Workshopping with Rasp: Part 1 of 3Here it is, as promised. Keep in mind that even though I do not have formal training as a writer, these are the things I keep in mind when writing my characters. I have had varying levels of success here at dA and you are free to use my ideas or not. I'm not claiming to know it all, the below is not gospel and it's not guaranteed. But you never know.Workshopping with Rasp: Part 1 of 33 years ago in Literature Features More Like This

How to Create Compelling Characters
I can't speak for everyone but I read for compelling characters. If the characters really move me, the plot can be as thin as it wants; though it's not always easy to have characters carry the whole thing if nothing is happening.
Where do we find compelling characters? In books, of course, but they're obviously not confined to books. Compelling characters in movies are just as important. Unless you're doing improv, plays and movie

Astrophotography- Some Of Your Questions AnsweredI have got to a point on this site that I am literally being inundated with questions about how I do some of my photos. I simply do not have time to answer them all in full individually anymore. It is seriously restricting the free time that I have to pursue this hobby and take those pictures that have become so popular (both on here and elsewhere). So for my well being and hopefully to the benefit of those who ask me so many questions, I am doing this write up.Astrophotography- Some Of Your Questions Answered3 years ago in Personal More Like This
Before I get into some questions though, I want to make a few things clear. I have spent a lot of time and money on trying to learn as much as I can to better myself with this style of photography. I love all forms of astrophotography and I really think I have found my niche. I hope to one day soon start making back a bit of that money I have spent. So I am not going to just reveal everything I have worked so hard to learn. What I am going t
Photoshop shortcuts making you forget PhotoshopInstead of a feature, this time I'd like to introduce you to some shortcuts in Photoshop that really help me save time and a lot of my nerves.Photoshop shortcuts making you forget Photoshop2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
I make use of all of these shortcuts (and a couple more), so even if for some of you these look too complicated, they give you power over Photoshop. By employing these, I don't have to leave the canvas to go search for a function in the depths of Photoshop's many menus.
While I think that these shortcuts can be used universally in all versions of Photoshop, I can only account for CS4 to CS6, maybe CS3.
If you've been frustrated by Photoshop's inability of undoing steps with Ctrl+Z, here's your answer.

You can change the colour surrounding your canvas by right clicking there. I use b
PE Feedback: How to Give a CritiqueHOW TO GIVE A CRITIQUEPE Feedback: How to Give a Critique2 years ago in Personal More Like This
It's a great thing that you want to critique other deviant's works and help them improve their skills through your constructive feedback. By critiquing fellow deviant's works, you are developing your critical thought and vision and thus, developing yourself as an artist. However, critiquing is not all about pointing out what others did wrong. As ChewedKandi has pointed out in 'How To: Critiquing Artwork' "a critique is giving your opinion in a constructive manner about a subject - be it a piece a music, a piece of art, the meal you've just ate and so on."
That's the main point of this article: to share a few pointers on how to give a quality critique while providing links to a compilation of useful guides that focus on this very same topic.
Introduction: Let's start!
First things first! You've come across a piece of art that caught your attention and

Welcome to Feedback Week! This week is being brought to you by a team of very devious deviants over at FeedbackFrenzy.
In January of this year, the marvelous Beccalicious led a Critique Week in which we learned about many of the critique groups here on deviantART and also the essentials of giving and receiving critique for various media. In case you missed it, here are a few of the fantastic articles that were shared that week:
Do you really want critique? The basics of giving critique Finding critique on dA The community and critique
So, for our week, we wanted to take Critique Week a step further and put the skills we learned to use! We have developed some

Life on Mars
As the next planet over that visiting wouldn’t be all that difficult (Venus being way too hot), especially after our trips to our own moon, Mars has always held a special attraction for our science fiction writers and illustrators. In fact, the comic book and the paperback novel are media in which fiction and art have formed a bond like no other in which the exterior presentation (the cover art) for the artform itself (the sci-fi novel’s text) is often of equal importance, creating a combined force, in serving the narrative. Mars may ultimately become a forward military outpost defending against invading aliens, or prime real estate for hu

Ladies and Gentlemen
After almost 18 months, we're finally proud to announce
The Grand release of Omnimo 6.0.
And likely, the last major update
In the lifecycle of this project.
Life's circumstances have a tendency to change rapidly, and indeed, both of us (me and Xyrfo) had experienced rather significant changes which kept us from activelly working on this project. We started it as we were teenagers, but we've grown up and our new lives have begun. Perhaps Omnimo is a tribute to this transition; a hobbyist project that had become more serious with every release. We put our faith in the hope that our efforts were not in vain, and that the long wait had been worth it.
In our previous releases, we hesitated making the changelog out of fear that we won't cover everything that we've worked on. Incidentally, it's also the case for Omnimo 6.0 - we've improved it so much, I

Reading them has helped me a lot in the past couple of days. Whether that be from making new friends, or just knowing that someone else in the world feels the way I do. Tips for smooth clean line artHi,Tips for smooth clean line art2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Is your line art shaky, wobbly, sloppy, fat, uneven or pixelated? The subject of clean line art comes up a lot so I've gathered together a number of tips from various DA members that may help you improve your line art. Some of the techniques described below may contradict other techniques described below so you may want to experiment and decide what works best for you. Most of these assume that you have a digital tablet. (Make sure your tablet drivers have been installed correctly. If your cursor is behaving erratically it may indicate a problem with your tablet or drivers.) Some posts have been edited for brevity or spelling:
"I developed my own technique. And it works quite well for me. It raised my Lineart cleanliness from 24% to 98%, yeah, really. Here is how I do it digitally when I'm not using a traditional sketch:
First a rough sketch, and I isolate it in its own layer then set its opacity to 50 or something near that value.
Then on the second layer

All of us have heard about feedback events during our time on deviantArt. Many of us have participated in them, while others have declined to do so for various reasons. Some of these reasons include fear of receiving critique on one's own work, fear of being attacked for critiquing someone's work, fear of not knowing what to say, and feeling inadequate to critique a deviation from someone who is perhaps more skilled than we are--especially if the deviation is created using a medium to which we are unaccustomed.
We especially want to focus on this last reason.
Here is a conversation that we had recently in a dA chat room (names have been changed):
Us: We are planning a cross-medium, dA-wide critique event for Project Educate!! Will you participate?
DeviantX: Hmm. I don't know.
Us: Why not?
DeviantX: I'm a photo
