise :iconsomk: said... Ignore her. She's just a bitch.

"Heil Hitler!" A dozen or so male voices pierced the before quiet room. You watched as they stood their red emblem clad arm out in salute. All around you where women, dressed fancy with their gloves and silk gowns. Of course you weren't much different. In fact you were almost the same.
You had a long, fitting red dress on, with white gloves and your hair was done beautifully by your head maid.
Currently you were at a party for higher ranking Nazi's. Most of them knew the Führer. Including your own boyfriend, Gilbert Beilschmidt.
Gilbert was a very handsome man, with pale features. Pale skin, pale hair but crimson eyes that made you have chills down your spine whenever you looked at them.
He was a wonderful person, maybe his ego was too high sometimes but he was very caring and fun. But lately, well, he'd changed. Ever since that start of the war, he had grown colder.
"Heil Hitler!" The women repeated joyously. You muttered it a little half hea

So... the community's response to DeviantArt's revamped website,
especially the new logo was, as expected, fairly polarizing.
While some members, myself included, liked/loved the new look, others weren't
particularly impressed by it and found the redesign... "unnecessary".
But who am I to judge?
All I know is that I'm a proud member of the largest online art community in the world!!
In honor of DeviantArt's controversial rebranding,
I'd like to share with you a list of 40 logos of popular brands with hidden messages behind them.

Happy 13th birthday, and thank youToday marks deviantART's 13th birthday and a handful of us -- spyed, mccann, chris, and me -- have been on this amazing journey since pretty much day one. Thirteen years ago, most of us in that handful were just teenagers, unknowingly embarking on a time in our lives that would shape us, inspire us, and be truly thought-provoking in ways we could have never imagined. Today, I find myself so fortunate to play a role in the ongoing journey that has deviantART at the forefront of solving complex problems that affect the creative community.Happy 13th birthday, and thank you2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Throughout the years, I've met incredible people at deviantMEETs, town hall meetings, and visits to new countries -- all of which have fostered relationships and changed my life. I'm extremely grateful to have talked with every deviant who has crossed my path -- even in a note, comment, or journal. The deviantART community has flourished and prospered in the past 13 years, and we're thankful for that,

The Fractal Universe:icontechgnotic:The Fractal Universe4 years ago in Personal More Like This
Is a photograph only a record, something created by a machine? Can photography ever truly be considered art? That question seems quaint and laughable these days, but if you do a little research you will find that once upon a time it was a raging debate. Thankfully a consensus has been reached that the agency of the photographer – his or her eye and critical mind – choosing the subject and manipulating the machine (the camera that is the art instrument) is what establishes photographs as potential works of art when created by an artist-photographer. Pretty basic common sense, huh? So why then is there now a debate as to whether FRACTAL ART is truly art – or just something produced by poking patterns into a computer? Isn't it just really random e-graffiti, a fibonacci button mash?
Here we go again… Hopefully it won’t take nearly a century again before fractal art is recog

Last night I cuddled in with the dog and a glass of rum and jumped onto the site, only to get dragged into a chatroom where copperrein, Astralseed and mamiffer, sparkesauthor, Pickley and I were polled, interrogated and waterboarded - in an altogether pleasant way, of course - by techgnotic and spyed about headlines for the new today page's articles this week. It was an unexpected way to spend a Saturday night, but hey, if you can't get some strange you might as well get some bizarre, right?
I have to confess that I love the new today page, both for the ability it gives us to see and experience information, and because of what the staff envision it as representing. It may be big and daunting, but it is also pretty, and packed with relevant things and wonderful art. The fact that it features Undiscovered as a section, and critiques, resonates with me for some reason as s
Apparel Collection: CMYThe most difficult part of putting a piece of art on a printed surface is making sure it translates successfully. This design came about after I created a presentation for my co-workers on color theory. A lot of studying went into the lecture, and because I was presenting to deviantART staff, I wanted to make sure everything I was saying was on point. Color theory has everything to do with association -- in other words, how the colors live next to each other on the color wheel in the visual spectrum. When looking at your screen, it takes the three colors – red, green, and blue added together on a black canvas -- to make all of the colors you are seeing. But in traditional media and print technologies, it takes three other colors starting from the white canvas to make the infinitely wide gamut of hues: cyan, magenta, and yellow. In theory, mixing the three colors (referred to collectively as “CMY”) will make black, but in most cases, it makes an organic dark grey. And then the whining school boy, with his satchel And shining morning face, creeping like snail Unwillingly to school.
And then the lover, Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad Made to his mistress' eyebrow.

-- False Flag Hatred --"Although bananas may only look like a fruit, they represent a wide variety of environmental, economic, social, and political problems. The banana trade symbolizes economic imperialism, injustices in the global trade market, and the globalization of the agricultural economy. Bananas are also number four on the list of staple crops in the world and one of the biggest profit makers in supermarkets, making them critical for economic and global food security. As one of the first tropical fruits to be exported, bananas were a cheap way to bring "the tropics" to North America and Europe. Bananas have become such a common, inexpensive grocery item that we often forget where they come from and how they got here."-- False Flag Hatred --2 years ago in Personal More Like This

FULL CIRCLE - dA meets MadefireWhen digital comics were first imagined we just had the web. It was a blank canvas, of course, and it was crying out to be scribbled all over, desperate to burst open the long-slumbering narrative modes we had all taken for granted and formed habits around.FULL CIRCLE - dA meets Madefire2 years ago in Personal More Like This
The questions were multiple:
- How long will it take to kick old habits? (To paraphrase Douglas Adams, when will people really stop mistaking the food for the plate?)
- What will these new mediums look like? What will the grammar be? Will we be participants, or passive watchers?
- How will we build them? Flash? After-effects? What?
- How do we stop the pirates if it’s a basic PDF reader?
- How will we reach people, and how will it make any money?
- Can we do it like Spotify or Pandora, and have it supported by advertising, giving everybody the content for free?
These were things Ben Wolstenholme and I were wrestling with when we first started talking about Madefire several years ago. Other pioneers had faced boldly into these

I was inspired to create this series by naikki while looking through her gallery of diverse artwork and reading through her journals which are focused on her favorite inspiring writers and thinkers. I felt certain there must be beautiful artwork in the form of portraits and tributes to these writers and their stories. I found most of naikki's choices of quotes to be inclusionary, redeeming and welcoming to any artist on their own path. Instead of just crediting naikki with the inspiration for this new series on depthRADIUS, I also invited her to provide a quote about Herman Hesse of her own to kick off this series.
