Deviant and Art MentionsUpdate: In response to feedback received from the community, we have made some changes, which are detailed in the "New" section of this article.Deviant and Art Mentions2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
A new feature has been launched that's designed to make interacting with others even easier than before! Deviant & Art Mentions are a highly requested feature that send notifications to your Message Center when someone mentions you or your work in a public location on site.
How It Works
When another deviant uses the :dev: or :icon: codes to mention you, or includes one of your deviations in a comment or Journal, a message will appear in the new Mentions section of the Message Center letting you know, and linking you to the location.
These messages are designed to help engagement between deviants, as well as to help further conversation on deviantART, making it easier than before to

Mentions are a new, highly requested feature that makes engaging friends and artists in conversation more dynamic than ever before.
What is a Mention?
A Mention is when a deviant’s username, icon, or artwork is included in a comment or Journal. Mentions create links to the deviants or artwork you include, allowing you to highlight artists and engage deviants with ease.
Links to pages on deviantART can quickly be distinguished by their bold, dark-blue color, while external links are darker and have an arrow indicating you are leaving deviantART.
Deviants you mention are notified in the new Mentions section of the Message Center, making engaging and involving others in conversation a simple, hassle-free experience.
How to Mention
There are four ways to mention a deviant.

The Capture vs. The Pose
portrait of a WW2 vet...
When a subject poses to have his or her photograph taken, the subject tries to project a message about himself or
herself by how he or she “poses”, by the attitude of his or her body language or facial expression.
If the subject is posed by the photographer, the body pulled and prodded into the desired angles,
the facial expression “directed”, it is the photographer who is intending to communicate a message.
In either case, posing or posed, there is undeniably something “false” in the representation.
Seattle deviantMEET Wrap-Up!The Emerald City gave a warm welcome to its deviantART green brethren on Saturday, March 23, with one of the most successful deviantMEETs in history! With over 400 attendees, this event was the second largest deviantMEET ever, and the day couldn't have been more perfect. The Pratt Fine Arts Center had the honor of not only hosting the event but instructing the group on some awesome artistic techniques. The gathering kicked off with deviants mixing and mingling with one another, meeting artists with similar interests. At 1 PM, the screenprinting tutorials began, led by instructors from Pratt. We were surprised to see that our friends at Pratt even created a special screen containing a deviantART logo for attendees to use in their design!

The Fairy Tale, A Lifelong ResonanceA thousand years tradition of scaring children at bedtime continues for children of all ages. The Shape of Things to ComeYou want change on DeviantArt. Everyone here has something they would change. We do listen and, yes, we can’t get everything done. Still, as a community, with any change we change together because we are all here together. The Shape of Things to Come10 months ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
We found major talent to join the DeviantArt team this year to help us assume responsibility for major change and deliver on it. In return, we will be calling on the whole community to exercise its responsibility of continuing to shape DeviantArt into the place where the global undercurrent of creativity feeds the future of popular culture.
DeviantArt is as binary as it is digital in its platform. We serve equally those who produce art as those who need to see art and engage with it. Creating the undercurrent is a function of tools as much as it is a function of community activity. Getting these two to work in unison has always been the secret sauce of DeviantArt – and every recipe for the sauce begins
Celebrate deviantART's 13th Birthday!Celebrate deviantART's 13th Birthday!2 years ago in DeviantArt Announcements More Like This
On the day of your birth, you were likely surrounded by those who loved you, who would lead you through the rough first scary years of life, and who would stand by as you grew into a capable person. As time passed, others may have drifted into your life, and even if you didn't know it, they also nurtured and cared for you in much the same way, helping to shape the person you would become.
When a community like deviantART is born, the same common thread binds its originators and founding members together. Over the years, more and more creative beings drift into its life and strengthen its core every single day, resulting in an exponentially inspirational powerhouse for the sheer fact that they've become a part of it. That nurturing spirit, that inherent support system, that caring community inspires deviantART to grow, and it comes from inside each and every one of you.

What is it about a fictional character first introduced to the public in Great Britain in 1887 that has kept him being reincarnated, with generationally-correct upgrades, over and over again in film and on television? Who is this literary hero whose portrayal over the past century by such past masters as Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett to today’s vanguard talents Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch has inspired such a continuing outpouring of fan appreciation?

A few years ago, deviantART teamed up with several university laboratories across the United States, and we are proud to finally announce the fruits of our efforts. Thanks to recent advancements in neurological science, we're unveiling a revolutionary new platform in artistic creation. It was only after many long frustrating hours of trying to describe what’s so special about the photographs of cweeks...
That I finally realized I was trying to describe something that wasn’t there.
I finally realized that the magical something that sets cweeks’ works apart from others is that his camera disappears. There is no sense as you look at his photos of street scenes and other captures that you are looking through a lens, even the lens of a particularly talented photographer. There is a sense of simply walking through a town and seeing what you happen to see – without the

It's back! With the goal of bringing a little cheer to patients in the hospital during the holiday season, the deviantART Holiday Card Project connects deviants from around the world and applies their tremendous artistic abilities in designing and creating uplifting holiday cards.
In past years, the Project has received more than 5,000 cards sent in by more than 1,000 deviants from 50 different countries/political regions. Cards were then divvied up and distributed in-person by deviantART members to local Los Angeles hospitals, with additional cards given to various hospitals in the U.S. and abroad for hospital staff members to hand out to patients.
The idea behind the Holiday Card Project is simple: do something nice for others. However, if you're looking for even more incentive, every deviant who submits a card will be given a free one-month Premium Membership to deviantA
