When they first met, James Potter and Sirius Black didn't expect to be lifelong friends. They were just two boys sitting on the Hogwarts Express, shoved into the same compartment by some rowdy fifth years. Each of them kept to himself, and it wasn’t until James spotted Sirius’s broomstick advertisement booklet, tossed carelessly onto the seat, that the two of them began talking.
"What team?" James asked enthusiastically, pointing at the Quidditch players clutching world-class brooms on the cover.
Sirius snorted, glancing at the booklet and then to James. "Chudley Cannons, of course. I just went to see them, they were bloody amazing! You?"
James stared at Sirius, his eyes wide in amazement. "Same, my dad loves to take me to their matches! Gonna try out for the house team?"
Just like that, the two were friends.
When James joined Sirius at the Gryffindor table, they grinned

Hallmarks of Lazy Writing
ShadowedAcolyte here for projecteducate's Prose Basics Week. I decided to tackle "lazy writing" as a topic, because they always say "write what you know" and boy, do I know laziness. Then I realized there were dozens of ways to be a lazy writer, so I heroically narrowed the scope of my article down to one broad topic: readymades. After talking about what a "readymade" is, I'll explain why they should be avoided in writing prose*, and I'll finish with some tips to help you avoid using them yourself.
Before we go any further, I should note that the term is not a technical one. It is the word I was taught to use to identify a set of common problems with weak writing, so it's the word I use. I hope you'll find this article helpful, but it's not a textbook.
*I say "prose" because it's Prose Basics Week, but readymades infect poetry as well. If you're more a poet than a prose

My deviantART StoryYeah, I know, I said I wasn't going to do this, but everyone else has me all warm and fuzzy and crap so why not. And yeah, this is going to break my personal "two weeks between major features" thing, but I don't care.My deviantART Story1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
So, I've flirted with dA on and off for years. I found it the first time when I was in high school in the early 2000s, but it was never more than a place to host my stuff then. I found it again in college, mostly to help me wrangle all the cosplay pics I was sorting through trying to find myself in them. I never hung out here.
Then in 2012 my life turned upside down. I left my life behind to move back in with my family. I was really low. Yes, I was that low, for those of you who get the reference. The only comfort I had being free from the circumstances I had been in before was that I could watch and listen to and read whatever the heck I wanted. I had been hearing about My Little Pony on Reddit, and resolved to try it. I fell in love. And the Bronies over on
Guide to spambotsAlright guys. So I regularly read the site updates and a common feature in the comments section is the fact that some people feel that spambots are not given enough attention by the staff. But while I was reading these comments, I remembered what happened to a couple friends of mine: they didn't realize the comments they were being left were being done so by spambots.Guide to spambots2 years ago in Deviant Events More Like This
So I'm going to try and give you a few tips on what spambots typically do, and try to give you a few ways to avoid them.
A spambot can come at you from any number of accounts named any number of things. You probably won't get the same message from the same bot twice. The most common bot going around right now is one that leaves a comment that looks like this:
Nice!!! Check this out: [link]
Don't click on it. If you have good virus-blocking software, it might save you. But not everyone has such a thing. So just click on the little pencil icon o

This article is an exploration of a common question on DeviantART in the Literature community; "How do I get more views?" If you read all of this you win a pony.
Lately there has been a lot of discussion around the site about ways to expand the literature community and the visibility of literature on the site. It has been noted that a lot of people believe that site changes by the DeviantART team will help them get more attention for their work. It has also been noted in the past that when new features are instigated (such as more html, better thumbnails and stash) that people often interpret whether or not they have a direct positive effect on their own views as a way of telling if the new feature is worthwhile or not.
It has been suggested that the community and individuals therein should themselves take more responsibility for creating opportunities and maximising poten
How To Be A Productive WriterHow To Be A Productive WriterHow To Be A Productive Writer1 year ago in Literature Features More Like This
You know the type: the writer who submits something new everyday, who floods your inbox with new poems and prose pieces that they somehow had time to write since the last time you logged in to dA. How do they do it? Are there more than 24 hours in their day? Do they have chunks of spare time that you don't? Super discipline? Magic powers?
It may seem like a strange and mystical phenomenon, but believe it or not, that person is probably just as busy as you are. Even more unbelievable: you can become that person, too. It doesn't take magic powers or a high tolerance to lack of sleep or loads of spare time, but it does take discipline. Ready? Okay.
Actually, not quite ready yet. You know when you're really on a roll, when you're writing and writing and suddenly... you stop to check Facebook? Yeah. Whether it be Facebook or email or the refrigerator or deviantART, we want to get rid of distractions. Move to a distraction-free ar
Feature O' Friends #1Hello, one and all!Feature O' Friends #12 years ago in Personal More Like This
Time for our first issue of Feature O' Friends!! This series is aimed at developing and nurturing community spirit by allowing members to suggest a friend to be featured in the next issue! Those who suggest a friend will also have their art featured as well.
Interested? Come on, we'd love to see who you're willing to suggest! But before you do any suggesting, here are some guidelines and steps you should take in order to participate.
First, think of a friend who you think deserves a feature, and write up to 5 sentences why you think your friend should be featured. Give other members a reason to check your friend out!
Next, choose two deviations from their gallery. Choose the ones you love, or the ones you think deserve the most attention. Get the thumb codes ("") of these deviations, and add them into your suggestion.
After that, grab two deviations from your gallery

With a good variety of mediums; Photography and Digital Art, with the images presented in a rather simple yet effective way. I would love to see Milena featuring more artists in her journal in the future! So for that she'll receive a 1 Month Premium Membership to enhance her journal and continue doing so
What I love about her feature is that she selected specifically deviations with not many faves to promote, people is always complaining only the already famous receive attention, but not

My deviantART StoryI inhabited deviantART for eight wonderful years now (has it really been so long?) Come and let me share some memories with you!My deviantART Story1 year ago in Art Features More Like This
My husband first introduced me to dA eight years ago. We were looking at various fantasy art pieces and he mentioned some site I had never heard of, a little place named ... deviantART. I was in love. This is one of the first pieces I favorited.
A few years later Avatar, the Last Airbender came out. I was quite the fangirl. This picture is done by one (of many) of my favorite fan artists, Isaia.
During my time here, I come to appreciate other galleries that I never really noticed, like Still Life.
Anyone who follows me knows my extreme fangirlism over the Seekers, so I had to include this piece. It's pretty self-explanatory.
This piece of fan fiction represents my favorite work

Heavy BreathingI'm going to shamelessly copy-pasta from my Tumblr~Heavy Breathing1 year ago in Personal More Like This
My birthday was on Monday
Which was indeed a super splendid birthday and we did some fun stuff.
We also prepared for TODAY, where a plane was supposed to take us to Cyprus where we would got married and party for three days.
Bbbuuuuttt yesterday, right when we got out of the house for a birthday dinner with my family, our flight agent called and told us that, together with many other flights, our flight got postponed because of our country situation.
Me and Yoav are pretty much in this weird depression mode like you see in some mangas/animes…. you know that kind:
instead of getting married, we had to wake up in the morning with the lovely alarms going off and some Iron Dome explosions in the background.
What a bummer in the ass.
BUT THEN i come online to baaawww
and i see all the birthday wishes and birthday gifts around

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Guardians of the Galaxy everyone. For those who are about to watch it - you're in for a treat, regardless.
Now, to share with you some tips.
Two extra Screens - Super handy when you can display reference photos from your personal archives for your projects. As you can see here I'm focusing solely on Star-Lord (aka Peter Quill) for the moment, he is after all the focal point. It's totally okay to use a lot of references for your finished illustration - the more visual info you have to make a convincing illustration the better. Thanks to :iconchemb0t: for inspiring me to get those extra screens where otherwise I would have never have done so on my own. Also :iconyuski: here is another example of how I do my stuff using the two screens to it's full advantage.
