There are tons of ways to shade, this is just how I, personally, do it.

My shading technique changes constantly (because I hate how long it takes and how messy it is with characters that have tons of different colours and markings) but yeah, a walkthrough on how I shade, as requested by a friend //v

Sorry if there are any typos, I type fast so I often don't notice. ;v;

Hope its explained okay, I'm not good at explaining things ;-;

A couple of people have asked this now, and the explanation is always a metre long, and not very clear, so yes. :'D

Rainbow outline is pretty much the same thing, just putting different colours on top with the water tool btw. c:>

So….this has been sitting in my sta.sh since January! I’ve been meaning to write explanations for everything but still have yet to do so. But either way, I feel this is of more use posted rather than just hidden away in the abyss of my sta.sh gallery. So here it is: my not so recent fur tutorial without any actual guidance on how the heck I do things. Hehe, helpful right? ^^;

To sum everything up in a really vague/quick way: I do all my shading with the brush tool. The only things I adjust are the min size and brush size. Density is always set to 100% and I don’t touch blending, dilution, persistence, or anything else. So just the very basic function of the brush.

After setting the flat colors, I completely refill with a darker tone and then roughly block in with another darker tone. With the same settings I’ll then roughly go in with an even darker tone for the darkest shadows. After I’ve blocked the shadows in I’ll go back shade by shade and refine the fur. The lighter the tone the smaller the min size percentage. This is to help with refining the fur. On average I’ll have at least 5 or more different tones.

And that’s basically it. Sorry it’s so brief! I still hope to properly explain each step but for now I hope this is of some use…and not too confusing, hehe...

I was looking through my gallery and found an eye tutorial I made a while ago, which you can see here :
Eye Tutorial Thing by Wispful
And it was and is so ugly I had to re-do it

STEPS
1. Outline + Colour, did two variations of it
2. Taking a darker colour (or Multiply layer), do that
3. New layer, lumosity, I used a marker tool. And you do not have to use the original colour, for example for the red eye, I used orange for the lighting
4. New layer, lumosity, oval things and just for good measure, used a lighter colour for the circle in the center
5. sparkles w/ white colour + lumosity layer!!!

I also kinda rushed my fur here even though I said in the tutorial that I don't recommend doing that. Whoops.
Anywho, I hope you guys find this tutorial useful!
I would appreciate it if you send me a link back if you use the tutorial! I'd like to see how it helped y'all! :heart:

just a quick tutorial showing the diffrence between where my pixel art starts and ends.

Zooming in when doing pixles will help you a lot. MS PAINT is epic since it also lets you have a preview of the original size as you work on it.

IM NO PRO, so I suggest you who want to actually learn it for real and learn it well click here -> www.pixeljoint.com/forum/forum…
