I use a 9x12 Wacom Intuos 3 and a Wacom Cintiq 24 HD. I don't prefer one over the other! If I'm in my studio, I'm on my Cintiq and if I'm on my laptop I'm on my Intuos. It's really just a matter of where I'm doing my work from.
My digital paintings are made with Adobe Photoshop CS5. Every so often, I'll start my drafts on paper but it's far more common for me to build my drawings up completely in a digital environment.
How long does it take you to make a drawing?
How long I spend on a drawing really depends on the complexity. For my larger more complicated drawings, it takes anywhere between 6-20 hours. Smaller and more sketchy drawings take around 1-4 hours.
When did you start drawing? How did you learn to draw?
I've been doodling since I was a kid but I didn't get serious about drawing until I was in college. I majored in Studio
US killed more with chemical weaponsWestern governments sure like to talk smack about various dictators abusing "their own" people with this or that. What kind of phrase is that anyway? Does it mean it would somehow be less wrong if the people being gassed were not "their own"? Every time I hear that, I cringe. I know a bit about what the US has done on that front, so I can discuss it below. I am quite sure Britain, France, and other "high horse" bullshitters have done their share.US killed more with chemical weapons1 year ago in Personal More Like This
To start, here is a nice list of what the US government has done to "their own" cattle (err, people) - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unethical_human_experimentation_in_the_United_States This chilling list concludes with "As of 2007, not a single U.S. government researcher had been prosecuted for human experimentation, and many of the victims of U.S. government experiments have not received compensation, or in many cases, acknowledgment of what was done to them." I'm not a big conspiracy theorist, but these are only the acknowledged s

Live the dream, don't talk about it!Doug TenNapel, independent comics creator, is an inspiration to me in many ways. He has a fun, accessible art style that is dramatic and fresh. His story telling is always askew in the best of ways. I don't think I've read one of his graphic novels without having some smiles and a surprise or two along the way. On top of that, he is outspoken about almost everything in his life. (I think of him as the Rush Limbaugh of comics- oh man, that sounds really bad, but early Rush, not present day Rush, if that helps.) I agree with most things he states on Facebook. BUT- the thing I am most inspired about him is his drive (in the old days we would call that "work ethic"). The guy does NOT give up. Because of that, he single-handedly will put out a new graphic novel a year. While creating a webcomic. While pitching new TV show development ideas in Hollywood. While running a half marathon. While working freelance jobs.Live the dream, don't talk about it!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
How to cope with Art BlocksAlmost every single artist has at one point or the other in their life lost motivation, inspiration or even both and without the knowledge of how to deal with what we then call an Art Block, it can take a long time to overcome this lack of artistic drive. A time that might otherwise be used for further improvement and personal artistic growth. How to cope with Art Blocks3 years ago in Personal More Like This
So today I would like to give you a few tips on how to defeat an art block. There is no definite guarantee to either of them, as everybody experiences their blocking differently but maybe you can at least find small suggestions that will eventually help.
Inspiration is literally everywhere, you just need to open your eyes to see it.
We can find inspiration through:
Letting your favourite books, movies, series or games inspire you is always one of the most obvious ways. Fan Art is a good way to retrieve inspiration because most of all y
TO YOU ASPIRING ARTISTS...FROM JOE MADUREIRAHere's some of the most amazing and invaluable advice you'll most-likely ever get from one of my good colleagues and legends in comics/gaming, creator JOE MADUREIRA. "DO YOU REALLY WANT TO BE A SUCCESSFUL ARTIST?
Or a successful WORKING PROFESSIONAL?
Believe it or not there is a difference. I'm not usually a soapbox type guy, I don't like instructing people, and I think I'm a terrible teacher. But hey, it's Friday and I'm in a strange mood. So here goes:
I've noticed that a good number of my fans happen to be aspiring artists themselves. This is for all you guys. I get asked constantly: "Where should I go to school?" "What classes should I take?" "What should I study for anatomy?" "What pencils and paper do you use?" "Should I be working digitally now instead of traditionally?" "How do I fix my poses? Learn composition? Perspective?" "When
PracticeBy now everybody already knows that becoming a good artist doesn't come from talent alone. On contrary; talent is a myth. Like the famous quote goes: "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration". Meaning so much that even with a good idea and a bright mind, you still have to work your ass off in order to achieve something. While this makes mad skills available for basically everybody, I still hear many people complain about practice being a rather boring thing, or about them practicing a lot but still getting nowhere.Practice5 months ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So I thought; Oh well... Why no article about practice?
Conscious vs unconscious practice
First of all lets divide practice in roughly two types. You have the conscious type of practice. This is the kind of practice in which you're sitting down and thinking to yourself "Hell yeah! I'm gonna draw some <subject> today to get better at this!". And then there's the unconscious type of practice. The type of practice that is often more playful an

Epic Resources List - How to Get Awesome at ArtI often get asked how to get better at drawing and painting. While the main answer is practice there are a lot of fantastic resources that will make the journey far easier; below is a list of the ones I have personally found most useful. Some are free and some are paid, if you want the paid ones please actually buy them and support the hard-working artists that spend their valuable time providing quality education.Epic Resources List - How to Get Awesome at Art4 months ago in Personal More Like This
Also this is enough material to last you for, literally, years, so get one at a time, study it in detail, then once you're thoroughly finished move on to the next one. Reading a book or watching a dvd doesn't make you better. What makes you better is ingesting the information slowly, pondering and truly understanding it, and then applying it with diligent practice over a long period of time.
So without further ado, here is my...

Some art/webcomic adviceI got this really thoughtful question on my tumblr a week or two ago in regards to art/webcomics:Some art/webcomic advice5 months ago in Personal More Like This
"Hello K-bo, I Have been aspiring to be a webcomic artist much like yourself for a long time. Viewing your artwork and your achievements inspire me to reach out for my dreams. I wasn't able to see you at Fan Expo this year so I wasn't able to ask you this in person. I feel like I'm at a point where I'm comfortable enough with my art and style to start a webcomic... but I have no idea where to start... Do you have any advice? Thank you!"
I wanted to share my answer with you guys since it might be relevant to your interests. I hope at least some of it is useful to you. Here goes...
"First off, that’s awesome and I’m honored to have inspired you in any way. You should be very proud of yourself for being ready and willing to start this journey.

Copyright AbuseOk, the cold hard truth here, If you put something on the internet out to the public, expect it to the inspire others. It just shows they enjoy your work and want to learn from it, that's what being a Idol is about.Copyright Abuse2 years ago in Personal More Like This
"In a recent decision of the Full Federal Court, the Court reaffirmed the fundamental legal principle that copyright does not protect ideas and concepts but only the particular form in which they are expressed. The effect of this principle is that you cannot copyright a style or technique. Copyright only protects you from someone else reproducing one of your actual artworks – not from someone else coming up with their own work in the same style."
You can become known for doing something a certain way but you can't own it, you can only own the work as a whole. The same go's for characters, if its just similar not the same copyrights don't apply, even more so if its a generic design to began with.
So people stop bother the DA staff with this nonsen

This was a drawing challenge from :iconSenshiStock: and :iconmostlyguystock:!
Hands and feet are pretty hard to draw. Lots of artists struggle with them! Even when other things come naturally, hands and feet can still be quite a problem. The best way to get better at drawing hands and feet is to study them!
The Challenge: Sketch or draw 50 feet AND 50 hands from reference photos or life.
Deadline: The deadline has passed for this challenge, but you can still participate and make yourself a better artist!
You can post them as one giant post, in groups, one at a time, however you want! But please make a FOLDER in your gallery and put them all in there then send me a link to the folder. (If you do one submission with ALL of them at once, then you don't need the folder.)

When you want to quit art, think about this...I think most of us had it at some point. A moment in which we felt sad about our art. It might have been a full developed artblock, or just a small moment of hopelessness, perhaps questioning our artistic career, asking yourself "Why did I actually start doing this?".When you want to quit art, think about this...1 year ago in Personal More Like This
Over the years, I've had many moments like that. Most of them triggered by another failed drawing, a total lack of inspiration (while I needed to get creative work done --nothing more annoying than that!), or another harsh critique that was just a bit too much to handle, at that particular moment.
I've had many times that I doubted myself. There have been times when I questioned my creativity in general. Times when I was sad about just another harsh critique, or depressed for being turned down by another group or publisher. Times when I got angry and shouted that I wanted to quit art altogether.
But eventually, I never quit.
The point is... no matter how angry or sad I am, it always takes me a while to calm down and
