My Journey to FaithMy own journey to faith has been a long complex one.My Journey to Faith5 years ago in Profiles More Like This
Like most African Americans of the 30's, my parents were raised in the church, but neither
of them were really Christians. Furthermore my dad had a bitter experience in church when he
was young that forever soured him to religion and he had absolutely no interest in it.
Mom believed in God and enjoyed watching Robert Schuller's on TV, but her belief in God was mixed
with a hodgepodge of other things, including reincarnation. She was also a firm believer in 'to each his own.'
She thought that all paths led to God and that as long as one led a good life that was enough.
Despite this, God had His hand on me, because from the time I was little I instinctively sought Him.
Very early on I had a deep curiosity and hunger for spiritual things. I loved Bible stories and was
very curious about God. On the few occasions my mom or some other relative took me to visit a church
or Sunday school, I always felt a strange yearning. I wanted something

*Vellez asks "What is your creative process? Do you just research and then begin drawing when you get an assignment, or do you mull it over a bit?"
Hmm it usually starts with me getting the assignment since I spend my freetime drawing other things mostly (these days at least). As soon as I know what the client wants, I leave it alone for a couple of days and wait for ideas to sprout in my head. The rest is just craftsmanship, you know, drawing the stuff and everything. The real work is done as soon as I put down the thumbnail sketch.

Putting Up my WallsPutting Up My WallsPutting Up my Walls3 years ago in Free Verse More Like This
I used to have my walls down for everyone to come in
Anyone who seemed to care, anyone who "loved" me
But then I was used, thrown on the ground and stepped on
Till I was bruised, bleeding, weak and completely paralyzed
And from that day forward, I began to build up very tall walls
around my scarred up heart filled with shards of broken glass
So tall that if anyone were to even attempt and climb over them
That they'd become tired, and their hands full of oozing blisters.
No, I never had the desire to let one person in again to abuse me
The walls that have stood for years have caused my heart to chill
Because I didn't want to allow any ray of sunshine to come upon it
In fear that it would eventually become a horrible haunting darkness
That would cause me to recoil further into deep depressing despair
I'd rather be alone within these tall walls, then to be hurt again
For I believe even if I do find that one who manages to climb over
There will still be

Honor Your FallenOne for the man who answered the call.Honor Your Fallen3 years ago in Traditional Fixed Forms More Like This
One for the brother taken too soon.
One for the man who gave his all.
One for hearts made heavy and sad.
One for families torn apart;
One for a boy now without his dad.
One for the onslaught of tears,
One for the new struggles.
One for so many lost years.
One for the mother's only son,
One for the memories;
One more, one more until this war is won.
One for the brother coming home under his Nation's flag,
One for the ultimate sacrifice,
One for the man in the body bag.
One for the love of the fight,
One for family born not of blood.
One for that final flight.
One for the free.
One for you
Until it's just me.
A final salute for those who no longer hurt,
For the boys who paid the ultimate price;
Twenty one guns for my family in the dirt.
Notes on Avoidant Personality DisorderGreen pine trees, cranes and turtles…Notes on Avoidant Personality Disorder1 week ago in Stories & Vignettes More Like This
You must tell a story of your hard times,
And laugh twice.
— From Oiwai-Ondo
On 30 June, 2015, I was diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder:
Individuals with Avoidant Personality Disorder grow up with excessive social anxiety and withdrawal. They have a longstanding pattern of shyness, feelings of inferiority, and hypersensitivity to rejection/embarrassment. The core features of this disorder are: (1) negative emotion (anxiousness (fear of rejection/embarrassment)), and (2) detachment (withdrawal, intimacy avoidance, and anhedonia [decreased ability to feel pleasure]). This disorder is only diagnosed if: (1) it begins no later than early adulthood, (2) these behaviors occur at home, work, and in the community, and (3) these behaviors lead to clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

I have succumbed to sadness
For much too long been blinded
By hopes of the divine.
And on this cruel morning
I see, despite your kindness,
That I was always yours,
but you were never mine.
NotJihad...I did not begin this for glory. I did not come to kill in the name of Allah. This is not jihad.NotJihad...5 years ago in Flash Fiction & Vignettes More Like This
I came to fight invaders. To defend my country.
Today I killed a young man; an American. I shot him in the neck from three hundred meters. I did not see him fall, but I knew I had killed him. I saw his motionless body, a deeper shadow in the shadows of the tombs. This is a place of death. Still it did not seem right.
His fellows came forward. I moved to another position, and watched them carefully. I expected them to fire on me, or my companions. But they did not. I realized they had come to recover the body of the man I killed.
For respect, I held my fire.
They carried their dead friend away toward the street where I knew their vehicles were waiting. I was sorry for myself that I had killed him. I was sorry for the others, for losing their

Darling, you stirred your voice into the coffeehouse scents;
It carried notes of inspiration and the flavor of your soul.
Your words trickled down my throat, and I savored their warmth.
There was no bitterness, no dregs- just your heart poured out.
I abandoned my cup to follow, “hello” scalding my tongue.
How to be an evil overlordBeing an Evil Overlord seems to be a good career choice. It pays well,How to be an evil overlord10 years ago in General Fiction More Like This
there are all sorts of perks and you can set your own hours. However every Evil Overlord I've read about in books or seen in movies invariably gets overthrown and destroyed in the end. I've noticed that no matter whether they are barbarian lords, deranged wizards, mad scientists or alien invaders, they always seem to make the same basic mistakes every single time. Therefore, if I ever happen to become an Evil Overlord:
1. My Legions of Terror will have helmets with clear plexiglass visors, not face-concealing ones.
2. My ventilation ducts will be too small to crawl through.
3. My noble half-brother whose throne I usurped will be killed, not kept anonymously imprisoned in a forgotten cell of my dungeon.
4. Shooting is not too good for my enemies.
5. The artifact which is the source of my power will not be kept on the Mountain of Despair beyond the River of Fire guarded by the Dragons of Eternity. It will be in my saf

"You people are close-minded hypocrites. So, yes."
"How am I a close-minded hypocrite?"

"When have I ever bashed gay people? Or anyone who has a different belief than me?"

the lonely broken heart

Will I love before I die
or will I die alone?
Will someone love this flesh and blood

Is what's on the outside
more important than what's in?
Is wanting to be wanted
such a mortal sin?
To Grieve with No TearsWhen I was a little girl, my teacher told me not to cry.To Grieve with No Tears1 year ago in Free Verse More Like This
She told me I would run out of tears
and wouldn't have them when I really needed them.
It took years,
but I finally stopped crying,
and grew out of childish things.
I traded tears for anger
and sorrow for muteness
because it is easier
to hate the world
than mourn it.
And now I sit,
I had not run out of tears.
Reflection Chapter 1Reflection Chapter 14 years ago in Introductions & Chapters More Like This
The night air was cool on this late-winter evening. Though it was only seven p.m. the sun had already set, and a blanket of dark had covered the town of Ponyville.
Derpy hooves hovered unsteadily down the street, both of her wings failing to maintain any practical rhythm with the other. This generally caused her to fly diagonally in either direction; she would often switch the direction at random times without precise control.
The Pegasus could in fact fly quite gracefully. For some reason she felt it necessary to do otherwise.
Woozy bats, she had once reasoned, woozy bats like bulls stubborn. Such was the sort of logic she used to contemplate most things.
In the corner of her vision she noticed movement. She looked in the direction of said movement to find a group of birds. "Ants!" She called at them. "Eggs all scrambled and gravel from sand!"
When the flock hit the center of her vision the flock seemed to dissipate. Every time she ever saw a flock of birds they always looked
