All righty! Thank you everyone for entering!! :iconmidnightshadow88: and I are going to try and vote on the winners as soon as we can! :)

All right so :iconthe-european-hetalia:’s recent contest gave me an idea for this one!

This time we’re doing a historical kind of contest. Just something in either of the Nordics individual histories or something between two or more of them.

Rules:
- Put “This is a contest entry for :iconnordicsxreader-oc:.” And why you choose the time you wrote/drew about in the description. :)
- At least one of the Nordics HAVE to be in it! (Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Norway, and Finland)
- OCs are allowed but it MUST go with the theme.
- Please don’t all pick the Viking Era. As interesting as it is, there’s more to their history than that. Like the Bloody Danes and the Winter War between Finland and Russia. And it doesn’t have to be a specific event it can include a person that made an imprint on either of their histories.
- More than one entries are allowed but one only will take the prize. :)
- Other versions of the Nordics are allowed. (For example: Nekotalia, 2p!Hetalia, Chess!Hetalia, whatever is in the Hetalia fandom and has its own verse, you’re allowed to use. Just put the universe the characters are in the the description please. :))
- When you have completed your entry, please place it in the Contest Folder, and if you can’t do that, just message :iconshadowhachia: about it.
- Be creative! Do crossovers or even parodies! Do whatever you think people won’t do and make it as original! If we find out that what you’re doing is copied or something of the like, you’ll be banned from the contest. So please don’t make us do it!! >.<

For Drawings:
- Noridic pairings are allows
- Canon x OCs are preferred but are also optional.
- If you used a reference from another source, give credit! :D

For Fanfics:
- X Readers are preferred or X OCs
- You can use Nordic pairings if you’d like

A Contest Entry – Reader x Norway
Near Trondheim, Norway – October 1942
The word was shifting through the houses and the bleak approach of winter was making it all the grimmer. Despite the fact the Nazis had already destroyed Telavåg and sent its population (those that survived) to an interment camp, there seemed to be no trusted between them and the Norwegian locals. In some ways they were right – the Norwegians didn’t like them but punishing a whole village was atrocious, something at first they’d believed was just the fate of the eastern countries that had been occupied. But now the shooting of two German policemen, not to mention its use in Oslo for a brief period, had encouraged Josef Terboven, the Reichkommissar of Norway, to impose Martial law on Trondheim – at least that was the rumour.

The snow crunched under Norway’s boots as he walked through it. He kicked a few chunks aside and sighed as the rest turned a grayish color from the dirt under his boots. Almost every inch of pure white snow on the sidewalk had turned grey because of many people walking over it with dirty shoes and boots. It was like a sign; everything that symbolized innocence was stained by the impurity of others' actions. It was incredible how cruel this world had become.
His breath fogged up in front of him as he walked through the cold. His cheeks flushed red as the frigid wind bit at his face. Luckily, he was wearing a scarf to protect his neck. His head was covered by a comfortable black hat that clung to his flaxen colored locks. A few strands of hair escaped the hold of his hat and were blown against his face.
Norway took a right turn and made his way up to a familiar porch. He breathed in deeply, preparing himself for what was to come, and knocked on the door with a gl

What we're looking for~

The judges aren't looking for the next Picasso or Stephen King. We're looking for someone who is able to express themselves through their chosen art form. This DOES NOT mean that the 'best looking' picture, or 'best written' fan fiction will automatically be chosen, it means that we'll take each person's skills and talents into account as well as the final outcome.

If your curious which characters the judges like… well… simply put, we like almost all of them~!

Let me start with a small explanation:

I am probably a rather rare case of a fanfiction and reader insert lover whose native language is not English and who can understand 5 languages without a problem. And this is the reason why I probably notice things in fanfictions that most others don't. This is why I want to try and make you see what I experience and feel as a reader when I encounter foreign expressions and language in fanfictions.

I hope this entry will help you a little bit if you are unsure if you should use any foreign expressions or not and how I think they should be treated. This, of course, is solely my own opinion, so please keep it in mind. I have absolutely nothing against your own opinions on this topic.

I really like fanfiction but I especially love Hetalia-related reader inserts because of the foreign languages and the many things I learn while reading them. I think it's pretty awesome that I now can say "I love you" in more than 10 different languages, I know that "ciao bella" is just a way of Italian men to greet a random woman in the street and if someone tells me "brutto porco!" I'll definitely turn around and give that person a hard punch in the face.

And since we are speaking about the use of foreign languages in literature I might as well add this little fact: Foreign expressions are not only common in Hetalia fanfictions, even famous authors use them from times to times. I know at some point the French was very popular among the Russian writers and we can find some French words in German literature as well!
Of course, when an author decides to use other languages he or she needs to be extra careful, for it is difficult to put the desired sentence or expression in the right place.

Sometimes it may cause more trouble than it's worth in the end.

To make it simple, I would proceed as follows:

Step 1: Ask yourself if it's really necessary to use another language in your fanfiction.
Step 2: If so, ask yourself another question: What do you want to achieve by doing so?

I think it is actually very important to think of the purpose instead of just throwing in a sentence or two because you feel like it might look good. You might want to keep your chosen character "in character" or simply make the character seem more authentic to the reader by occasionally making him say something in his native language. But remember that your reader might not get the meaning if you overdo it or use too exotic words. I would try and use widely known words or make it easy to understand them from the context, like in the following example:

Example Nr.1

World Meeting. Our beloved France enters the scene with his famous rose in hand and a wide smile upon his face. Suddenly he spots England and Germany on the other end of the room. Of course, being a sophisticated person, he instantly decides to approach the two gentlemen and greets his neighbours politely.
"Bonjour mes amis," he says happily, "isn't it a wonderful day? C'est trs beau!"
"Ja, indeed." Germany replies with a curt nod.

/Explanation:
We all know that France is very proud of his language. (Without a doubt he has every right to feel so strongly about his beautiful language! He is so proud that he prefers to use his language as much as possible, and Germany, as his neighbour, knows very well that it can be quite difficult sometimes. (Just cross the border of France and you will see that he will try to speak solely in French to you.) Of course, since it is a World Meeting and we readers probably don't know much French, France has to use English in order to be understood but due to his character he cannot help but add a few French words here and there. Even Germany slips a little and says "ja" instead of "yes".

These small expressions can be easily understood from the context, they keep our dear France very much in character and make the conversation seem very lovely in my eyes.

Of course, as an author you might want to put in whole sentences in order to achieve other effects.
You might want to confuse the reader because it's important for the plot. For example, your main character suddenly finds him- or herself in a foreign country and does not get a single word! Here I would make sure that the reader can at least read the foreign sentence. After all, there is no point in writing something in Russian when the reader cannot read it and understand how it sounds.

Personally I think it's important to be able to make the reader see and hear the things written in your text. To someone how has no idea how to read something like that: "Россия тебя любит" it's just a weird combination of unknown symbols.

To avoid unnecessary interruptions you can try and describe the said sentence indirectly, this will also save you the trouble of having to use an online translator and probably mess up the sentence if you don't speak the language you want to use.
I'll give you this example in order to show you want I mean by interruption of the flow.

Example Nr. 2: (reader insert)

After recollecting his thoughts, Iceland is about to say something important. The poor boy looks like he wants to suppress the urge to flee, to hide himself under a mattress and never come out. Then suddenly, he bursts out: "g elska ig meira en nokku, g vil a giftast mr!"

/ This is what I see in the text. And this is what it looks like to the silly me who does not understand Icelandic: "%hAJH&)-(")$%!"=?/(&"%/!&p/(!"&/%/("/e(--ha8!"

There are three options from here on:

1.

Luckily, I find a footnote or this convenient symbol:"*" which indicates that I can find the translation at the bottom of the page or in the author's description. And because I am a stubborn person, I scroll down in order to find the translation although I would probably rather prefer to read the scene until the end. But, after all, I do want to understand what was said in the sentence! Of course I will find the translation, but if I am not careful enough I might accidentally read the end of the story. That's quite a problem to me because I do not like to spoil the fun for myself. After I found the translation I have to go back; sadly, the mood of the scene is ruined by the small interruption.

2.

I find the translation right after the sentence. Sometimes I ask myself if it is necessary to use the foreign language at all since 1) I cannot read the original sentence anyway and 2) I just read the translation. This might be typical of me, though, and other people might think otherwise.

3.

Sadly, I find no translation. Well, too bad for me!

My suggestion:

This is a reader insert the reader shall identify himself or herself with the character in the fanfiction. Again, you can try and find a way around the direct use of another language. Something like this sounds nice in my opinion: "His next words were spoken in his native language, they contained such strong emotions and it was evident that they held much importance in them." I'm sure that you can do better than me with my poor writing skills! ;) At least you can definitely be sure that you made no mistakes while translating the desired sentence via online dictionary. In my example, I could not even read the sentence and as a reader I don't have any idea how that sounds anyway.
Just try and think if you really need the sentence and if it's important for the story or not! Less is sometimes more!

Example Nr. 4: Why Google Translate is not always the best option

We all know it, but we still use it anyway.
Yes, we all know that online translators are not an ideal option but there is no way around them in most cases if you do want to use some foreign words. This is actually quite funny if you happen to understand the foreign language as well. Now, most people might not notice that the translated sentence is quite wrong unless when I show you how it is supposed to sound:

Let's say Germany is saying this to Italy: "Italy, you are supposed to work instead of having a siesta!"

What Google Translate tells me: "Italien, soll man arbeiten, anstatt eine Siesta!"

How it sounds if I translate it back to English: Italy, should one work, instead of a siesta!"

How that sentence should sound in German: Italien, du sollst arbeiten anstatt eine Siesta zu machen!"

I'll be honest here, Germany sounds as German as my grandma who is Russian and barely speaks any German!

And I cannot help but put another small opinion of mine: What I often see is that many, many expressions, for example in Russian, do not fit into the sentence at all. It sounds weird, combined with the English. I think that sometimes a simple "my sunflower, you are my most important treasure" sounds better than an experiment with mixing the Russian expression with the English one. It may just be me because I can read both things and in the end the sound is not that nice than it could be.

That aside, I think it's totally okay if your grammar is not perfect, my English is not that perfect, either. But maybe you should just try and find someone who looks over your sentence if you need to use it in your fanfiction. I understand that it might not be easy to find someone who understands Icelandic but I would at least try.
After all, you could see it as a part of a learning process!
Everybody can use Google Translate but not everybody has the strength to research well and try and find the best solution. There are sites where you can post questions, too. It may take a while, but at least in the end you can be especially proud of your result.

Now, the last thing I would like to mention is something which depends on you:

The correct spelling of foreign words.

This should not be a problem if you use a decent translator and copy and paste the words into your text. But, for some reason, I sometimes see the same mistakes here and there. If you do decide to use the words, then don't forget to add the correct accents! Be careful with Spanish and French words and don't forget that in German the nouns are written with capital letters. If you are careful and copy and paste from the online dictionary then it should be okay. It's really not difficult at all =)

And finally, as a German-speaking country, Prussia would like to give you some awesome advice on frequently used German words and expressions that some people tend to spell wrong:

:iconyayprussiagilbirdplz::iconsaysplz: NOW LISTEN TO THE AWESOME ME!

"I love you." "Ich liebe dich." (take notice that you write it with "ie", as well as the word "love"-"Liebe", be awesome and don't swap the "i" and "e", otherwise your result might sound quite weird!:iconprussianoesplz:)
"my woman" "meine Frau" (note that you write it with an "e" because the word "woman" has a female gender) Prussia would also like to add: "This expression usually refers to a married woman, it's the same as if you would say 'my wife'. So be careful because it sounds very possessive!"

:iconprussiasmirkplz::iconsaysplz: Of course, being the awesome me, I cannot help but suggest the following expression:
"Se" - "cutie", although the awesome me thinks that your favourite expression suits me well!

:iconyayprussiaplz::iconsaysplz: You can always ask the awesome me if you are unsure about your German sentences or expressions, the awesome me will gladly help! But now I have to take care of Gilbird, so please excuse my awesomness!

Now, you may ask yourself: 'Why should I care?' especially because most people would not notice the difference anyway.
It's actually very simple:
I assume, no, actually I am sure that as a Hetalia lover you respect other countries and cultures, right? If that is the case then surely you respect their languages as well. It would make people like me very happy. I like it when someone uses German in a fanfiction including Germany and actually cares enough to spell the words in a correct way.
Also, a fanfiction is also a piece of art and, just like a precious painting, it should be treated as such. I would try to make it as perfect as possible before posting it and showing it off to the world. Mistakes and wrong grammar are totally okay, hey, we're all humans, after all, but that doesn't mean that we cannot at least try. We are all lazy and I know that sometimes an author has the urge to post his or her fanfiction as fast as possible. But never forget that your readers will appreciate it when you try and give your best!
Thank you for reading this,
Have a good day!

Hong Kong was so excited. Today, him and Iceland had scheduled a date at an indoor pool. When they arrived, both were delighted to find noone was there. It would be just the two of them. Hong Kong blushed when Iceland stripped to his swimming trunks. His legs were so slender, and he was a muscular individual. As they both jumped in the pool, Hong Kong took his opportunity to try something. He slipped his hand to Iceland's ass, groping it under the water.

"H-Hong Kong!!!" Iceland exclaimed, his face becoming covered with blush. Hong Kong put his chin to Iceland's shoulder.

"Don't you love me?"

"Well, y-yes but, uuhn~! S-Stop that, Hong Kong!!!" Iceland said. Hong Kong swam in front of Iceland and kissed him passionately, swirling his tongue around his and letting there saliva drip down his face. "W-Wait, Hong Kong!" Iceland cried. "I can't I'm...I'm a virgin...you know...there..."

"Oh, well...I suppose we don't have to-"

"No, It's not that." Iceland quickly assured him. "Hong Kong...please...be...Gentle." Hong Kong's face lit up as he began to kiss Iceland's neck, nipping and sucking. "Ahhhn~!!" Iceland moaned loudly. Hong Kong brutally abused his neck, fueled by his cute Virgin moans. Hong Kong began kissing his chest as he swam with him to the poolside. He removed Iceland's swimming trunks, grabbing his member and kissing his chest more. Moving to his lower torso, Hong Kong kissed and sucked passionately. Iceland moaned louder and louder. Hong Kong licked Iceland's member, taking it into his mouth, sucking all of Iceland's naughty juices. Iceland moaned and groaned in pleasure. "Ooohh~!!" Hong Kong pinned Iceland to the wall and removed his own boxers.

"I'll go slow, ok?" He assured Iceland as he put his member at Iceland's entrance. "Ready?"

"Y-Yes..."

As Hong Kong slowly entered Iceland, he cried out in pain.

"Ahhhn~!!! That hurts~!!!"

"Shh, It won't hurt so much if you relax." Hong Kong continued to enter, inch by inch, Iceland's eyes formed tears of pain and pleasure. He looked over his shoulder.

"I-Is it in...???" Iceland asked shakily.

"Mhm...now bear with me, alright?" Hong Kong slowly pulled out and then moved back in a little faster then before. Iceland practically screamed in pain and pleasure. Hong Kong pulled back and thrust inside. "Uuuuhnff~!!" He moved faster and faster, Iceland's moans becoming less pained and more pleasured as they both approached their climax. "Uuhhhhhhhn~!! Al-Almost there~!"

"Hon-Hong Kong~!!!!!!!" Iceland cried out as he let himself release. Hong Kong did the same, releasing himself inside Iceland, filling him with all his pleasure. As he pulled out he kissed Iceland. "I love you."

"I love you too."

Gabo by Quadraro

The Spectre of Magical Realism Comes to TexasGabriel García Márquez

•••

When he died last April at age 87, he had for a half century been a candidate for “world’s greatest living writer.”

Author of short stories and novels, including his masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude, he received the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 1972 and the Nobel Prize for Literature in Literature in 1982. He was a fierce critic of the United States and had a friend in admirer Fidel Castro, with whom he sometimes shared notes on his works-in-progress. He was banned as a “subversive” from entering the U.S. for several decades until President Clinton lifted the travel ban in 1995. But great art always has a way of prevailing over petty politics in the end. It was announced this week that Márquez’s archives of extant manuscripts and other writing-related items will become a part of the prestigious Ransom Center at the University of Texas in Austin. His papers will be in good company with those of James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway and William Faulkner.

Márquez was the creator of a literary style that came to be emulated by many other writers throughout Latin America.

It’s called “magic realism,” reflecting the surreal quality of lives lived in the perpetually unstable and volatile nations south of the U.S border. When life so often balances between life and death on the edge of a razor, passions become more intense, fear is a constant companion and life itself takes on a dream quality more palpable than actual reality. This is why “Gabo” is so beloved—for being able to capture this in his tales. His characters’ lives are “realist” narratives of the brutalities they must endure to survive, yet ancestors speak from their graves and moments of magic occur with no indication that they might be supernatural, hallucinated or even odd. For Márquez and his Latin brethren, the surreal running memory in their heads that is their life is as “real” as any documentarian’s or journalist’s “facts.”

Evaluating one’s life in terms of an ever-shifting personal story narrative made up of memories interwoven with dreams and fantasies is something that rubs North Americans the wrong way.  But it is the glorious and most human way to perceive one’s existence in this cruel and disappointing world of serial tragedies, according to fans of Márquez and his magical literary world. Márquez was a writer who painted tantalizing portraits and beautiful if dangerous landscapes with his words – and in a way that many will continue to be inspired by and try to emulate (some quite successfully, like Isabel Allende with her “House of the Spirits”).  But there will forever be only one “Gabo,” the recognized heart and soul of Latin American literature (and dream culture).  Rest assured, his recent death won’t keep him from stopping by for a visit from time to time.

  • Mood: Rant

Warning: Swearing ahead. Lots and lots of swearing. You have been warned.

Okay guys.

I am starting to get sick and tired of the bullshit that is going around the internet, especially on FaceBook, DA and YouTube.
Now, I don't have FaceBook or YouTube, but I have seen the comments and stuff on them both that make my heart break - and on DA too.

Just recently, I was going through one of my watcher's galleries (I will not post their name here for confidential reasons), and I had a look at one of their drawings. Now, this was a good, perfectly fine picture. But when I scrolled down to the comments, I found a very disgusting one (again, I will not post it for confidential reasons). Of course, the first thing I did was go to the next deviation because I was highly repulsed, and guess what? I found another dick who thought it was alright post a rude, hurtful comment on the other picture.

I'm sorry, but do people seriously think that this is okay? Do they really believe that posting these kind of comments is perfectly alright? I THINK NOT. These poor people that are receiving these must feel terrible! Now, I am fortunate enough to NOT have received these kinds of comments (although I have a feeling I will soon), but I can certainly empathise with the people who have and who do.

So I just want to say this to anyone who reads this: If you have an issue with someone, consult it in private, or better yet, don't pick a fight in the first place. If you see something you don't like, don't say anything. Just walk away, close the tab and forget it existed. There is no need to be a bitch and a fucking dick about it and make people feel like shit with your hate-filled comments (if you can even call them comments in the first place D:<). This is CYBER-BULLYING. If you think it's okay to say to a perfectly fine picture or piece of writing, or video or post that for some reason you don't like, "This is fucking crap. Go and die, you whore," I have one thing to say to you: GTFO and stay out. You have NO right to tell anyone that. If you want to make other people's lives miserable, keep this in mind: THERE WILL ALWAYS BE SOMEONE WHO WILL GIVE YOU HELL IF YOU DO, and I am one of those people. So suck it up, leave and don't be a fucking bully. The internet is meant to be a place for people to share their love of or for something, and it's supposed to be a place where people can meet others, be friends and get along, and right now, that's not happening, because there is always a group of people that think it's okay (and sometimes funny) to make other people cry. I have no respect for these kind of people and I will be astonished if anyone did.

If you guys agree with what I have stated above, feel free to repost this on your own journals and share it around. I, for one, will not tolerate this kind of behaviour! It's rude, it's mean, it shouldn't be happening. Also, if I get a comment along the lines of "You don't know what the fuck you're talking about," FUCK YOU. FUCK YOU TO HELL. I have friends who have received these kind comments and I will not stand by and watch them getting hurt by morons and idiots and meanies and ugh! SERIOUSLY THEY HAVE FEELINGS TOO YOU SICK FUCKS. LEAVE THEM ALONE AND GO AND DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE.

It's time for us, ALL OF US, to stand up to these fuckers and bullies and get rid of them once and for all. It's time for them to be aware that we won't tolerate their rudeness and horribleness. Let us take a stand and make this world a beautiful place to live. I think everyone deserves at least that much.
