Floored. So I was just going thru a folder on my desktop that contains pretty much every single piece of fan art I've gotten since this whole pony craze began. And I sat back and stopped and realized - holy hell, this is just...amazing. I mean, every time I get something new, I am so flattered at the fact that somebody would want to take their time out to draw something for *me*. It boggles my mind, but I love each and every one of them...regardless of skill level.Floored.1 year ago in Personal More Like This
I just had a moment where I just felt completely moved with happiness at the thoughtfulness and generosity...and I just wanted to say thank you AGAIN to everyone and anyone who has taken time out of their daily lives to be creative and share that with me. It means the world.
Keep it up
5 Year Plan*Because I'll be teaching in about a week at SCAD, I've been thinking a lot about what to tell the students. And I wrote it out so that I could solidify it in my head. This stuff is for younger artists mostly, so feel free to skip.5 Year Plan2 years ago in Personal More Like This
When I spend time with another comic artist, sometimes I'll ask, "What's your 5 year plan?" In other words, what steps is he taking in order to gain control over his career in order to move up the ladder? Usually I don't get much of an answer.
The reason I think many comic artists aren't forward-thinking has to do with the way our industry is set up. Whether by conscious design or through the neglect of its participants, younger freelancers get into a habit of complacency while hoping for a chance to suckle from the teet of a major publisher. Waiting around for a career doesn't promote the idea of freelancers taking active control of their OWN careers.
If I had to sum up the 5 Year Plan

Independent comic book creators and artist are finding an wonderful new funding platform for their projects these days. Kickstarter was the first really successful crowd funding platform to go main stream. It's an incredible tool, especially in an industry that looks down on indy creators.
As many of you know, I myself have funded two very successful kickstarter projects. I am in the process of funding a third, I have already hit the goal. Hit the link if you want to join in http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/488571414/the-bean-vol-3-broken-souls?ref=card
I hope that I can pass on some advice to help other creators, find success in their projects as well. I'll be honest it is a great funding tool for art projects, yet it can also be quite stressful and frustrating. Especially if you miss your goal. Also like everything take this with a grain of salt.
The key element about kickstarter is really based on trust. Trust that the c

1. They don't have flaws. Flaws are the first thing that should be explored in character, at least after the first flashes of inspiration have passed and you start moving into more concrete turf. People say Mary Sues are defined by lack of flaws; the flip side insists that giving your character "issues" won't make a character any less of a Mary Sue. Now, my definition of a Mary Sue doesn't involve flaws or the lack thereof; a Mary Sue, to me, is defined by the disproportionate amount of attention given to a Sue by the plot and the priorities of other characters. So, yes, it possible for a Mary Sue to have legit flaws and still be a Mary Sue. However, the difference between "issues" and a character flaw is what role they play in the character's deve

How To Give Better Comments
During our visit here at deviantART, upon submitting our deviations, what is expected next? Comments! However, here's a little fun past-time activity: take all the excellent, if not better, deviations comments in your gallery. Now take a look at all the deviation comments you've ever received. You will notice that good comments don't happen as often as they should. Although we all want good comments and to be better commenters ourselves, we have to act upon it instead of just sitting around and hoping to receiving nice comments after submitting something. Give, to receive.
Here I show you the basic concept of commenting, to make yourself a better commenter; and I don't mean being a 'good' commenter since everyone comments in his or her own way. That i

How to put this in words?
I met with Richard today and it was no less than a dream. If I could use a list of words to describe him, they would be: Kind, inspirational, very humble and incredibly strong.
It took me a good 3 hours to try and best think up of the words to make this post. Still, I'm a little shaken and emotional about the whole event.
We spoke about a great manner of many things, and I had to ask him a few questions about his techniques, as well as more deeply rooted cultural issues like the Appropriation and the Permission methods. He spoke with the utmost humility and humor- the humor was something we both shared! I even told him about my work within the communities and the 2 books that have just come out with my work. As we spoke, there were a great deal of compliments shared- and he even noticed the ring I was wearing; it was one of his pieces! He laughed... he couldn't believe that I was wearing it!
Amongst other things he notes that I "spoke like a
My Progression as an Animator at DisneyA friend of mine is writing a book on animation fundamentals and asked me for a "paragraph or two" (which I can't do) on the subject of timing. I considered it and ended up writing about my progression of learning while a Disney animator in the traditional animation days. It was good therapy for me to really think this through and consider the order of things. I hope you enjoy it. "Like" or "fav" this so others will see it too. My Progression As A Disney Animator
by Tom Bancroft
Walt Disney is quoted as saying that it takes 10 years to make a great animator.
When I was first coming out of California Institute of the Arts and joining a Disney internship in 1988, hearing that quote was devastating. 10 years? That's FOREVER! I wanted to be a full-fledged Disney animator in TWO years! I rationalized that that was a way of thinking from the 40s and today, we move at a quicker pace, so-

"Scars can come in handy. I have one myself above my left knee that is a perfect map of the London Underground."—Prof. Albus Dumbledore
Early life becomes an exploration of invisible parameters, circles beyond circles, as one pushes out to test the boundaries of safety. There is one’s bedroom, one’s home, neighborhood, school and town, state and nation. Early on, maps become important documents – declarations of being and rights and privileges. In the art world, throughout history, maps have been a constant measure of human progress, from the Phoenecians recording their trade routes over 2000 years ago, or pre-Columbian t

This past season had been a very busy and stressful on for myself [and my family] and thank whatever powers that be, we had pulled through and now are making our little transitions to the New Year.
This upcoming year is going to prove busy as always, both on the business fronts and the personal ones.
On the business front, I'd like to take this time to thank all my patrons and supporters of my work.
Sadly, due to the recent circumstances beyond my control [in regards to the lateness of the pendants and ornaments], I was left under-budget a near $300 for the season. This doesn't damper me however, because of the great support I had from my clients, and the ever patience that I can attribute to them all. A heartfelt Thank You to any and all my watchers, viewers, commenters, clients and patrons who support the kinds of work I do; from the Cultural Conservational, to the Environmental Conservational, to the a

What does 'Character Design' mean?
The character design is the process which comes after the characterisation and consists in defining the character through his/her physical appearance.
We need to consider a character as a little fictional creature, human or not, that aims to please its creator and the public as well.
While the basic characterization of this fictional creature (his tastes, his fears, his behaviors) may take a little mental effort, as it is a sort of list of emotions, facts and feelings that come and go in the life of a character, the process of visual realization of this creature may not be as simple. That's why many writers and characters creators prefer to rely on experienced hands.
Also many of the mental aspects of the character are not possible to gain by using 'static' visual medium. For 'static' I mean all the illustrations and drawings unable to tell a

The Pearl Necklace
The cheerful girl with bouncy golden curls was almost five. Waiting with her mother at the checkout stand, she saw them: a circle of glistening white pearls in a pink foil box.
"Oh please, Mommy. Can I have them? Please, Mommy, please!"
Quickly the mother checked the back of the little foil box and then looked back into the pleading blue eyes of her little girl's upturned face.
"A dollar ninety-five. That's almost $2.00. If you really want them, I'll think of some extra chores for you and in no time you can save enough money to buy them for yourself. Your birthday's only a week away and you might get another crisp dollar bill from Grandma."
As soon as Jenny got home, she emptie
RIP Joe SimonI am so very saddened today to hear of the death of Joe Simon, one of the two creators of Captain America and Bucky. The other being the late Jack 'The King' Kirby'. I could go on and on about how Cap and Buck are two of my favorites and talk about how I love the Golden Age of comics for all the good and the bad.RIP Joe Simon2 years ago in Personal More Like This
I don't honestly have the strength to go into it right now. Perhaps later. My dream was to meet Joe dressed as Bucky Barnes and maybe even get a WWII Cap issue and have him sign it. I would have gotten a picture to commemorate such an occasion. Sadly I'll never get to meet him and tell him how much of an impact his characters have had on my life.
What really makes me sad is I'm fairly certain he lived in Upstate NY and he had done some local cons and I missed him every time. I have to make my Bucky costume even better now as a tribute to him.
RIP Joe, you will be missed.
