An open letter of thanks to thatgamecompanyDear thatgamecompany team,An open letter of thanks to thatgamecompany2 years ago in Personal More Like This
After many reflections and doubts, I couldn't come up with a better way to thank you properly than this - sharing my thoughts with my companions and fellow players, all over the world, hoping that this eventually gets to you somehow.
If it happens, I want you to know this. No matter who of you gets to read this letter in the end; everyone at thatgamecompany has, and will always have, my eternal gratitude for making it possible - for me and thousands of other players - to enjoy one of the most extraordinary, unforgettable, amazing experiences we will ever come across in our lives.
I think that, in a way, videogames are an unlucky medium. Not because of their popularity, which is immense, or their range of opportunities - for the truth is, in fact, the exact opposite. If, in this world and these times, there is a form of art which can claim to be creative, widespread, open to anyone and easily accessible, videogames are definitely that form of art, thanks to th

Illustrated Poetry ContestUPDATE: Only 25 days left to enter!!Illustrated Poetry Contest8 months ago in Personal More Like This
My debut original poetry collection, Forgetting: impressions from the millennial borderland, was published a couple of months ago, and I need your help to release a new, Illustrated Edition!
What I'm Looking For:
B&W line art to accompany each poem. Very simple.
What Kind of Line Art?
Anything. Traditional or digital, photography or photomanipulations, any style. The only requirement is that the image be black-and-white line art only. Shading is okay, as long as it's bar or hatch shading.
tl;dr = Nothing but lines; no color. No other restrictions. No nudity or porn.
And, obviously, the art should be in some way related to the poem it's meant to accompany. It can depict an image from the poem, or express how the poem made you feel, or what it made you think about. The connection doesn't have to be

Serif — Roman
In the last two article of the type design series we made a geometric sans serif and added italics and a bold weight. The geometric sans serif is the easiest style to do, but for me personally things really get interesting with serif typefaces. Of course there is the addition of serifs, but the structure and weight distribution is also much more advanced. In this article I will make an introduction to designing serif typefaces. This article won’t be as detailed as the previous ones because this third article serves as an expansion on the first two. In other words, I won’t get into the basic vector tools or type principles, nor will I show you how to design the letters step by step. I will explain techniques in detail when necessary, but generally I will refer to the techniques described in the first article particularly. So if necessary go back to the pre

In combination with the right spices and other food, it can be totally enjoyable to have vegetables on your plate.
So tell me, what is your favourite vegetable and what do you hate?
And if you know other vegetable deviations, share them! They need more love.

About Artists on Writers
Writers will always find inspiration in the visions of artists, always feeling compelled to tell the stories behind the moments captured in artists’ unforgettable images,
Artists will always find inspiration in the words of writers, always feeling compelled to lend visual reality and habitat to the characters described in the scribe’s haunting words.
Critics consider Maya Angelou’s most important writing to be her seven autobiographies, thinly disguised as novels, beginning with

Why Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not greatWhy Helvetica is not great2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Type design is a rather obscure profession but even the typefaces themselves don’t get too much attention by the general public. Most people could only name a few typefaces, but among those few are always Times New Roman, Arial and Helvetica. Well-known and popular or not, in this article I will show you why Helvetica is not the great typeface people perceive it to be.
Arial is often frowned upon due to its history, but what most people don’t know is that Helvetica has a very similar history. A bit different, but as far as I’m concerned it’s just as dubious and embarrassing. As most people who are interested in typefaces might know, Max Miedinger is the designer of Helvetica. However, what most people probably don’t know is that Max Miedinger was not a type designer. Miedinger st

This is a series of recurring, but maybe irregular typography related challenges for everyone to take part in. They will have a start and end date and each deviation must be submitted to dA after the start date. Only deviations created with each challenge in mind will be accepted.
Please remember this is a challenge, not a contest, there are no prizes to win.
This is mostly a source of "jobs" that you can do I could be more cheesy and say the prize will be finding out how awesome friendship is … but … oh well.
Here we go!
Picture Interpretation Challenge
How often do you look around your environment or at pictures and photos and think "Oh this object, its shape totally looks like a letter!" ? I am sure this happens to all of us and this challenge is exactly about that feeling!
This challenge is all about taking inspiration from a picture and create typography from it.

Sans serif — Italics & weights
In the previous article of the typography series I presented some of the basic principles of type design and we started designing a geometric sans typeface such as Futura. In this article we will expand that typeface and add italics and alternate weights. Or rather, I will show you how to design italics and briefly present how you can modify your regular weight typeface to create alternate weights rather than having to re-draw the whole letter.

Not so pure after all: Most holy water 'is contaminated with faecal matter' and could be harmful to health. Gives another meaning to holy shit, doesn't it? 86% of holy water contains faecal matter and in every millilitre of holy water there are up to 62 million bacteria. Bottoms up, people.

Sans serif — Roman
In this article/tutorial I will show you how to design a typeface. I will cover the basics and show you how to design advanced letters as well. There is so much I can talk about though, so if people like this article I might expand on this with future articles and get more into detail. I will only cover the design though, so you will have to research how to do the spacing and programming and turn your typeface into a usable font—or wait until I might do an article on that as well, but I don’t have such an article planned anytime soon.
What will we design?
I will first show you how to design some basic letters for a geometric sans typeface like Futura, because it utilizes geometric shapes, which is always my starting point for every typeface regardless of style. O
Making Sense of Modern Art: Joel SwansonWhen an art museum features a piece titled "Lady Gaga's Twitter Feed Translated into Morse Code", you really have to see for yourself. So it was that I headed down to the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Denver today, to see an exhibit of Joel Swanson's work.Making Sense of Modern Art: Joel Swanson10 months ago in Art Features More Like This
The afforementioned work was pretty much as its title indicated: a small LED set atop a white box, incessantly blinking, displaying the pop singer's twitter feed in visual dots and dashes. Per the museum program, "Transforming the ones and zeroes of contemporary technology into the dots and dashes of Morse code brings the two languages together and indicates how similar the two are..." Clever? Sort of. Interesting? Mmmm...maybe, as a starting point to discussing the history of language and communication. Art? I don't think so.
The rest of the exhibit contained further exploration of "language in its literal and physical forms". Examples:

I’m writing this article for the type of people who say that just can’t find motivation to:
Make a portfolio
Finish a painting
Work on their personal project
I got three tips I’m about to write, and it’s just advice and things that I found useful for myself. If you are capable to do any of these things you should definitely try them.
Fear. Get rid of it. If you are fearful of the outcome it will unmotivate you immediately. Just finish whatever it is and think about how you can improve after. If you can’t see what you need to improve ask someone else to tell you. There is always room to improve, and if you go into a critique with an open mind you will grow exponentially.
Think of it like this. If you were running one lap, and half way through you stopped because you were afraid you were going to throw up or pass out, you will never really know how fast you can run that lap. You didn’t push yours

Even the ghosts that haunt this place.
You know I love doing these giveaways, because they are fun and help me to meet new people and make new friends.
But lately, all that has been sucked away.
Because nobody is really joining anymore.
The last few giveaways I have done each have failed to even be half as big as the HUGE ones I used to do only a few weeks ago-
Used to be hundreds of people joined, in one day! They always hit the spotlight. Now I struggle to even get 100 watchers to join. Out of 5,500. WTF!
Now, I know many of those 5000 are dead and ghostified. But at least half are alive. So considering that, if 100/2700 join, that's about 3% participation. I've been on the brink of cancelling at least 3 giveaways now and erasing them- something i'd hate to do. One had to be obliterated completely.
I want to thank everyone who DOES regularly enter and comments on my art, but the way things are going I don't know if I SHOULD do the

Celebrating Diversity #1Welcome to this new series of Art Features! Even tho most of you are aware of the many many galleries and categories here on dA, I think most of us move in a sort of "comfort zone" between Galleries, Channels or Groups that provide us with a constant flow of new art.
