Italian Masters of Horror
Zombie by liliesformary
Giallo is Italian for yellow… and Horror
In the wake of the real life horrors meted out on Italians during World War II, brutalized by Mussolini and then by Nazi occupation and then having their country used as one great battleground chessboard between Nazis and the invading U.S. and Allied forces, there was for a long time little appetite for horror in movies. It wasn’t until 1956 that the first genuine horror film (a vampire story) was produced and released. It bombed, soundly rejected by the public. The film would be of little note

She's not the kind of girl
Who likes to tell the world
About the way she feels about herself
She takes a little time
In making up her mind
She doesn't want to fight against the tide
Lately I'm not the only one
I say never trust anyone
Always the one who has to drag her down
Maybe you'll get what you want this time around
Can't bear to face the truth
So sick he cannot move

Miranda patterns--more info addedOKAY. I am fiiiinally posting the Miranda patterns I used for :iconThresherMaw: white Hex suit. I will come back to edit and -try- to do a step by step process..but it has been nearly 2 years since I worked on it so some details will be fuzzy. I cannot go into how to piece together a suit, how to use a sewing machine, insert zippers, etc since all of that is a learned process...and there are great video guides online. So if you have never sewn, this might not be helpful. For anyone who has--I hope this is coherent enough.Miranda patterns--more info added3 years ago in Personal More Like This
I used two patterns: KwikSew 3502 http://kwiksew.mccall.com/k3502-products-20063.php?page_id=3338 for the top, Simplicity 2315 http://www.simplicity.com/p-5384-misses-miss-petite-skirts-pants.aspx for the pants (those button flaps definitely are not used in the costume).
Two things about this: I mixed a stretch and non-stretch pattern together. DO NOT DO THIS IF YOU HAVE NEVER DONE PATTERN ALTERING. I took a course with a costume professor on altering patterns, so I l

APRIL/MAY FEATURE and UpdatesHello everyone! Its time for our "monthly" updates and feature!! I had to combine April and May due to life. I graduated and got a job a week later with short notice. Hopefully now that I am settled at work, I can keep up for the rest of the summer.APRIL/MAY FEATURE and Updates1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I am writing up the rules and information on our upcoming contest and it will be posted by late June-early July. There will be both art and points prizes to be won!!
We are all a bit busy right now and sometimes we cannot vote on works in time and they occasionally expire. Please resubmit and write a comment mentioning that the work was previously expired. That will get our attention. Please do not resubmit until the work is actually expired (which I believe is set to 7 days)!! It creates a lot of backlog for other submissions and we may decline for a double submission by mistake.
Please bring any concerns or suggestions up on this blog

Underappreciated MammalsClass Mammalia contains a lot of the world's favorite megafauna--tigers, lions, wolves, elephants, zebras, dolphins, etc--so it's easy to see how "less charismatic" species get overlooked, not just in the public eye but in the scientific realm too. Rodents and bats contribute to over half of all mammal species, but the majority of mammalogists work with carnivores or ungulates, particularly game species. Here are some very cool mammal species that need more time in the public eye. Some are common, some are rare, and some are near extinction, but all could use a bit more appreciation.Underappreciated Mammals3 years ago in Art Features More Like This

Jin Attempts To Explain Cosplay Photography As requested by many of you, I've submitted this guide as a dA news article. Here is the link. I'm happy this proved to be useful for a lot of you guys! It's the least I can do to give a little something back for your appreciation of our work. Thank you!Jin Attempts To Explain Cosplay Photography8 years ago in Personal More Like This
First of all, let me warn you that by the end of this journal entry, you may find yourself sick of my face. (If you aren't already.) I'll be using mostly myself as an example for the things I'm going to discuss, because I'm the only person I can poke fun at without restrictions.
I get asked a lot of questions about these cosplay photos that most of you have come to know me for. Sometimes it's about the techniques we use, requests for tips and advice for other people who want to do something similar. Other times, the comments come from people who aren't familiar with cosplay, but are curious about it and are interested to know more. So I thought of making this li

Through The Lens #3 ~ The Validity of Abstraction“There is nothing worse than a sharp image of a fuzzy concept.”Through The Lens #3 ~ The Validity of Abstraction2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
- Ansel Adams
When photography was first created it was used primarily for portraits. It was not yet mobile and therefore could not yet be used in genres like landscape or journalism. Portrait painters at the time felt that photography was not legitimately artistic, and this spurred the "Pictorialist" photographic movement. In defense of their art, Pictorialists depicted subjects with soft visual effects and artistic poses. At the beginning of the twentieth century a man named Paul Strand countered the "Pictorialist" movement stating that it was too apologetic, and did not take advantage of the new medium.
Paul Strand was an American Modernist photographer leading the drive to establish photography as a valid form of fine art. However, he did not believe that all forms of photography held artistic value. His argument was based on the idea - central to modernist art, of 'trut
Group Abuse: Killing our CommunitiesGroups! What a great feature on deviantART. They kicked off last year and have been a huge success. Nothing but good has come from the groups system or has it? I can tell you that right now under the layer of hype lies a deep, dark problem that's slowly killing our communities, unknown artists, and our ART. I'm going to tell you my own story, then explain.Group Abuse: Killing our Communities5 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I'm the founder of a large photography group here on deviantART. We've been using the groups system since the very first day they officially released. At the time of this writing, we have almost 3600 members. We've grown rapidly to become one of the largest and most successful photography groups around. As a founder, it's always interesting to see how your group is doing. It's a lot of fun to look at statistics, new members, submissions, and comments. Until now.
We had an excellent discussion in our group chat debating the following issues. Together, we came up with these issues and decided to raise them to the communit
