(I'm sorry it turned out a little lossy, but background photos in stamps tend to do that because of all the colors).
This stamp commemorates a technological undertaking that is just over 30 years old. The Space Transportation System (STS), better known to the general public as the Space Shuttle Program, began its first mission on April 12, 1981, when the shuttle Columbia
was launched. Since then, the program has overseen 134 shuttle flights.
Most people are familiar with the most notable disasters of the program, such as the destruction of the Columbia
in 2003, and the infamous Challenger
explosion in 1986 (pictured).
The STS Program has had many successes, too - the most notable of these is the program's continued contributions to the International Space Station.
On July 8, 2011, the Space Shuttle Atlantis
flew the program's final mission.Photos courtesy of Reuters. Facts courtesy of Wikipedia.
