Told to pin
her arms and legs
down on my paper;
Take my pen & tear her open
Expose her limbs
And rearrange her vertebrae
to fit my selfish needs
But what the teacher doesn't know
is I already let mine escape
Clutching to the secrets
that still remain inside her
Where they belong

Together on row upon row again
Of blank verse or perhaps liberal rhyme.
‘Slam’ all you want, other poets wonder;
Your ignorance of couplets a blunder?
Yes! I speak harshly, but it’s no gross crime,
To point with honesty failed verse of thine.
No real poet discards upper case words;
Lets prose crawl on paper like listless worms.
You seek to free verse of those stern letters,
Sever away bleak capital fetters,
But it doesn’t sing of great speech sublime,
Rather, it sneaks of writing in spare time.
Wait! before you throw me in the icy Rhine;
It’s hard to put verse together in rhyme,
To make our dull words sound great all the time,
Hear them ring out loud, like a clear clock’s chime,
Heralding a poet’s summer prime.
Yet the sacred muses weep at your crime;
Your pentameter mangled thick like slime,
The subject not gilded in raiment fine;
Your bold ink font, crystal waters divine
Tastes bitter to the ton

Critique: A BreakdowndeviantArt is a website focusing on art. Wherever there is art, there is bound to be critique- no exceptions. While this fact may be aggravating and/or intimidating to younger, more inexperienced artists, they should learn and heed some basic advice on how to respond appropriately to receiving a critique.Critique: A Breakdown3 years ago in Editorial More Like This
This is a little bit of information about critiques- who critiques, what a critique encompasses, the different "styles" or approaches people take when offering critique, and appropriate ways to respond to all kinds of critiques.
What is Critique
Noun: A detailed analysis and assessment of something; a critical review or commentary, especially one dealing with works of art or literature.
Verb: Evaluate (a theory or practice) in a detailed and analytical way
In a nutshell, a critique (or to critique) is to approach something and analyze something in a critical manner. The key words here are analyze and criti

The birds that fly above me
Are the dragons of my kingdom.
In my head,
Cats and dogs are lions and wolves,
And my fish is a sea monster.
In my head,
My pen is a sword,
And I’m fighting witches and evil men
To find my prince charming.
In my head,
Butterflies spin through the air
And fly through my bedroom windows
To whisper things in a language
That only I understand.
In my head,
There is a world other than
These black and white dreams
And these faded grey skies.
In my head,
There is a universe.
Can’t you see it, too?

There's a certain joy in not doing this face-to-face. For one, I don't have to leave my apartment and I have the quiet company of my goldfish and my goldfish alone. (I don't like people, which is why I love books. You can understand that.) For another, I don't have to see your presumably crestfallen and injured attitude when I tear apart the prose you cried and bled and sweated over for weary nights on end. But really the best parts are those uninterrupted hours alone with your manuscript and the shred of you that lies inside. It's a small shred, but an important one. It's the one that tells me who you are and what you think and how you feel and I never have to look at you and be disappointed when the real thing doesn't come up to scratch. As I sit there, un-tensing and re-tensing and tense-shifting and shift-entering (and damn it, wishing English were like German so I could get rid of those clunky space-wasting n-dashes--oh, damn there they are again) I feel li
GAY DISNEY RANTI'm sure the majority of you have watched Disney Channel before, and I know that whenever the TV's on during the day at my house, Disney Channel is what's being watched. I was reading an article about Disney's Good Luck Charlie, and how it is going to be showing an episode featuring a lesbian couple--Disney's first show to do so. And in the comments section below were some of the most vulgar, terrible, bigoted, homophobic comments I've ever had the displeasure of reading.GAY DISNEY RANT3 months ago in Philosophical More Like This
Article Comment: "Not right. Disney was always a wholesome family channel..... 'traditional families' (male / females couples capable of procreating). I agree with most others; if this is going to be the new norm at Disney Channel I will just stop watching all together. Disney was one of the last places a true American (Christian - seeing as how this country was founded on Christianity) could watch 'normal life' on TV."
Okay, FIRST OFF, traditional families are now male/female couples capable of having children? What
LoveImagine a couple with the names Taylor and Sam.Love4 years ago in Flash Fiction & Vignettes More Like This
Taylor and Sam lived together in a small apartment in a small city. Sam taught English at a local high school and Taylor worked at a coffee shop full time. The couple had met while Sam was getting a master's degree from the local university and would go to the coffee shop to work. They were in love.
One day, Taylor came down with the flu and couldn't go into work. The youngish barista sat and watched TV but soon fell asleep with the sickness. Taylor had a fever. Sam came home and brought Taylor Chinese food, including wanton soup, which Sam's mother had always said was endowed with magical healing powers. They cuddled up on the couch and ate the soup and watched Taylor's favorite movie, even though Sam thought it was soppy and silly. They were in love.
Another day, Taylor came home from work to find that their cat, Missy, had gotten out. Taylor put up posters and asked around and called Sam to break the bad news. That night, Sam cried and

Mom’s heels hit the tile floor like gunshots. Dad saunters from the opposite direction. As they come into view, meeting at the kitchen doorway, they robotically move together as a single unit, as if to assure us that they are still sleeping in the same room. They split at the table. Dad sits at his place, grunts into his newspaper, and spoon-feeds cereal into his half-open mouth. He hides his forearms under the paper to cover up his goose bumps. Mom, in her unraveling, tacky, autumn sweater stops short, pausing to stare out the window. Her shoulders run perpendicular to her husband. The face on her cheeks is pulled tight enough to blend in with the October clouds and fog. She’s cold enough to melt into the glass and fade into the sky.
Nobody notices that breakfast was already on the table.
“Nice weather we’re having,” Dad lies.
I place my hand on the small of Abby’s back and shuffle her into a chair. She’s only ten, but she knows be

The Problems With Stories Written by TeenagersDon't be offended at the title. "Teenagers" is just my way of saying "people who write unprofessional/shallow stories." Not all teenagers write shallow stories, it just sounds catchier.... Anyway.The Problems With Stories Written by Teenagers8 months ago in Reviews & Guides More Like This
The first thing I want to make clear is: I'm not talking about anything mechanical in this deviation. Grammar/spelling is important (obviously), but that point has been beaten to death by people on the internet already. My purpose, as always, is to talk about the stories themselves, regardless of the way they are communicated. Whether it be through written word or on-the-spot narration, I believe there are certain tricks to telling good stories. Not rules, mind you. Tricks.
I don't believe that telling good stories is about what you "should" do, rather than what you shouldn't. Example: people generally hate Mary Sues, right? Well, sometimes I notice things that are "like" Mary Sues, in the sense that they're equally as shallow/unprofessional ways of telling stories. The purpose of this deviat

As the first soft gray wave of pre-dawn light filtered in through the open bedroom window, there was the slightest movement beneath the blankets. He detected it of course immediately, his peaked ears twitching and rotating like tiny radar stations, his ever-vigilant amber eyes flashing fully open. Yes, she was stirring. Soon she would be awake. His guardian duties were done for another night. He carefully raised himself from where he had lain curled up at the foot of the bed and alighted with a little jump from the bed to the floor. His four black-stockinged paws made no sound as he padded across the hardwood floor. Then came the short hop to the dresser top beneath the open window. There he hesitated to turn and regard his sleeping charge for a moment before departing. He wondered how such a seemin

One of Gaea's Warships
Me, Percy, Hazel, Piper, Leo, and Frank all got capture.... I am crying to bad from the sight I saw earlier today. Jason's died... She killed him.
"Sam... Don't cry we need you right now." I heard Percy say behind me. But I am too emotional to pay attention. They use a weapon that can fire Greek Fire like a cannon. They blasted Jason with it.
I see Gaea's fuzzy half form appear in front of me. She had a cruel grin on her face." Yes, don't cry my dear. You don't want to die with your makeup running." she chuckled.
I launch at her. But the chains hold me back. If only they were longer.
"Oh touchy..." she cooed.
I curse in latin, Percy curses in greek, just about everyone in our group curses.
"Language kiddies. And today shall be the day where you and your precious man-kind dies..." She trailed off as the boat closes in on a bridge.
"Ma'am! What about about the bridge?" one of her minions asked.
"Blow it up..."she says as she walks to her "throne"

Had the Name been clear then,
Blood wouldn't be seeping from these ears,
Dead with the stench of rotting flesh.
Utter darkness eclipsed from sight,
Breathing was hard and forced with lack of air.
Eyes flashing to every corner,
Watching the shadows crawl along the ground.
Ripping flesh from bloodied bones,
Gasping from terror and yells of pain.
Steam rising to eat me alive,
Suffocating from heat and dehydration.
Never had I dreamed, or dare believe,
That a place like this could really exist.
Fire ablaze like trees in a jungle,
Screams from other tortured souls echoing.
End it, end it, just end this suffering.
Had I seen the truth before, I wouldn't be here,
But I was mistaken, was deceived by everyone else.
I should have listened just once, to His saving Grace.
Dead; boiling in a pot of human skulls,
It was too late to call out His name.
As the devil sends his hellhounds to get me,
I cried, screamed, whiled, begge
