And my parents don't know I'm an artist. It's gonna be a little weird.
They usually don't pay attention to what I do because they think I'm playing games. Ever since I made that April Fools journal entry about be no longer being a hobbyist (which was mostly a half-truth), somehow they heard that I apparently got some job. They have no idea what sort of job I'm doing though, but they don't ask much and they probably assume I got some IT job.
Recently my mom asked me to help out at a yard sale this family seems to run every weekend but since my brother and sister are starting to get out more, we've been less able to hold them. Today, I was the only one besides her who's available to help out, but I had to talk her out of it because "I have a two-thousand dollar project to finish by early September".
My mother is starting to distrust me though, and she wanted to check over to see if I am being truthful. She just recently she looked over at my monitor to see a recent icon commission opened up on graphicsgale. I cannot truthfully

I am really sorry to have had any part in yet another steaming bag of fan drama being dumped on our collective Canterlot doorstep.
Thanks everyone for being so kind and supportive and for tolerating my ridiculously long post. I'm in awe, actual, slack-jawed, glazed expression awe over the outpouring of support and good mojo from folks.
I shouldn't need to say this, but please DO NOT resort to death threats or ANY kind of harm directed at the MLPArtConfessions blog. As sentient adult human creatures we are more than capable of disagreeing with words that don't invoke violence. Seriously, don't. DO NOT. DONUT. We are better than this. I don't care if it is "just the internet" everyone needs to get over the knee-jerk reaction to start slinging threats and violence around as if it means nothing. My friends are not sadists or bullies.
For the past two days I've been weeding death, rape and all sorts of violent imagery out of my
Devious Journal EntryJust trying out inking lineart on a proto page, might be a bit messier than usualDevious Journal Entry7 months ago in Personal More Like This
I normally use pen paths to ink but I think its too time consuming to do comic pages that way
Devious Journal EntryToday is Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead in English. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died And I thought I'd share this short animation video that I found, which I think is a great example of what this holiday is about.Devious Journal Entry4 months ago in Personal More Like This
On The Giving of ThanksThanksgiving is my favorite holiday. To our modern understanding and sensibilities it can be hard to reconcile the historical record with what the day is supposed to represent. When I was growing up, making hand-shaped turkeys in school, it was easy to buy into the feel-good story of European settlers and native people sitting down together for a communal feast. Maybe it happened, it probably didn't, but what came later- disease, one-sided war, cruelty and inhumanity- of that we have no illusions. Not anymore. On The Giving of Thanks3 months ago in Personal More Like This
But as our understanding and acceptance of the historical context has changed, the holiday itself has taken on its own meaning, tradition, and sensibilities. Truthfully, we don't need pilgrims and falsehoods in order to have Thanksgiving. Family, fidelity, togetherness and-yes- even thankfulness are reason enough.
My mother passed away nearly five years ago. Losing her was one of the most painful experiences of my life. It was to h
Season 4! So Wow! Much Animation! Wow!Season 4! So Wow! Much Animation! Wow!3 months ago in Personal More Like This
The Season 4 premier has arrived and the great gulf of pony-less misery is now behind us!
I loved the opening two-parter! It feels good to see Twilight as adorkable as always and humble about her status as Princess Pretty Pony. The characters were all spot on, there were fan-favorites all around, and the resolution set up a season-long arc. And most of all, it was FUN. It was fun to watch, to talk about, and most of all it had a pimp cane shaped like Twilight's head. How can you go wrong?
I'm curious how everyone else felt about the new episode! Let me know in the comments!
I used to wonder what phallocentrism could beMy mother is a self-described "70s feminist." When I was growing up, she kind of discouraged me and my siblings from being into stuff like My Little Pony because she felt it reinforced limiting gender stereotypes. Which, this having been the 1980s, was probably true.I used to wonder what phallocentrism could be5 months ago in Personal More Like This
So the conversation in which I told her I was now, in my 30s, a huge My Little Pony fan was odd.
We were having coffee, and I said "you'll never guess what I'm into now."
"My Little Pony."
"Oh. (pause) So you're reliving your lost girlhood?"
"Yes, but there's more."
The fact is, I think MLP in its current incarnation is, for the most part, an unexpectedly enlightened voice for feminism in children's entertainment. Female, not male, is the cultural default gender in Equestria, and femininity is allowed to encompass the full range of individual personalities, and the message that anyone really can be anything she feels inside is...a big part of why I'm such a fan and why I find the show inspiring. I hope lots of kids
Animondays - AmethystThis time I found a video that contains all seven parts of the DC nation shorts called Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld. These were to me my absolute favorite shorts, because it reminds so much of the classic animated shows that I used to watch when I was a kid back in the early 90s.Animondays - Amethyst2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Animondays - The Flight. Here's a wonderful short student film that I just found out. It kinda reminds me of something out of Studio Ghibli with the floating city and ruins, with a touch of Moebius. And the backgrounds are stunning to look at.Animondays - The Flight.2 months ago in Personal More Like This
Animated Monday - Super MetroidEvery monday of every week I'll be sharing videos of animated shorts that I find interesting. Here's this one that's from one of my fave artists, :icondavidrapozaart:. And what I love about this short, besides its visuals, is that the artist only used Photoshop for all the animation work, with an editor program to put it togetherAnimated Monday - Super Metroid3 months ago in Personal More Like This
Advice on becoming a better artistI get asked by a lot of younger artists (and moms and grandmothers) for advice on getting better and becoming a professional comic artist. Hopefully this will help. Ask me more questions if I'm not clear enough and I'll try to post more about what I think makes a good artist and how to become a professional in the comic industry.Advice on becoming a better artist6 months ago in Personal More Like This
If you're not already aware, I'm a self-taught artist with little to no schooling on the subject. I thought I knew how to draw when I was a kid and I thought that drawing from shapes and building your characters out of forms was stupid. I don't know what the proper term for this is so I'm going to refer to it as construction drawing or under drawing throughout this post. My parents had purchased me some how to draw books, I also went to art class, and both of these tried to get me to use construction drawing techniques. Unfortunately I didn't understand the value of it and thus rejected it. I didn't need to build a tiger out of blocks, circles,
