The friends and family of Malcolm Young stand around his grave, united by their silence as they stare at the cold marble in front of them, a myriad of emotions encompassing them all. Three years ago to the day he had died choking on a piece of food. It sounds so ridiculous and undignified. At just twenty eight, Malcolm’s family cannot help but feel as though they have been robbed of a man too young

When your mother is a vampire (and I'm talking Dracula kind of vampire, not a member of the Cullen family) and your father is a straight-up, no-nonsense human being, the effects are... interesting, to say the least. "Hemophagocytic syndrome" is the common name for my condition, but I prefer to call it "Renegade White Blood Cell Syndrome", because then it rolls off the tongue (by comparison).
What was I going to talk about, again? Besides the fact that I'm a vampire (well, half-vampire, but nobody would see the difference if I start sucking your blood), I'm a pretty decent (an exaggeration) runner and total scatterbrain. Half my thoughts are best expressed in parentheses (like this thought) since they tend to be uncontrollably tangential (like right now). Nothing to do with my condition, mind. Chihiro's alarm woke her with a start. She didn't want to wake up, because she was having her favorite dream. The one where she still worked at the bathhouse...
and Haku was there. She could still easily picture his straight black hair and shocking green eyes. Chihiro laid in her bed for a moment, wishing she were still in her dream, and then sat up straight with the realization that it was her sixteenth birthday. She smiled, but it was a sad smile. She sighed, remembering that last year she had hoped Haku would return, only to be disappointed. She could still hear his voice in her head: "We'll be together again one day..."
As she walked to school, alone as usual, since she hadn't made many friends in this town, she wished there was someone she could tell about the spirit world that wouldn't think she was insane. "Maybe this year he'll come. That would be the ultimate birthday gift," she thought. She sighed (as this had become a habit sinc

In a darkened cemetery
I look up at the waning moon
And collapse to my knees
Do you still remember me?
Do you still bear the scars?
Did you ever wonder why
We have chosen different paths?
Once upon a silent nightmare
A long, long time ago
I knew a fallen angel
Pure as the driven snow
Her silvery hair drew me
Across the starry sky
But I was never close enough
To ask her why do angels cry?
You cried your imperfection
Denied your pretty face
They said you were the devil’s child
And called you a disgrace
I was the only person
Who saw what you truly were
I saw your golden halo
And your lips of finest myrrh
Once upon a silent nightmare
A long, long time ago
I knew a fallen angel
Pure as the driven snow
Her silvery hair drew me
Across the starry sky
But I was never close enough
To ask her why do angels cry?
I should have taken my chance
To tell you how I felt
I knew most of the cards in my hand
Except the ones that you had dealt
Yet somehow the words left me

The voice, now mixing with sobs, got louder. Heavy steps could be heard, seemingly nearing the front door of the house. The thuds bounced off the walls just like that voice, though they didn’t seem to carry any more happiness than it. The louder the steps, the more desperate and painful the pleads of the voice that clearly belonged to a woman, got.

A silhouette of a man appeared in the entrance hall, followed by a smaller, more fragile and shaking form of a woman, the owner of the voic
Day of SilenceIn unbiased, unspecific terms, the Day of Silence is an opportunity to maintain a vigil that simultaneously reflects on lives cut tragically short and to serve as a reminder of the end result of hatred, prejudice, and indifference. If you are a progressive proponent, it is a day in honor of and reserved for the suffering of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender communities of America a chance to proclaim a social and political message that the worth of a person is not determined by his or her sexual orientation, and that discrimination on such a merit is no better than racism or sexism. If your views are more orthodox, it is paradoxically an unacceptable acceptance of a deviant lifestyle, the promotion of an agenda that leads to the desecration of traditional family and community values.Day of Silence7 years ago in Editorial More Like This
