Flexible, realistic scales for dollsI've run into a design dilemma. I am trying to find a solution to scales on a posable doll.Flexible, realistic scales for dolls1 year ago in Personal More Like This
this was the original concept sketch. In the end, I decided to change the facial structure, but plan on keeping the body fairly similar.
Here's what Epsilon looks like now. I want to carry the scale design over into the belly scales, and possibly a few accents. The issue is how to go about doing such. We've had a few ideas rolled around, and have only ruled out methods. Seeing as this doll will be around 3 and 1/2 feet long, cost is a concern.
~ Scales need to be flexible, so to avoid interfering overly much with the movement of the doll.
~ Scales need to be 3-D, able to take texture and customized details, and in the end apply a sealant to achieve a scaley, shiny look.
~ Scales need to be able to be sewn onto the fur fabric
~ Scales need to be custom done in varying sizes, and quite a few of them. castings won't work here.
Has anyone done somethin

I've met Dave many times and he is always looking to help younger artists in need of a kick start! His current projects are detailed in this journal http://techgnotic.deviantart.com/journal/Dave-Elliott-An-Authentic-Citizen-384734344 along with lots of great advice on how to get into the publishing industry. His two anthologies and how to participate in his project is also linked in there.

Don't discredit yourself!I've been seeing more and more people writing journals about how dA is stressing them out and they need to take a break or they aren't feeling good about their work. I know some of this can come from popularity and style drama but I just want to say a few things about fundamentally feeling insecure about your work.Don't discredit yourself!2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I have those bad days too; heck more than just as day it can go on for weeks, and I think most of that depressed unhappy feeling surrounding my art comes from comparing myself to others. I watch those around me progress at very fast speeds and here I sit plodding along trying to improve in small areas. I just want to tell you that that is okay! Everyone progresses at a different pace. And don't let anyone, including yourself tell you that your art isn't worthy of being displayed here.
Everyone starts out somewhere, some have more talent than others, but those awesome artists we see look up to and admire are the ones that stuck with it and never gave up! They kept at it, prac

Polymer Clay Secrets Revealed! This article is part of projecteducate's second Community Week, please don't forget to check the rest of the articles and the contest happening this week! If you have any questions about polymer clay or this article please don't hesitate to ask.Polymer Clay Secrets Revealed!3 years ago in Art Features More Like This
From time to time polymer clay neophytes ask me what tips I can give them to help them improve their craft. In my previous article I already wrote about what kind of clays, tools and techniques can be used, but materials can only take you so far. Although they are helpful, I've seen people creating masterpieces with nothing but homemade clay and practically no tools. After all, clay, tools and resources don't create a masterpiece, you do.
I realized eventually that there's three invaluable and essential things you'll need if you want to succeed as a polymer clay artist. In fact, I think they're needed for all forms of a

If you are considering going into the industry....If you are an artist or want to be one, especially if you want to get into the VFX industry, you should watch this:If you are considering going into the industry....1 year ago in Personal More Like This
It touches on a few things I feel are important to understand as an artist and even as consumers of art:
1.) Art is not an exact science. It can be difficult to put a price tag on it, let alone the often very complicated processes of making it.
2.) Computers are tools that facilitate our work but they DO NOT do the work for us.
3.) Don't get into this industry for the money. If you go into this line of work, you do it because you love it. If someone happens to get lucky or has a really great idea and he/she hits it big, GREAT! Good for him/her. But don't go in expecting that to happen to you. Chances are it won't. If you are lucky, you will find a nice middleclass job you can support yourself and your family on for a while...... until....
4.) Unfortunately, a lot of employers see artists as disposable. When they no longer need you, they will kick you to the curb an
Do's and Dont's of Digital PaintingDo's and Don'ts of Digital PaintingDo's and Dont's of Digital Painting2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
The possibilities of digital painting and digital art in general are almost infinite. There is basically nothing you cannot do as long as you just know how to approach it. Yet an abundance of programs and tools has both advantages and disadvantages. Knowing what to favour and what to avoid can be both a huge time saver and help you sidestep frustration.
What we will focus on in this article are some basic tools and techniques of digital painting; we'll try to root out pitfalls and see how to avoid them. Mind that all of the points mentioned below aren't rules carved in stone; there are always cases where breaking the rules can be much more fruitful for a certain effect than following them too strictly. With time and practice you will gain good judgment over when to follow the guidelines and when to leave them aside.
Note: Names of certain tools might vary depending on t

Become a better artistTo improve and become really good at art. Isn't that what all of us, artists, secretly wish for? That we, one day, become as good as the idols we've looked up to.Become a better artist2 years ago in Art Features More Like This
Well, we can't be all born with mad talent. But there are certainly ways to speed up the process for you! In the journal here, I listed some tips and tricks that helped me getting to the point where I am now. I thought I'd share them with you. And maybe you can add to the list. I'm always willing to learn.
Give up on being a mangaka -- or hold more realistic expectations
Admit it. Most of us here started drawing manga because we liked the style at a certain point. How awesome would it be to one day become a pro in that field. A real manga artist (or mangaka, like they say in Japan)! The truth is... becoming a mangaka isn't that easy. It it were, many more people would be one. First of all, mangaka's live in Japan. That's the only country with a manga industry big enough to actually ha

okay, so after a swarm of questions many of which left me with my jaw on the floor... i realized something...
people are afraid of pushing a button to see what it does
okay, to backtrack first. i am self taught in photoshop, had no books had no tutorials, had a borrowed i think 7... dunno which was before cs2 when i started, i learned it by ....pressing a button and seeing what it does
i explored, i tried stuff out.
i had no teachers no schools no education on this stuff
i saw a button i pressed it.
that is how about 9 years ago when i first decided to try and apply digital coloring to early pages of ravine, i was dabbing paint on a page. i came to the point where i had to paint a waterfall. so , just for fun i tried putting scattering on the foam brush i made, a simple thing. and i was gonna see if smudge could be scattered. it had a weird side effect.

The REAL Difference between Anthro and FurryA common topic among the anthro community (and heck, DeviantArt at large) is the classification of what is anthro, what is furry, and what isn't. Heck, even well-established artists have a hard time explaining it, and to quote Scott Kurtz of PvP: "Cartoon animals don't have boobs!"The REAL Difference between Anthro and Furry8 years ago in Art Features More Like This
An often-offered definition of the difference between Anthro and Furry is that Furry is a sexualized form of Anthro, whereas Anthro is simply drawing animals acting like humans and sipping tea; ergo, Anthro is the 'true' art and standard of civilization, while Furry is its mentally retarded drooly cousin, mostly consisting of cub porn and recolored Sonic OC's.
This is the most widely accepted definition between Furry and Anthro. It's also dead wrong.
To help demonstrate this, I've made up a simple graph to make it clear what 'Anthro' is and what Furry isn't:
A brief explanation of the relevant bits so I'm not just repeating what's already written on the chart's deviation page:
