Entry for the Riddick: Rule the Dark Contest. To me, one of my favorite aspects of Riddick is the way he rides the edge between good and bad, the dark and the light, so I wanted to capture that idea in my design.
Entry for Riddick Rule The Dark Contest. Edit: Ok, I've been meaning to come back and work on this piece for some time. Now, with the Riddick contest, I've gone and pulled out my tablet again. I sharpened the water droplets and well, pretty much everything, as crisp and as detailed as I'm able at this point in my skill level. Lol my hand is aching but it was worth it I think. I hope you all find my changes to be an improvement too. Time involved with the new changes about 6 hours. Total time… lol no idea…. though at least 3 days of working well into the night. I remember that much. hehe
This is a practice run for me. I'm trying to get better at drawing men realistically. I love the riddick movies and especially his awesome eyes. Digital painting and airbrushing with a bit of digital colored pencil and paint stippling. No photo manipulation or tracing.Hope you all like him.
I wanted to change the lighting and atmosphere from my other entry and go for a far cooler palette and take it to a darker night scene. I have added a lot of additional rain/water details and I hope you like the changes. I wanted to keep the other drawing as I like the striking difference in feel between the two.
I wanted to make an alternate version of my earlier submission. Where my previous rendition was very limited in hues and tonalities (simillar to how the dark is approached in the films) with very deliberate muted colors, I wanted to experiment with a more playful, less contrained, colorful pallette and some harsher lighting for my second submission. I also wanted it to feel more painterly than the previous render. I like both, the previous submission looks more CG, the original has a ton more detail. Where this one feels more like a concept art painting, it's much rougher, but that can also be nice.
Here's my other (original & main) entry: fav.me/d6igk1u
Again, this whole scene exists in 3D. I modeled everything, hand painted the textures, and lit, rendered and composited the scene. I might do an animation in the future.
But first, a nice weekend's break after 2 long, hard weeks of work!
This started out as a rough sketch on black paper using Colored Pencil (my favorite traditional medium), I then transferred it to digital for a complete 'repaint'. Had a lot of fun with this challenge, watched all the movies before working on it to get in the zone!
