The Fractal Universe:icontechgnotic:The Fractal Universe3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Is a photograph only a record, something created by a machine? Can photography ever truly be considered art? That question seems quaint and laughable these days, but if you do a little research you will find that once upon a time it was a raging debate. Thankfully a consensus has been reached that the agency of the photographer – his or her eye and critical mind – choosing the subject and manipulating the machine (the camera that is the art instrument) is what establishes photographs as potential works of art when created by an artist-photographer. Pretty basic common sense, huh? So why then is there now a debate as to whether FRACTAL ART is truly art – or just something produced by poking patterns into a computer? Isn't it just really random e-graffiti, a fibonacci button mash?
Here we go again… Hopefully it won’t take nearly a century again before fractal art is recog

Best video resources for digital artistsLearning the theory without any practice is incredibly pointless when it comes to art. No book, no lecture and no video will ever teach you how to paint if you won't find the time for creating something yourself.Best video resources for digital artists9 months ago in Art Features More Like This
On the other hand, doing everything alone and without any instructions is the longest and hardest way of achieving anything. What's worse it doesn't guarantee you success.
Through the last couple of years I've been painting, I've learned that the best way for me to learn to paint is to copy techniques of people who know what they're doing. There's no better way doing it than watching videos with commentaries. That's why today I thought I'd share with you some great lectures, tutorials and demos I've found on youtube. Below you'll find a list of the best YT channels and samples of videos. Go and subscribe for more great vids!

Turing McCabe-patternsYou might or might not know that I've been fiddling around with Turing McCabe-patterns in the past. Well the good news is: in the present too! For those of you who don't know what this is: it's an algorithm producing nice images like this one:Turing McCabe-patterns2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
I've created an explorer utility for myself. Well, I created one for you too but it's old. I'm constantly changing mine and see what you can do with the algorithm. And I've come to a major progress I wanted to share with you.
One thing is a thing you might already know. The original algorithm initializes with a noise field. This means, the first frame is just noise and then the pattern develops. I had one thought which changed that concept a bit: why noise? The Jonathan McCabe seemed to need a field of unstructured data from where a pattern evolves through convolution. My idea was to replace that with something else. To the mathematical idea, an image is sort of unstructured too. It's man-made. Most of the time. So technically, you could use an i
Final-Transform fix for 15DHey guysFinal-Transform fix for 15D2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I know it's been some time but I'm having hell of a release going on here. So I just didn't came to check on what's wrong with the saving of final transforms. I finally made it so that I'm not there 7am to 10pm every day. This means: it's fixing time.
To provide you with an acceptable solution, I just reverted the behavior of FXes to the one of 15C. So that you at least get to use 64 bit plugins / scripts AND final xforms
Here it is: http://download.xyrus-worx.org/apophysis/apo7x-15d_hf1.zip
It's a patch so just replace the EXE files in your installation. If you didn't update yet, you can with this. In this case, you also just replace the EXE files. Remember the release notes from the original 15D package, though. It contains valuable information on how to use 64 bit plugins and compile multi-architecture plugins (32/64) from existing and new plugin code.
See you soon
Wacom Intuos 5 Touch M - ReviewWacom has just launched its new Wacom Intuos 5 product line. I just got one of these (Medium size), so I thought I'd write a small review about it, since it's the most fundamental tool for my job.Wacom Intuos 5 Touch M - Review2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's been quite a few years since my last upgrade. For the record, before that I've also used a Graphire 1 (A6), an Intuos 3 (A6), an Intuos 3 (A5 Wide SE), and a Cintiq 21UX (currently I've been using the Intuos 3 A5W).
First of all, here's the official specs of the model:
Dimensions (W x D x H): 380 mm x 251 mm x 12 mm
Active area Pen (W x D): 224 mm x 140 mm
Active area Touch (W x D): 224 mm x 140 mm
Weight: 990 g
Multi-touch Support: yes
Wireless Accessory Support: yes
Resolution (per point): 0.005 mm (5,080 lines per inch)
Tilt sensitivity: ± 60°
Maximum reading height with pen: 10 mm
No. of ExpressKeys: 8 capacitve keys
Touch Ring controller: 1
So in terms of specs there's nothing exciting about it, it's the same specs with Intuos 4 and almost the same with Intuos 3. Actual

Back to School! (or, I Think I'm a Terrorist)School's back in! Yay!!!!!!!!! Yeah, right. I was so excited to go back to school. It took exactly one week and I became depressed. As a matter of fact, I became so depressed I called a suicide hotline. I had to press 1 for English. I was connected to a call center in Pakistan. I told them I was suicidal. They got excited and asked me if I could drive a truck .Back to School! (or, I Think I'm a Terrorist)2 years ago in Personal More Like This
My students have finally settled down from the initial excitement of school starting. Things are getting back to normal. Just today one of my students' parents told them it was okay to give teachers the finger again. Students. Love them or hate them, but you can't hit them with a shovel
One of the hardest things I can get my students to bring to a music class is a pencil. So this year, on the first day of school I handed each student a brand new, sharpened pencil and told

As I am lately back with some manips, I thought its about time
to make a journal with some of my favourite stockers
Why they are my favourite? Well they are for several reasons!
Each of those who will be listed here, will have:
good to excellent quality,
Sizes which are usable beyond webpics shortest side at least 1200,
(that excludes cutouts, jewellery or any stuff you wouldn't need as primary object in your manip and seamless patterns)
Rules that allow commercial usage (at least on dA and on request for outside dA)
Rules that allow outside dA usage without being forced to slap the stockers name ON the artwork itself.
or Rules that are fully unrestricted
This includes stock-providers that take a few points for their stock, because I rather pay a few points if the TOU's & quality are great, than

Hello! Thank you for participating! Please introduce yourself!
Hi, my name is Dean Packwood, I'm 42, New Zealand born and currently living in Taupo, New Zealand. I've drawn and sketched my whole life, mainly in pencil, ballpoint pen and coloured pencil. About 20 years ago, I got caught up with work and other stuff and really didn't get back into it until the beginning of 2013. I had never really gotten into painting in a big way until now. If you haven't done anything for a while, don't despair, it's like getting back on a bicycle, you're a bit rusty but pick it back up in no time at all. It was only a matter of a week or so and I was ahead of where I was 20 years ago.
Why do you create tutorials?
It's my personal belief that there is a skill to art (not like a lot of so-called "art" today).

sxc.hu is NOT availablefor derivative works, i.e. photomanipulations and collages

Here are Jade's journals on the matter:
Now, what you do with this information is up to you. I for my part will no longer use sxc.hu stock because I don't want to have to wait for permission each time I consider using something. Thankfully, our resouces and stock gallery here on dA is very extensive.
BUT also there I would be careful sometimes - if it feels off, I don't use the stock. That is especially an issue for premades, brushes and cut-out stock as some peo
