How to get really DARK backgroundsPeople ask me this all the time. How do I get such dark backgrounds on my drawings. The answer is complex, so I will step it out below. How to get really DARK backgrounds6 years ago in Personal More Like This
1) The paper you use MATTERS! I use only Bristol, which is 2 or 3 times thicker than drawing paper, so it has a strong tooth to the paper
2) I use either B or 2B. The softer you go (3B-9B) the more wax is in the graphite, which makes it like a crayon and hard to blend.
3) I KEEP the pencil SHARP, and I hold it SIDEWAYS.
4) I do small sections at a time
5) I TURN the pencil in my fingers as I darken the area. This also helps keep the pencil sharp.
6) I use a back and forth scraping motion, that I can FEEL dig into the paper.
7) I end up going back over it more than once before finished, in a different direction.
8) I LATER use a harder pencil (H, F) and go over the dark area again
9) I use a "workable spray fixative" made by Krylon which reduces glare
10) I never use a flash on the camera when taking the photo of it
11) I ONLY take the photo during the

Enhancing the quality of your journalsHello, deviants!Enhancing the quality of your journals4 years ago in Personal More Like This
In the last couple of weeks, we've been rolling out changes to the journal system, and with the introduction of the Journal Portal, your journals now have the potential to be showcased in the Footer of deviantART or in the Popular section of the Portal –- something that could draw tons more eyes to your work!
So, how do you make a journal that’s worth sharing? Even if reaching a wider audience isn't your goal, these tips will help you get better feedback and spark more conversation, which is one of the best things about our vibrant community.
megturney's Top 7 Tips for Enhancing the Quality of Journals:
#1. Write what you’re passionate about
Love black and white photography? Let’s talk it! Do you have a deep philosophical discussion you're itching to bring out to the world? Fluffy and serious blogs alike, the most important part of any journal entry is showing your audience
How to: Margin + PaddingFor this tutorial series I am explaining different elements you can create or modify with the help of CSS. The level of experience that is needed to be able to understand the tutorials can differ and will be in no order. How to: Margin + Padding2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
However I will try to explain the things as simple as possible. Upcoming questions should be left in a comment directly to this blog so that people with similar problems can look them up later as well.
The tutorial series is based on the gruze-structure of journals. If you are still using the old structure or have a journal installed that used it, things won’t work the same way like explained below.
For simple skins the old structure is fine, but the more features you add, the more I would recommend using the gruze-structure. You can look up the differences here: http://ginkgografix.deviantart.com/art/Old-vs-Gruze-Journals-112772369
It seems like a lot of people are struggling with the usage of margin and padding. In the end it doesn’t matter ho

JACK FROST IS REAL!!!Okay, so I know this might be really weird and kind of childish for some people but I think he is! Here's the story why I suddenly have this conclusion. The other night I was talking to my sister who loves rise of the guardians, she told me that one night as she was checking her deviant art that one of her friends had said something that she had found interesting. Her friend said that she had another friend that loved the ROTG version of Jack Frost. So just to make her happy she went outside and said " Jack Frost if you are real put some frost on the ground tomarrow." And the next day there was. So then, my sister said that she had done the same thing only "Jack Frost if you are real put some frost on my window." The next day there was. Plus she had checked all of the windows in our house twice and there had only been frost on HER WINDOW!! So I found this pretty intersting, that night, I said "Jack Frost if you are real, give me a sign that you are real also let me see you in my dreamsJACK FROST IS REAL!!!3 years ago in Personal More Like This

FUUURRR tutorialsFirst off, before you can really get into serious fur work, you might want to invest some time into making your own fur brushes or in finding some. Well I found two good sets some time back that I found to be rather priceless. So unless you want to spend the rest of your life filling in one hair at a time, I suggest looking into these, they will save you a lot of headache . Trust me, I have tried to do the 'one hair at a time' method...it really kills your wrist.FUUURRR tutorials10 years ago in Personal More Like This

PE: The Impact of Color1. - WHAT IS COLOR?PE: The Impact of Color3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Color is the aspect of things that is caused by differing qualities of light being reflected or emitted by them, as received by the human eye and processed by the human brain. It is a function of light and biology, not an exact science, no two people can see it exactly the same.
The human eye and brain together translate light into color. Light receptors within the eye transmit messages to the brain, which produces the familiar sensations of color. Newton observed that color is not inherent in objects. Rather, the surface of an object reflects some colors and absorbs all the others. We perceive only the reflected colors. Thus, red is not "in" an apple. The surface of the apple is reflecting the wavelengths we see as red and absorbing all the rest. An object appears white when it reflects all wavelengths and black when it absorbs them all.
"Colors are the deeds of light, its deeds and sufferings."

'Ello there! If you've been on any social media site, you most likely in one form or another have used an emoticon. An emoticon is an icon that expresses emotion. Such as
Emotes are an easy way to express yourself and I'm going to teach you how to shade some.
Almost all emotes are sized to be 15x15 (unless you are making a larger one; tutorial by IceXDragon described here). You can use lots of programs to make them. I use MS Paint to make my emotes because I believe it's the easiest to control but you can use whatever you like.
An emote's outline will look like this (You can use it if you want. ) :
Here's what it looks like at a bigger scale.
Emotes should look circular like the one above. I would recommend this size for all emotes at a standard size level. At this stage, I like to mess with the emote to see what k

Best video resources for digital artistsLearning the theory without any practice is incredibly pointless when it comes to art. No book, no lecture and no video will ever teach you how to paint if you won't find the time for creating something yourself.Best video resources for digital artists2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
On the other hand, doing everything alone and without any instructions is the longest and hardest way of achieving anything. What's worse it doesn't guarantee you success.
Through the last couple of years I've been painting, I've learned that the best way for me to learn to paint is to copy techniques of people who know what they're doing. There's no better way doing it than watching videos with commentaries. That's why today I thought I'd share with you some great lectures, tutorials and demos I've found on youtube. A Beginner's Guide to Archery in Stock and ArtWith movies like Avengers, Brave and Hunger Games, 2012 seems to be the Year of the Archers and many artists have already been inspired to create their own archer characters.A Beginner's Guide to Archery in Stock and Art3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Whether you're thinking about having one of your OCs pick up bow and arrow (in writing or drawing) or you're a stock artist who wants to create some decent archery stock, I hope this little guide helps you understand the wonderful thing that is archery.
First and foremost, a little disclaimer: For this article I will mainly draw from my own experiences over the past few years. I am what you'd call an intuitive or instinctive archer, which roughly comes closest to medieval-styled archery. At the moment I'm shooting a modern Samick bow (without stabilizer or sights) and am in the process of making my own recurve bow out of robinia wood (similar to a few bows you can see in my gallery).
However, in archery there are many styles and differences in material used, draw, stance, finger position etc. – it all depend
