EDIT: I wanted to say a little more about what this image could be. We all see this as a horrifying image but as noted by one great DA member I have drawn the spirit about the same size as the girl so could also be a child. This could be a mother holding an image she has looked at many a time as the wear shows, maybe to remember a lost child that could just still be trying to play hide and seek. That is what is so great about art we can each add our own narrative.
To all of you who enjoy my work I am re-entering my artworks into the competition and would be greatly appreciative to all of you to look at my work again as all of your favourites and comments have been deleted when my work was removed. I like to get back to each and every one of you who honour me for taking the time to favourite and comment on my work and look through your galleries to reply in kind, thank you. To those who are interested I wanted to experiment with this competition by taking a base photograph and drawing directly over the top, adding the lighting the phantom and the smoke as well as to heavily edit the base photo. I have edited all photos to make the subject unrecognisable. All of the references used as a base belong to me and were taken for this contest.
EDIT: The response to this has been amazing and I am truly thankful to all of you. I will be slowing working through my messages to say thank you to so many of you.

I had another idea for this contest and again wanted to find something very ordinary. The thought of being absorbed into a book just felt haunting. Please let me know your thoughts.
Based on one photograph taken by me for this contest, edited and drawn over in photoshop. The book is an 1864 publication of Ingoldsby's Legends which is in the public domain and has no copyright. This book is a collection of myths and ghost stories so I felt was quite fitting.

Another boogeyman, inspired by another everyday primal fear. In addition to the fear of dark basements, I also hated the feeling one gets when you mis-judge how many steps there are, and nearly fall. The dark places under basement or attic stairs always seemed like the most dangerous places in the house. Funny how a little shadowy space in a house can be so scary to a kid. Seems silly now, but back then the danger was real.

It was always there in the shadows
Watching while she worked
Waiting

Very fun, and very creepy to work on. C: Always learning and crafting; the download is rather huge.... since the canvas is a little under 20x12 inches... >< (Originally I was working on a 50x30 canvas)

Also, When I upload things to DA the files seem to darken substantially...and I lose some of the detailing in the dark areas, is anyone else having this Issue?

There's a better show going on behind her. Or beneath

This is my entry for the Mama Scared Stiff Contest.

Lil bit about the piece: I had plenty of nightmares as a child, but there was always a common factor with most of them; ragged, scratchy, heavy breathing. Didn't matter if I was swimming in the dream, being chased, what have you, there was always a demon/creature that would come up close behind or near me and all I would hear is the the breathing. I'd turn around real slowly, the tension and fear building in the dream, and these black, soulless eyes would be right up close to my face. Then it would lunge at me, it's teeth and black mouth swallowing my vision. Naturally, I would wake up gasping, panting, in a cold sweat, and yes, sometimes crying.

That being said, the scariest times for me as a child were when I would have these dreams and the next week before I went to sleep each night the dream was all I would think about. I have a very strong imagination, hard to control sometimes, and I could swear as I was trying to sleep i would hear a creek in the floor boards or hear a rustle in the corner. I would sleep facing the wall, trying to shut it all out, but sure enough i would hear something, even the breathing, and I would turn around, almost positive I would see this guy or something like it, right at the edge of the bed. Never saw anything though, to the benefit of my sanity.

Thank you for viewing!

This piece was all Graphite and pen, with small digital adjustments to brightness and contrast. I used photos of my room as reference.

With a Baroque style lighting and color scheme, I wanted to achieve the horrible feeling of the viewer seeing what the subject cannot. I for one, was always unsettled when either reading with a flashlight, or on my computer in the dark, and looking away only to see complete darkness until my eyes could adjust. Unbeknownst to her, there is something lurking right beside her.

And another entry, you can click the links below to see my other pieces for the Ugly Truth competition. All references used are my own and produced in Photoshop on a Wacom as usual.
EDIT: I decided to work on the smoke a little more and to have it passing into the undead as I felt this portrayed the concept a little better.

These are links to my other entries if you are interested.
