CLOONAN podcastI did a very open (maybe too open on my end) podcast with Becky Cloonan over at Multiversity last week. We talk about the (so called) diminishing role of artists, the new fans you get as a writer, and our plans to write for other artists. We also talk about our "5 Year Plans" and how we each put more effort into our own stories that we do into other peoples (we think it's about 30%).CLOONAN podcast1 year ago in Personal More Like This

Thank you all so much for the tremendous support and positive feedback you have given to two of my favorite creations, Otto and Victoria. i have been asked about them a lot lately so i thought i would do a journal entry to offer a little back story as well as a look forward to what is in store for these two unlikely p
looking back to about a year ago i had doodled a very rough sketch in my sketch book of a girl walking an octopus. and when i say rough i mean rough. the sketch itself was nothing more than a study of contrasting silhouettes. i was drawn to the play between a very rigid character and a squiggly one.
i had forgotten about that sketch until i heard about a steampunk t-shirt design for www.welovefine.com. i thought that this design might have a chance so i went ahead and finished it off. well it got alot of attention and i am happy to say that it won the competition. the shirt started to sell
How Your Environment Affects Your ArtA Discussion with Bobby Chiu by Flynn RingroseHow Your Environment Affects Your Art3 weeks ago in Personal More Like This
A lot of people who email in live in circumstances or with people that don’t support their art. What do you think about that?
The first thing is families. Some people don’t have supportive families, and some are too supportive. I’m sure we all have our stories. So you want to look out for yourself and ask, “Is my environment healthy for my growth?” You want to make sure that you’re surrounding yourself with other hungry artists.
For me, in the very, very, very beginning, it was just my brother, Ben and I in our parent’s basement. That was not a good environment because I was living with my parents. Which isn’t necessarily bad, except your parents might think, “Bobby’s home, maybe he would like to take out the trash, or mow the lawn, or whatever.”

be really dedicatedSo, I was drawing at work yesterday (I'm now at WB btw, yay!), when I just looked down, startled, and thought, "This is what I wanted it to look like." I suddenly couldn't fathom how that had happened. Like I don't remember when I got to the point where someone tells me their idea, then I'm able to sit down and just MAKE THAT THING. I remember being someone who couldn't figure out how to do that, and I acknowledge being the me I am now, but where were the two bridged and when did I cross? This whole week has kind of been like that - me thinking about the person I was when I joined this site and the person I am today.be really dedicated2 years ago in Personal More Like This
On that note, lemme take you back to a journal entry from August 2007, essentially at the start of my second year of USC (I was getting a Master's in Comm. Management):
"My career counselor at my school (which btw, I feel, MUST train its employees to dissuade bright-eyed students from having any ambitions outside of the SPECIFIC interests of the

5%If you're reading this now, it means you're roughly in the 5%. Most people who go online to read about comics will end up reading previews and "top 10" lists--subjects we all, or course, enjoy. But the articles/blogs that critically analyze our industry are usually only read by two types: people in the biz whom are affected by this stuff, and the few readers who are interested in reading more than word balloons when it comes to comics.5%3 years ago in Personal More Like This
And I'm not knocking people who don't care to read these articles. All readers are contributing to the industry with their buying power, and I'm thankful for them, even if they're not in the 5%. I admit, if I had a normal 9-5 job and a boss that was kicking my ass 5 days a week, I might not have the tolerance for these sorts of articles either.
That being said, I think we need more of these articles/blogs written from different points of view--more from creators especially. The 2010s will likely be r

Next time you complain...Next time you choose to complain about how an artist's watermark obstructs or 'ruins' an image, don't.Next time you complain...2 months ago in Personal More Like This
The only people you have to thank as to why these artists feel a need to protect their work in such a way is the people who are so disrespectful they steal, alter, and even try to sell their work.
If people did not have such sticky hands and bothered to read the words written on or below an art piece's description, there wouldn't be an issue.
However, they don't.
Oh, some of them do but then choose to ignore those words of 'DO NOT USE' and proceed to alter, crop, blur, noise, or even lower the quality of a piece just to 'make it their own' . People who don't know any better believe it.
Meanwhile the original artists are feeling insulted as hell having some jerk taking their hard work and prancing around like they have talent when in reality they're nothing but a faker.
People say to watermark your work protect it and then when an artist does, people compl

Who’s the most important person now in the Star Wars franchise? JJ Abrams? Think again!
It has begun. Below you will find the trailer to the beginning chapter of the next Star Wars sequels, Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens,a new trilogy for a new generation. One well crafted 88 second trailer later, and it's just what we were hoping for. X-Wings, Tie Fighters, brand new Light Saber designs, the Millenium Falcon and just
understand a painting study dont just copyThis is purely an observation from my point of view but whenever i see a study or painting based on a masterpiece or a screen plate. The results are almost in every case very good.So this tells me that our ability to copy is quite good and its not really required to be a high level artist.Junior level to mid level ones can pull this off easily too. Everything you need to know is already in the image we are trying to copy so it becomes a recipe for us.understand a painting study dont just copy2 years ago in Personal More Like This
the important thing though is to not "copy" it but to understand it and deconstruct a work method from it.And if you understand that then the work based from your own mind will be alot better.
When i see this kind of work , for me its not the level of detail and accurcy that one puts in the copied artwork that impresses me, but the images based on that learned knowledge afterwards. And to tell you the truth not many people understand this knowledge or are aware of how important it is to understand it.But the interesting phenomenon is that
Hey.You are beautiful.Hey.2 years ago in Personal More Like This
You are important.
And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
On those days - the ones where you can't even cry because you've used up all the tears - just try to stop and think. Think about the people who do love you. Who do care for you so much that if anything happened to you, they wouldn't know what to do.
I just want to write this somewhere for people to see because goddammit, I know. I know how it feels to feel like you're in a constant black hole. I still do. And I have been for too long now.
But I will not give in because I know deep in my heart, someday it's going to get better.
If anyone ever needs to talk, I'll be here. It may take a couple of days to respond, but I'll try.
And why am I posting this?
Let's just say that something happened today and I felt compelled to reach out because I know that even a few words on a screen can make all the more difference in a person's life.

LINE WEIGHT III art show at Gallery Nucleus!LINE WEIGHT III art show at Gallery Nucleus!4 months ago in Personal More Like This
I'm nothing if not terrible about telling you folks about things at the last minute, right? So let's not break tradition- I'm going to be heading down to LA this weekend for the Line Weight III show at Nucleus Gallery! This is a show dedicated entirely to traditional linework- I rarely get to sell originals, let alone six of them, so I'm pretty excited. Additional details:
Just take a moment to stare at that flyer and look at what good company I'm in, I'll wait. I KNOW RIGHT? It's daunting. I'm flattered. I love all these guys.
