3.) Remaining questions from in the poll + personal stuff
My way of planing and working on a project
1.) How do you choose the pictures you want to work with and what do you have to consider?
First of all, it´s important for me, to ,,be in the mood" for a cerain project, except when it is a commission.
I prefer stitching pictures of certain series (games, manga or anime) or it happends, that I see a picture here on DA and sometimes I just know that I want to work with it (with permission of the artist of course).
It´s important for me, to improve and so I mostly choose pictures, which will be harder in the making due to a huge amount of details.
While choosing the pictures it´s necessary, to work with Hi-Res images with proper lighting conditions, due to my way of creating my patterns and using the colors.
2.)How do you create your own Cross Stitch patterns and what program do you use?
That´s the most asked question and I´ll have to clear some things up as good as possible.
People are used, to work with Cross Stitch patterns, like/or similar to this one fav.me/d4v3ydq
I have to say, that my patterns aren´t anything like this.
I don´t use a special ,,pattern program" for creating my patterns.
All I use, is a simple ,,Photoshop Elements" version to create a pattern and a program like the ,,GIMP", to open the finished pattern file and work with it.
My patterns are not printable, nor do they contain any ,,grid" or descriptions for the colors being used.
I do the following, to create a Cross Stitch pattern:
- I decide on the final size of the ,,pattern", considering the amount of pixels in the final picture (let´s say, I want to create a Cross Stitch with the size 19,5cm x 14,5 cm, then I want to get a 150 pix x 110 pix picture in the end).
- I take the picuture, I want to work with and cut it (cut tool), so I can get my prefered size in the end.
- To get my prefered size, I reduce the size of the picture itself and make sure.
- Then, I reduce the colors of the picture and decide on my color palette. I have to do this on my own and choose the colors like I think they would fit (I have a wide range of colors I choose from everytime).
- What´s left, is a tiny, strong pixelized picture which I use, by using the ,,zoom" in GIMP or any other program which supports the zoom.
- I work with the single pixels in the final pic through ,,zooming in". One pixel = one stitch on the Cross Stitch fabric.
My way of making a pattern is NOT perfect and therefore, I can´t do any Tutorial for this process, since I have to improve a lot and even change/ re-paint parts of the picture myself without the help of Photoshop.
I use these patterns, for over 2 years now and everytime I create something new, I have to use different or even new methods, to create the pattern.
It´s not a simple way, it´s just my way, since I have to admit that I don´t want to use a pattern programm (call me stubborn).
If you wanna use this method, then be willingly to experiment, like I have to be. It takes some time, to learn this and as stated above, even I can learn from every new created pattern
People which like to get good patterns out of photos, screenshots and other images can still use a good programm for creating Cross Stitch patterns.
These programms support the function, to tell you which colors you have to use and give you the option, to get a printable version of this picture.
3.)How do you know, which colors you have to use?
Nothing tells me, how to use which colors in a proper manner. I decide that myself and choose the colors, like I think they fit in the picture.
I use several different kinds of brownish, beige and light ,,rose" tones, depending on the picture itself.
5.)How do you work in general?
When I finished my pattern and got everything I need together, I start with using one Cross Stitch thread color, stitching as far as I can go within the frame: i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h…
After that, I try to stitch one important part of the picture, to have an ,,orientation" for later. It´s most often an eye or even both, in case I´m stitching a person: i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h…
Then, I add other colors around the already stitched parts and continue doing so: i1106.photobucket.com/albums/h…
I always finish the part of the picture, which fit´s into the frame fav.me/d4sapzw
before I continue to change the position of the frame and stitch the next part of the picture.
6.)What supplies do you use?
I work with these supplies:
- Fabric: 20 count aida ( 20 stitches per inch. Small squares) Pure white.
- Wooden, round frame for Cross Stitching (no stand). Stitching with a frame makes the work more neat and clean. Stitching without a frame, drives that woman here crazy.
- Needle (obvious!) It´s no needle for Cross Stitching which is bigger and thicker then normal needles. I use a ,,sewing" needle, to keep my stitches clean.
- Anchor Sticktwist Cross Stitch threads (100% cotton, 8m).
- My Laptop to read the pattern.
What I can do for you and what I don´t
1.)I´m totally new to this, do you have any tips for me?
If someone sends me a message and asks for tips and tricks, I glady help out as good as I can.
I can give you tips on how to start, how to handle the whole thing and how to make your works looks more clean and neat. If you send me your pattern, I´ll tell you how an where to start and what to consider.
2.)Can you say something to help me to improve?
Yes, be willingly to work on your abilities. Find out how patient you can be and how far you can go in creating bigger, more realistic works.
Start doing bigger projects, after making some expieriences with smaller ones. Learn how to use the Cross Stitch colors without any help and be happy to try out new things on your own.
Learn it, by doing!
3.)Make me a pattern! I send you the image and my E-Mail adress!
Short answer to this: No.
Long answer: I don´t do any pattern requests, simply because I don´t have the time for that.
I also don´t do payed Cross Stitch pattern Commissions at the moment.
4.)I want the *insert name of finished Cross Stitch work here* pattern, send me!
Personal and especially commissioned works, shall stay ,,unique" and therefore, I don´t give out any patterns, sorry.
5.)List the colors you used for *insert name of finished Cross Stitch here*
Everyone has the right, to keep secrets. That´s one of mine
6.)I want one of your works but don´t have money, how about an Art trade?
I´m currently not open for any art trades because, I have commission work to do.
In case I will be open for art trades, I´ll inform you in my journal.
But, in the meantime, you can send me a message and ask for an art trade and we can talk about one for later.
7.)Do you do commissions?
Yes, I do.
I´m currently closed for commissions, but will inform you in my journal, when I´m open again.
8.)Do you also do commissions, using other colors then your ,,sepia" tones
Not at the moment, no.
I may offer other toned commissions, at the end of the year, but only in ,,monochrome" style.
The reason for that is simply, that know how these tones ,,work with each other" and how to use them in a proper way.
I´m not a fan of working on full colored, photo-realistic pictures. I don´t say, they aren´t good. In fact I love them, but it´s just not what I´m doing, not even for money. It´s not my style
9.)Is there anything that you won't cross-stitch (nudes, etc)?
Technically, I´m open for a wide range of motives, when it comes to commissions. I don´t have any problem, with stitching more ,,adult" stuff as long, as it doesn´t ,,steps over a certain line" (nothing ,,pervert"). Although I wouldn´t stitch any motive, which belongs to another artist and from which I don´t have the permission, to use his/her work.
10.)Your stuff is to expensive! It´s just a Cross Stitch!
Say that again, dear.....
People might think, I sit here, one or two hours a day and maybe two times a week to finish a work. Wrong.
I work several
hours a day, mostly in the evening, on a Cross Stitch. It may be, that I work 5-6 hours a day for 3 weeks, to get a really detailed picture done.
My commissioners get the best I can do and without sounding snooty I have to say, you get clean and proper work which is unique in it´s own way.
In case it´s to much money for you, you´re free to think that, but telling me ,,how expensive my works are", is sort of insulting and you should be aware of that.
It´s not very polite.
Remaining questions : personal stuff and questions from in the poll
1.) Since when do you do Cross Stitching?
I started with Cross Stitching at the age of 14 and continued unitl I was 16. I quit due to the lack of time back then.
First time, I took a needle again was in 2009, when I worked on several smaller pics (mostly Cross Stitch works, based on game sprites).
In the beginning of 2010, I had the wish, to create something bigger and more realistic and so I worked on a method of creating ,,photo-realistic" Cross Stitch patterns and in the end, this work fav.me/d2n7zvp
was the result of my very first try. Until then, I worked hard on my method of creating Cross Stitch patterns on my own and use the colors in a proper manner.
2.)Did someone taught you how to do, what you do?
Cross Stitching itself became a subject in school when I was 14. The way of teaching it was like:
,,Next week, you buy everything you need for Cross Stitching".
And the next week:
,,I show you how to make a Cross on the fabric"...............,,Got it? Beginn"!
So, under the line, I´m self taught all the way
3.)Are you an patient person?
In most of the cases.....no
I can be impatient like a little child, in case I´m really looking forward to something.
People ask me this question, related to my works and how I can finish one big project after another.
The thing is, that I love what I´m doing. I love Cross Stitching and I even found out, that I can´t be 3 days in a row without it
4.) Do you listen to music, while working on your Cross Stitch projects? And if so, which kind?
I couldn´t live without music, so yes I listen to music a lot, while working
I´m a fan of japanese Pop and Rock, especially the music of ,,Gackt" and ,,Rookiez is Punk´D".
Furthermore, I love to listen to several Soundtracks from games or animes. I don´t have a straight music taste and so, I may like several genres of music from different artists.
5.) Who´s your favorite artist?
I can´t name any of the great artists in history, since I´m not that much into this.
If you want to know the artists, which are here on DA, I have to say there are several
My a few of my favortis artists are: jinx-starDahliekaSyrkelltincek-marincekShonnaWhiteK-Koji
.....and many more
6.)What sort of emotions do you like art, to bring up to you?
Art, especially art from the artists I like and adore, make me happy. I love to look though their galleries and adore their style and talent. I have deep respect for artists, which work hard to create awesome works and especially those which are still at a young age.
