Flexible, realistic scales for dollsI've run into a design dilemma. I am trying to find a solution to scales on a posable doll.Flexible, realistic scales for dolls6 months ago in Personal More Like This
this was the original concept sketch. In the end, I decided to change the facial structure, but plan on keeping the body fairly similar.
Here's what Epsilon looks like now. I want to carry the scale design over into the belly scales, and possibly a few accents. The issue is how to go about doing such. We've had a few ideas rolled around, and have only ruled out methods. Seeing as this doll will be around 3 and 1/2 feet long, cost is a concern.
~ Scales need to be flexible, so to avoid interfering overly much with the movement of the doll.
~ Scales need to be 3-D, able to take texture and customized details, and in the end apply a sealant to achieve a scaley, shiny look.
~ Scales need to be able to be sewn onto the fur fabric
~ Scales need to be custom done in varying sizes, and quite a few of them. castings won't work here.

I felt the instruction was beneficial in learning how to colour in a different style as well as general concepts about colouring I can apply to my own style to improve upon it. I really enjoyed the lesson and Jade/MzzAzn is very nice and easy to talk to!

Comment(s) on lesson/How you felt about it:
MzzAzn first off is a great artist and colorist and has many styles of coloring she has taught herself to do. I chose cell-shading as my lesson topic seeing as that's what I am more interested in learning. I started out with a flat colored picture an
[CRAFTS CONTEST] Valentine's Day (EXTENDED!)FancyCrafts' Valentine's Day contest![CRAFTS CONTEST] Valentine's Day (EXTENDED!)2 months ago in Personal More Like This
CONTEST EXTENDED: Why, you ask? Well, it is for those who are a tad late and those who don't want to upload their work online before giving it to their sweethearts. A lot of entries are made as gifts for people, so naturally, many people want to keep them as secret. Therefore, go celebrate first, and then wrap this up! You get another week, so the contest's new deadline is February 21st.
Hey everyone! Finally time for a new contest! And knowing the date, the theme wasn't hard to pick or guess. We'll just be simple and mainstream and do a Valentine's Day theme! After all, the date is almost here, only three weeks away. So it's a win-win situation - you can be making things for your sweethearts (or to sell to others who don't have your wicked skills. money is great!) AND you can be entering the contest! Interested? Don't discredit yourself!I've been seeing more and more people writing journals about how dA is stressing them out and they need to take a break or they aren't feeling good about their work. I know some of this can come from popularity and style drama but I just want to say a few things about fundamentally feeling insecure about your work.Don't discredit yourself!9 months ago in Personal More Like This
I have those bad days too; heck more than just as day it can go on for weeks, and I think most of that depressed unhappy feeling surrounding my art comes from comparing myself to others. I watch those around me progress at very fast speeds and here I sit plodding along trying to improve in small areas. I just want to tell you that that is okay! Everyone progresses at a different pace. And don't let anyone, including yourself tell you that your art isn't worthy of being displayed here.
Everyone starts out somewhere, some have more talent than others, but those awesome artists we see look up to and admire are the ones that stuck with it and never gave up! They kept at it, prac

An Aereoscopic Adventure! An Aereoscopic Adventure!9 months ago in Art Features More Like This
i have always been a huge fan of art books. in fact i would say that 99 percent of my bookshelves are filled with art books ranging from animation to fashion design and everything visual in between. it was partly why i am so excited to have produced my own book, Walking Your Octopus. one of my goals with this project was to create an art book that was also an art object and this vision guided every aspect of the book's production. as we all know ebooks are becoming more and more popular and i struggled with how my book which was a celebration of all things analog might fit into the digital space. fortunately my very creative friend eric, had the solution...Aereoscope.

dA's New Mention System and NotificationCheck out the announcement about the new mention system dA has implemented:dA's New Mention System and Notification5 months ago in Personal More Like This
If it works the way it should, simply mentioning my account with a :dev: or :icon: tag in your description, or including the thumb of the stock image you used should notify me of the use of the stock. Assuming it all works properly, you can consider this type of notification sufficient for the requirement in my license agreement to show me your work. For more help with linking things on dA, please see: :faq81:
If you mention me or thumbnail the stock in the artist comments, you do not have to send me an additional message to tell me about the stock use. Doing so will result in redundant messages and make it more difficult for me to sort through and keep up. ^__^ However, if you choose to not link to me in the artist comments, please be sure you are sending me a message to show me the work.
Hopefully this system works well and this will make it easier for me to find art using the sto
ARTIST'S BLOCK - HOW TO BEAT ITHow do you deal with "Artist's Block?"ARTIST'S BLOCK - HOW TO BEAT IT8 months ago in Personal More Like This
I don't care who you are, or how well you draw, one of these days, the Art Block Fairy is going to pay you a little visit. When that day comes, ideas will be scarcer than possums driving pickup trucks. Despite the randomness of that metaphor, how you handle artist's block will decide when you'll get those creative juices flowing again. Some of you will decide to pause and have a snack. I can tell you from experience that this doesn't do much to kick-start the imagination. When that doesn't work, there's always the option of getting a second snack. But eventually, you'll get too frustrated and too full to keep doing that. There's got to be another solution. So you decide to follow the prevailing wisdom, which is to go for a walk to refresh yourself, in the hopes that inspiration might return. The walk is pleasant, but almost mythical in its fecklessness. If walks worked, the beach would be teaming with cartoonists and write
Tips on How To Get CommissionsWhen offering commissions, it can be very hard to get yourself noticed, what with the hundreds of thousands of other artists out there. People gripe about how pageviews aren’t important, but they are a helpful tool for you to see what kind of traffic flow you’re attracting. The more views you get, the more of a chance there is that one of those viewers is interested in commissioning you.Tips on How To Get Commissions2 years ago in Personal More Like This
Gigonomics is a term I heard about a few months ago at an FLBA conference. After Googling it, many people seem to be using it in a slightly different way, but I was particularly intrigued by the way it was used by the keynote speaker, who was also a comedian. I can’t remember his name, but I probably will after I post this…
Basically he said that he takes any gig he can get, because you never know who could be in the audience. That was how he was asked to come to our conference. I realized that this can apply here on DeviantArt as well.
The way to get yourself noticed is to

Polymer Clay Secrets Revealed! This article is part of projecteducate's second Community Week, please don't forget to check the rest of the articles and the contest happening this week! If you have any questions about polymer clay or this article please don't hesitate to ask.Polymer Clay Secrets Revealed!2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
From time to time polymer clay neophytes ask me what tips I can give them to help them improve their craft. In my previous article I already wrote about what kind of clays, tools and techniques can be used, but materials can only take you so far. Although they are helpful, I've seen people creating masterpieces with nothing but homemade clay and practically no tools. After all, clay, tools and resources don't create a masterpiece, you do.
I realized eventually that there's three invaluable and essential things you'll need if you want to succeed as a polymer clay artist. In fact, I think they're needed for all forms of a

Do's and Dont's of Digital PaintingDo's and Don'ts of Digital PaintingDo's and Dont's of Digital Painting8 months ago in Art Features More Like This
The possibilities of digital painting and digital art in general are almost infinite. There is basically nothing you cannot do as long as you just know how to approach it. Yet an abundance of programs and tools has both advantages and disadvantages. Knowing what to favour and what to avoid can be both a huge time saver and help you sidestep frustration.
What we will focus on in this article are some basic tools and techniques of digital painting; we'll try to root out pitfalls and see how to avoid them. Mind that all of the points mentioned below aren't rules carved in stone; there are always cases where breaking the rules can be much more fruitful for a certain effect than following them too strictly. With time and practice you will gain good judgment over when to follow the guidelines and when to leave them aside.
Note: Names of certain tools might vary depending on t
